KUALA LUMPUR: Muar MP Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman has asked fellow MPs to show the same outrage over the auditor-general’s expose on the loss of RM620 million in leakages as they did on the Timah whisky name controversy.
“For the last two weeks, we have been hearing a lot about the Timah issue on a daily basis, especially on the renaming of the whisky,” the independent MP said during the debate on the 2022 Supply Bill in the Dewan Rakyat.
“We have had a Cabinet meeting that involved three ministries on this matter despite this company existing in Malaysia for a long time.
“Will we give the same attention to the issue of the RM620 million loss in leakages? It is hundreds of millions of the people’s money.
“The Dewan is silent on this matter, but we highlighted the Timah issue as if it was the biggest issue facing the country. Is the Timah issue more important than the leakages, misappropriation of funds, quality education – the issues that concern the public?”
On Oct 28, auditor-general Nik Azman Nik Abdul Majid revealed that RM620.07 million in public funds was lost or wasted in 2020 because of the non-compliance of federal ministries and departments with financial management.
Nik Azman also said there was RM510.49 million in irregular payments, of which RM499.19 million involved payments for maintenance service claims that were not verified at the National Security Council (MKN) level.
Of the RM104.79 million loss in public funds, RM81.69 million involved unclaimed penalties not imposed by the immigration department, and RM4.79 million involved equipment that was received late and not installed at Istana Budaya.
