KUALA LUMPUR: A protest against Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi which was supposed to take place at the party’s headquarters at World Trade Centre (WTC) Kuala Lumpur failed to materialise.

A total of 260 police personnel from 30 teams were deployed to WTC following a poster that was circulated on social media with the title “Rally to save Umno”, and the hashtags ‘#UndurZahid’ (Zahid resign) and ‘#DemiMalaysia’ (For Malaysia).

According to Dang Wangi district police chief Noor Dellhan Yahaya, 16 teams were deployed from Bukit Aman federal police headquarters while the rest were from the Dang Wangi district police headquarters.

“We will continue to monitor the situation until we are satisfied that there’s no security risk here,” he told the media.

Police officers were seen patrolling the building, with members of the media also on standby from 2pm for the planned rally.

It is believed that the rally was planned by Umno members who were upset about Barisan Nasional’s (BN) collaboration with Pakatan Harapan (PH) to form a unity government led by PH chairman Anwar Ibrahim.

Umno is the lynchpin of BN, which won 30 seats in Saturday’s general election (GE15). PH, meanwhile, won 82 seats.

Anwar yesterday confirmed that his unity government comprised of PH, BN, Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS), Warisan, Muda and Parti Bangsa Malaysia (PBM).

At a press conference today, Anwar said Gabungan Rakyat Sabah had agreed to join the unity government, thus giving it a two-thirds majority in the 222-seat Dewan Rakyat.
