Rauf’s days as Melaka Umno chief numbered, says insider
Melaka Umno chief Ab Rauf Yusoh recently dismissed talk that he had been trying to push out Sulaiman Md Ali as chief minister.
PETALING JAYA: Ab Rauf Yusoh’s days as Melaka Umno chief are numbered amid mounting complaints against the Tanjung Bidara assemblyman, says a source in the know.
“Five division chiefs have already met Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi to demand he be replaced,” said a high-ranking party leader, who declined to be named.
The leader said the division chiefs had also signed a petition against Rauf, expressing their dissatisfaction with his leadership. “They say he is arrogant. They say he has made many decisions without consulting other division chiefs and chief minister Sulaiman Md Ali.”
The party insider said the division chiefs now want Sulaiman to be appointed the Melaka Umno chief and are adamant that this must happen before the next general election.
“Zahid is just waiting for the right time to move,” claimed the source.
Questions have been raised over Rauf’s fate ever since it was reported that he was absent from Sulaiman’s swearing-in following Barisan Nasional’s huge win in the Melaka elections.
Last week, Rauf dismissed talk in political circles that he has been trying to pressure Melaka chief minister Sulaiman Md Ali into resigning.
This came after the acting head of Alor Gajah Umno division, Rospandi Leman was reported as saying that Sulaiman had come under some form of coercion to sign a resignation letter, as speculated on social media over the last few days.
