DAP parliamentarian accuses PAS of being an extremist movement
Syerleena Abdul Rashid
KUALA LUMPUR, July 3 , 2023: DAP’s Bukit Bendera member of parliament Syerleena Abdul Rashid has branded PAS as an extremist group for accusing her party of playing up 3R (religion, race and kings) sentiments ahead of the upcoming state elections.
She called on Malaysians to unite against the Islamist party, claiming that it is important to do so in order to protect the country’s diversity and eliminate religious bigotry.
“Extremist movements usually show a tendency to turn their backs on human rights and freedom. By imposing rigid dogma and intolerant beliefs, these movements restrict freedom of speech, religion and conscience,” she said in a statement today.
Syerleena said groups such as PAS undermine the principles of democracy, equality and justice, while fostering an environment of fear and oppression.
“In extreme cases, it can also lead to the breakdown of the social fabric and the emergence of social unrest,” she added.
PAS information chief Khairil Nizam Khirudin was quoted yesterday as saying that DAP should be punished for for playing up the 3R sentiments in its campaign ahead of the state elections.
Syerleena said Khairil’s statement reflects PAS’ disjointed narratives and that he has ran out of ideas as DAP’s struggle clearly supports the system of parliamentary democracy and constitutional monarchy.
