PH govt GROSSLY remiss in NOT repealing Sedition Act

From FMT:

Why the increased jail sentence for Wan Ji? Lawyer asks amid renewed calls for Sedition Act repeal

KUALA LUMPUR, July 9 — The public prosecutor must explain why preacher Wan Ji Wan Hussin was handed a heavier jail sentence despite Putrajaya’s stated intention to repeal the Sedition Act, a lawyer said today.

Syahredzan Johan said that the one-year sentence was not in line with the government’s efforts to repeal the Act.

Preacher Wan Ji Wan Hussein

Wan Ji was a former aide to Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng. He worked with Lim when the latter was Penang CM, and then left to set up an NGO focusing on interfaith dialogue

“Although the Sedition Act has not been abolished and still in force, the government has repeatedly expressed its intention to repeal the Act.

“In fact, the prosecutor himself has withdrawn several charges under the Act previously, in line with the Federal Government's policy on the Act,” the civil liberties lawyer said in a statement.

“Therefore, the public prosecutor must clarify why his party has appealed to impose a heavier sentence on Wan Ji, contrary to the Federal Government's policy on the Sedition Act,” he added, saying that repealing the Act would also mean that fellow Malaysians like Wan Ji would not be convicted under an “archaic and oppressive” law.

The High Court in Shah Alam today rejected Wan Ji’s appeal against his conviction for making seditious remarks against Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah seven years ago.

Firstly, I am a busybody and would like to know what sort of remarks Wan Ji made against HRH Sultan Selangor that have been as seditious?

And Syahredzan Johan has deemed that convicting clause as an “archaic and oppressive” law.

That brings me to No 2, which is when Pakatan, especially PKR and DAP, would make some noise?

OK, DAP doesn't want to seen as anti-monarchy, wakakaka, so what about PKR? Hey mates, Wan Ji is a member of PKR lah. I am pleased to say Anwar Ibrahim has the decency to say the sentence has been too harsh, and that it is not something consistent with the democratic transition.

But MM Online reported (extract only):

Bersih 2.0 chairman Thomas Fann said Wan Ji’s sentencing was a clear sign that the government is not committed in abolishing the Sedition Act.

“Pakatan Harapan is not committed to abolish the Sedition Act and seem like it there is no intention to uphold the freedom of expression as stipulated in Article 10 of the Federal Constitution."

Now, Suaram too wants Tommy Thomas to explain, wakakaka.

Thirdly, yes, why hasn't the Sedition Act been repealed yet, when that has been the stated intention of the Pakatan government a year ago?

One eff-ing year into government and instead we're talking about Car No 3, Kasut Hitam, Cambridge University in the USA, a biadab-ish chef who doesn't like Najib and 'breeding like cats' lepak-ing FELDA settlers, and Greater Malay Unity to crowd-support Mahathir & gang.

And then, here we have it in the 21st Century, a man charged with and convicted of sedition against a state ruler and to cap it off, with a much HEAVIER sentence than previously sentenced, to wit, from 9 months to one year.

  2. This will go the same way as ICERD, Rome Statute.

Repeal of Sedition Law will be:
    Anti-Islam/Hindu/Christian/Royalty/Etc

There will be threats of violence, mass rallies etc.

Whoever is in government will have to kick it down the road.

Sad but this is the society we inherited.

As for Wan Ji’s case are you suggesting the Harapan government influenced the judiciary to increase the sentence?

Poor AG. He has a lot of explaining to do why his PP went ahead to enhance the sentence of Wan Ji under the Sedition Act for Les Majeste.

So, what about the Judiciary? Why did the Judge in the High Court also agreed to enhance the sentence?

Is it because HRH Sultan is not happy with the sentence or is it because of Deep State players within the AGC?

So, when can the Senate be majoritised by PH so that the Sedition Act can be repealed as stated by the Law Minister before the end of 2019?
