The Yang di-Pertuan Agong has consented to appoint former Foreign Ministry secretary-general Shahrul Ikram Yaakob as the country’s new ambassador to the US.

Shahrul (above, right), a career diplomat, was presented his instrument of appointment today.

He replaces Nazri Abdul Aziz, whose contract as ambassador ended in February.

Previously, there was speculation that Investment, Trade, and Industry Minister Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz would get the job as his time in cabinet will end together with his final term as senator in December.

According to Shahrul's biodata on UN's website, he began his term as a diplomat in 1988.

The Pahang native has served in embassies in China and the US, and as the ambassador to Qatar, Slovak Republic and Austria.

His appointment comes at a crucial time in international relations between the globe and the US, with US President Donald Trump keen on flexing the country's economic might to secure what he deems better deals for his country.

  1. How good is this 'career' diplomat after been incubated for so long under a kabel-ed & abangadik environment?
