We followed the law in arresting two schoolboys, say police

Hulu Selangor police chief responds to criticism from Lawyers For Liberty, which described the police as being heavy-handed.

The two teenage students who had made criticisms of the SPM history paper later apologised in a separate video.

PETALING JAYA: Hulu Selangor police said that they were merely following the law when they arrested two teenage schoolboys who had criticised the history paper for this year’s Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia examinations.

District police chief Suffian Abdullah, responding to criticism that the police were heavy-handed in their action, said that everyone, including the two youths, are bound by the law.

The criticism were made by the Lawyers For Liberty group whose director Zaid Malek said the two students would have been traumatised by being arrested at home and being subject to drug tests.

Suffian said the police had decided to arrest the students after taking detailed recordings of their statements, conducting fact-checking with relevant parties and on the video clip itself, and obtaining the students’ disciplinary records from their school.

In a widely-shared video, the two students were heard using foul language and mocking questions on Singapore history in the SPM history exam. They later released another video apologising for their actions.

Suffian said after investigations had concluded, the police had granted the two youths an early release on police bail at 11am today, despite having obtained a two-day remand order.

Investigation into the students’ actions is still ongoing, under the Minor Offenses Act and the Communications and Multimedia Act (CMA), he said.

Earlier today, Zaid had demanded that home minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail and communications and digital minister Fahmi Fadzil explain the use of CMA against schoolchildren.
