Tony Pua ‘told party peers’ he will sit out GE15

Tony Pua and Ong Kian Ming came under criticism last year for supporting the Muhyiddin Yassin government.

PETALING JAYA: Tony Pua, who recently failed to be elected to DAP’s central executive committee, is to sit out the next general election, according to a Singapore news report.

Pua, who is Damansara MP, has made his intention clear to his colleagues before the party elections, the Straits Times reported.

The Singaporean daily said it has learnt of this from several top party figures that Pua “had made clear to his DAP peers he will not stand for a fourth parliamentary term”.

Pua did not have any comment when asked by the daily, as he had not made any announcement.

The daily said Bakri MP and former environment minister Yeo Bee Yin is also believed to be leaning “90-10” towards skipping the elections.

The report about Pua’s decision comes in the wake of two-term MP and former deputy minister Ong Kian Ming, announcing that he would not offer himself as a candidate for the national elections.

Ong had also failed to make it into the DAP’s leadership committee. He said he wanted to take a break from politics to “regroup and recharge”.

Last week, Sin Chew Daily quoted sources as saying that Pua had decided against contesting in GE15 even before DAP’s party polls.

Both Ong and Pua came under fire last year after they were seen to be leaning towards then prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin’s bipartisan political cooperation offer.

Muhyiddin had made such an overture in a last ditch attempt to keep his administration intact after Umno MPs withdrew support for him as prime minister.
