Well done Latheefa - eff the orange suit

From FMT:

No more orange suit for MACC suspects in court

The practice of bringing suspects to court in orange lock-up suits has been criticised by rights lawyers.

PUTRAJAYA: Suspects arrested by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) will no longer be made to wear the orange lock-up uniform when they are produced in court, a practice which sparked criticism from rights lawyers who say it is a violation of prison regulations as well as constitutional rights.
This is part of several reforms by the anti-graft commission under its new chief Latheefa Koya who is expected to announce it officially tomorrow.
“I have given orders that all persons arrested by MACC no longer have to put up with the orange uniform,” Latheefa said in an interview with FMT today.
“No more orange uniform,” she added.
Instead, suspects will only wear the orange suit in the lock-up.
Latheefa also said new rules on handcuffing detainees will be announced tomorrow.
In 2017, MACC came under criticism over its practice of producing graft suspects in court clad in the commission’s orange lock-up suit.
Among the critics were rights lawyer N Surendran, who said it was a violation of prison regulations, civil as well as constitutional rights.
Then chief commissioner Dzulkifli Ahmad had however defended the practice.
Among high-profile suspects who were brought to court clad in the orange suit were former Felda chairman Isa Samad and Penang exco Phee Boon Poh.

********
Poor Phee, sue the sh*t out of MACC lah.
But I applaud Latheefa beebi Koya's action - let's get rid of vestiges of American-style oppression & humiliation for people who haven't been proven guilty yet. Besides, as lawyer Surendran said, forcing suspects to wear the orange suit is a violation of prison regulations, civil as well as constitutional rights.

  1. The intent of making the suspect wear bright orange is to be able to easily identify and catch him if somehow he manages to escape the custody of his guards. This is especially true when brought outside the lockup like in transit to court and if there is a huge crowd there like in the picture shown. If dressed normally he could blend and disappear into the crowd. Then we would be having a different discussion now.

Maybe this only happens in the movies....but then in Malaysia life is like the movies....

What’s the point of making them wear the orange suit with words LOKAP while they are safely and securely confined inside the lokap? It’s while they are outside that’s the problem. The decision to wear or not to wear should be made case by case. In the Phee case I don’t think he would try to escape.

So I think making them wear the orange suit is fine, just remove the LOKAP words. Or make the suspects wear non-removable location trackers around their ankles.

Having said that I think Latheefa is doing a great job, still waiting for that list of 400 names.

  2. Talking about constitutional rights I think anti-death penalty supporters will be so happy that the Harapan government will be proposing to remove the “mandatory” word for drug related offences. One small step forward for Malaysia.

Word ‘mandatory’ to be removed from laws prescribing death penalty

THE word “mandatory” preceding “death sentence” will be removed from laws against drug trafficking, Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad today said.

It will be left to the presiding judge to decide whether to sentence the convicted party to death or jail for no less than 10 years, he said.

  3. More reforms coming....and the Opposition just got their bluff called.
Harapan set a trap for the opposition and they fell for it.

The opposition thought they could thump their chest with the Bill for 18-yo voting age by setting additional conditions like automatic voter registration and 18-yo to stand as candidate...their poker hand was immediately called now they are snookered.....ha ha. Now they must support to give 2/3 majority, unless they come up with more conditions or reason like "God does not permit, this is communist ideology bla bla bla"

  4. I doubt any party would nominate an 18-yo as candidate unless they want to make a donation to the EC, or if this 18-yo is a silly independent lone ranger. I think the current election law states 21 years of age and even then has not been breached. Praba was close though (22-yo) but Batu folks were voting for TC, not him.

  5. The system became untenable after Najib was allowed to turn up in court in a business suit instead.
I was very unhappy with that exception made, and MACC received a lot of brickbats as well.

  6. Wakakakakakakaka

I am back to torture the souls of Kaytee and his Mateys, racists and religious bigots.

Let's start off with me totally agreeing doing away with the Guantanamo (orange) coloured suits which was started to intimidate and humiliate opposition members under the previous BN regime as part of the MACC reforms, after their previously disastrous cover ups/political bungling by Deep State players within the MACC.

So, suspects brought to courts are now allowed to wear Armani made suits, Baju Melayu and songkok, Jubah and Ketayap, to show their public image elegance and piety and the image of pious Moslems don't tell lies (as quoted by one ex-Chief Justice)?

So, non-Moslems can also wear their cultural or religious clothing and holy thy Father/Mother clothing?

And those who happen to be born LGBTQs are allowed to wear Rainbow coloured clothings?

What will happen, if the suspect belong to the Nudist colony or IS/Al Qaeda/JI inspired groups? Are they allowed their own inspired form of what to wear to impress the public?

Would there be another change to the attire/clothing (or no attire) if Malaysia's Marie Antoinette suddenly appear in court in her finest attire, big hair do, Birkin handbags and not forgetting the Big big necklace pendant?

Wakakakakakaka Ah! Women's priorities will always be attire/clothing as usual.

  7. Latheefa is slowly but surely winning over those Kong Kali Kong noisemakers who protested her unilateral non-process-compliant appointment.

Judge me by my actions, not by my ribbons or fruit salad they put on my stuffy uniform shirt. When I finish my job here at MACC can I bring them along with me? No? Never mind. I don't think they will match any of my baju kurungs anyway. Wait la soon I will reveal another 400 names, after that I may go white haired rabbit hunting over in Sarawak. You will see I mean business.
