Kula to sit out DAP polls
The party’s vice-chairman says he wants to make way for younger leaders.
In a statement, the national vice-chairman said he decided to withdraw from the race to make way for younger leaders.
However, he urged members not to forget the sacrifices that some of their leaders had made, which saw them endure arrests, persecution, and intimidation.
He recalled times when some of the party veterans had to spend their own money to attend events and assist in elections.
“These dedicated members are still with us today, and we must continue to honour their contributions. I hope they will not be forgotten,” Kulasegaran, the deputy law and institutional reform minister, said.
It is understood that he is throwing his support behind DAP chairman Lim Guan Eng, who is facing a serious challenge in the elections.
Kulasegaran’s decision to sit out the party polls comes three days after national adviser Tan Kok Wai, national treasurer Fong Kui Lun, and party veteran Phee Boon Poh announced their withdrawal.
They, too, had said that they wanted to make room for a new generation of leaders.
Kulasegaran, who has been with DAP for 30 years, urged the party to continue championing the rights of ordinary, working-class Malaysians and human rights as a whole.
“The party must always remain true to its socialist foundation, fighting for equity, justice, human rights, and good governance,” he said.
