Dr Mahathir & PKR - birds of same feathers?

On Friday 15 April 2011 I posted RPK and the necessary destruction of Anwar Ibrahim? where I commented on the attitude of anwaristas that:

… those who criticize PKR, like RPK, must have been paid (by BN) while those who criticize BN are deemed to be doing the right thing.

In the aftermath of the Sarawak election results, PKR supporters irritated me when they condemned Ibans as stupid for succumbing to the BN’s money politics.

To those anwaristas, people who exercised their democratic rights to vote for a party are stupid because they failed to vote for PKR. That’s the pathetic state of their mentality and understanding of democracy. Quite frankly I dread to see these PKR people in ruling power.

Now, it seems that Dr Mahathir has the same attitude too. Today, The Malaysian Insider (TMI) reported him stating that Sarawak Chinese have been infected by DAP racism.

What led him to this conclusion?

According to TMI, Dr Mahathir accused the DAP of destroying the so-called 'power-sharing formula' that BN had implemented for half a century. More of this 'power-sharing formula' later.

He said: “I congratulate the DAP for bringing its racist politics to Sarawak. Before this, all races co-operated well with each other for the good of Sarawak. Now we see clearly that the Chinese community in Sarawak has rejected multiracialism.”

“They have become infected by the virus of Chinese racism that is the guiding principle of the DAP.”

So like PKR, Dr Mahathir sees his political views in black & white tones only, that if a Chinese votes or have voted for DAP, he/she must be a racist.

Now, that by itself would not have been so bad if we are not immediately reminded that Dr M is the patron of the Malay ultra-rightwing Perkasa, a man who has constantly urged Malays to be united and vote for UMNO to protect Malay rights from the Chinese.

So, what does that make him then?

The editorial of TMI has this to say of him and his comments about DAP infecting Sarawakians with racism:

Two days after the key Sarawak election, those batting for Barisan Nasional (BN) are talking about the loss of Chinese votes to DAP with Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad right in front calling them racists for drawing the community away from the ruling coalition.

The country’s longest-serving prime minister and one-time mover of Bangsa Malaysia is a fine one to talk.

Since 2008 he has been the patron of Perkasa the right-wing group that fights to preserve everything for the Malays at the expense of others.

For Dr Mahathir and Perkasa everything is at risk from the non-Malays although the Federal Constitution already provides safeguards through the Malay Rulers.

In his blog today Dr Mahathir wrote among others, “I congratulate the DAP for bringing its racist politics to Sarawak. Before this all races co-operated well with each other for the good of Sarawak. Now we see clearly that the Chinese community in Sarawak has rejected multi-racialism.”

“Perhaps the SUPP are at fault but others in the BN also committed many wrong things. But the rejection is almost entirely by the Chinese community.”

In his world-view and through his writing Dr Mahathir does not believe that people can make up their own minds and decide to vote for whoever they want, the essence of democracy.

Perhaps he does not see that the policies put in place by his administration such as privatisation has resulted in endemic corruption abuse of power and the weakening of the country’s institutions - some of the factors which has caused Malaysians to lose faith in BN.

Dr Mahathir does not lead BN now. It is Datuk Seri Najib Razak and before him Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi. Abdullah carried the baggage of Dr Mahathir’s rule but crumbled under the weight of his own unfulfilled promises. Now it’s Najib’s turn and his six days for the Sarawak campaign is a measure of what he had to do to counter criticisms against Dr Mahathir’s contemporary Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud.

Yet Dr Mahathir only sees what he sees.

“I will be called a racist for pointing this out. For more than half a century the races in Malaysia had worked together to build the nation. The world saw stable BN governments with power and wealth being shared by all races quite fairly. None of the races got everything that they considered they were entitled to, not the Malays nor the Chinese nor Indians nor Ibans, Kadazans etc. All had to give up something. That is the essence of sharing. Now the DAP has destroyed this power and wealth-sharing formula by separating the Chinese from the rest,” he also wrote today.

Thing is Dr Mahathir is just not the right person to level any such accusations.

When he and others talk about the BN style or formula, what they mean is keeping cronyism and institutional racism entrenched.

He is no honest broker in this exercise of dissecting the Sarawak election and its aftermath. Malaysians have a right to vote whichever way they want. Taib returned 35 out of 35 seats back to the BN. Presumably there are people happy with his rule.

Yet there are others who are not happy and want an alternative. Nothing racist about that. It’s simply called democracy, the right to differ not defer.

Kaytee concludes that some PKR people and Dr Mahathir share the same lamentable attitude.

  1. This is politics. As you rightly said, there is no black & white. But I find so is your analysis of Mahathir's views.

  3. wealth shared by all?

all means your family? how did your family became billionaires within one generation? Indian blood malays are superb businessmen only?

whats Perkasa? tell me Mahatir why Perkasa is not racist? and you are the patron of Perkasa. what makes you then? Bapa 1Malaysia my foot. At least, I respect Najib's efforts though I know ultras like Mahatir will try to derail his efforts to protect his family's wealth.

  4. DAP is simply put..., an extension of the PAP of Singapore. The same mentality and attitude (i.e. Kiasu) and same political structure & modus operandi (i.e. cadre system).

As long as the Chinese interests (especially in education & economy) is protected and ensured..., the DAP couldn't care less who their 'minority' candidates are..., like (say) Karpal Singh..., who racially speaking does not even represent 1% of the country's population. A good political strategy though..., under the guise of a 'multi-racial' political party.

If UMNO declares openly its struggle for the interest of the Malays..., and rightly so..., however DAP keeps its Chinese interests agenda within only closed circles.

Yes..., Dr. Mahathir is correct in dubbing the DAP in conforming to racist politics..., but Dr. Mahathir fail to hint that DAP also subscribe to the Chinese 'Kiasu' attitude.

Unfortunately for the Malays though..., in PAS, PKR and some of those so-called 'Liberal Malays'..., who have failed to comprehend and see distinctly through this 'lack of clarity' in DAP's agenda.

    Too bad.

  5. Like George Bush said, If you are not with us, you are against us. How true ! In time like this, we need to try another government as the present one sucks, since we can't change the government Egypt style, we have to depend on the ballot box and the fact that the Dayaks voted for the Government who neglected them for years, if that's not stupidity then what is ?

The longer UMNO led government stay in power the higher risk of the country going bankrupt in future. Maybe the prediction of Malaysian going abroad as maid in near future may not sound ridiculous afterall

  6. " PKR supporters irritated me when they condemned Ibans as stupid for succumbing to the BN’s money politics..."

It is not only Ibans. Any voter who voted for a particular party because the party bribed him to do so is just plain stupid...more stupid than a cow.

So in S'wak State election, if the Ibans voted for a corrupt BN/Taib because they are given money, it just shows their stupidity. The same thing happened in Peninsular where stupid malays voted Umno because they were given a sarong & RM50-500 cash. They are more stupid than a cow which value is around RM2500/=. Even cows won't accept RM500/= to be slaughtered.

It baffles me why you are irritated by such comments. Grow up...man. This is M'sia..country with 3rd world mentality but 1st world infrastructure.

  7. non-jibaok,

How can you say that there's a hidden agenda "Chinese" in DAP's struggle? While it's true that the DAP was initially conceived/stemmed from PAP, now it has more then ever fight for a Malaysian cause. A Malaysian Malaysia where Justice is for all irregardless of race, religion or creed. Did any UMNO politicians go to jail for one of its resident under one of its constituency? Guan Eng did. A Malay girl, mind you, not a Chinese as you argue that the DAP only "cares" for the Chinese.

FYI, DAP is a Multi-racial party. It accepts membership for any and everyone that is Malaysian. If that's not Multi-racial then what is? Unlike UMNO, Malay only party.

There is nothing racist in the DAP campaign in Sarawak, every and anyone with a sound and logical mind can see that. It's all based on Facts and Figures, it has always been this way with the DAP when it comes to handling with issue and I believe it always will be.

It's not that the Malays in PAS or PKR can't see things clearly that they supported the DAP, it's because they truly believe in a Just Malaysia that is for everyone that is born in this wonderful land - Tanah Tumpah Darah Ku. Take off your coloured glasses and you will see things more clearly my friend but if you are already an UMNO cybertrooper, then don't bother :)

Coming back to this article, I don't see the reason for the writer to be angry with the comments made. If the Dayak/Ibans are still voting for the government that has mistreated them for years if not decades, if that's not called stupid, then what is? This is not about PRK, PAS or DAP. This is about electing a new government that will not mistreat its rakyat, is that so difficult to understand? Why the agitation then?

  8. Quite frankly I dread to see these PKR people in ruling power.

  9. Our friend just can't accept there are many approaches to solving problems but insist that his and only his is the only solution. Like that, country how to grow out of its adolescence. But maybe, in the grander scheme of things, is precisely that, to keep the country always in its adolescence with fear and candy.

I feel he has given up his right to comment after what he has done to the country. Can someone just tell him to "zip up, your fly is exposed!!!"

  10. Everyone in Malaysia has the right to vote who he or she wants. If you don't vote for the present government, that doesn't mean that you are wrong. The vote tells you that that you are not happy what is going on at the present. Look at Penang, it is under the opposition. It is doing very well. Ask the residents of Penang. The most important is how the ruling party govern the country. Don't bring racism. How can highly educated people stoop so low to give racists comments. Put you hand to your heart and speak what is right especially past and present leaders.

  11. //How can highly educated people stoop so low to give racists comments.//

They have to, in order to retain support from their racist followers, else they would be shoved aside by others dying to take their place. Case in point, Jib with his racist policies and Moo, who is waiting for the time to pounce.

  12. Jimbo..,

I have lived long enough to comprehend & understand some of the Chinese (but not all though) attitude & mentality in this beloved country Malaysia of ours.

No need for you to tell me that DAP is a multi-racial party..., I have already mentioned it, unless of course you fail to pay full attention my comments.

Nonetheless.., DAP is a political party that wins seats in hardcore 'kiasu' Chinese areas. The MCA Party (a full-fledged Chinese party - much more senior than DAP) and Parti Gerakan (a moderate but also Chinese dominant party) can have no chance whatsoever in contending and face-off with DAP in a 'kiasu' and hardcore Chinese dominant area.

As an example, in the parliamentary areas of WP Kuala Lumpur like (say) Bukit Bintang, Siputeh & Kepong..., MCA & Gerakan can dream on in ever hoping to win and capturing these parliamentary seats..., despite them being moderate but dominant Chinese parties.

In strategy.., DAP can even field even a non-Chinese candidate (like say Karpal Singh) in Bukit Bintang or Siputeh against a pure Chinese MCA candidate in those area..., nonetheless the Chinese voters in those hardcore areas will surely give their votes to Karpal Singh..., not because he a good and famous lawyer.., but because they give their votes to a Chinese interest based party - i.e. The DAP...!

In Sarawak, DAP have managed to coerce the 'moderate' Chinese voters to now become and behave like hardcore 'kiasu' Chinese voters. That is racist politics.

Many have dubbed UMNO a racist Malay party. Most UMNO members would NOT rebutt that allegation but dismiss it as pure envy on the part of its opponents. Nonetheless, many have failed to realise that UMNO is the most tolerant and compromising political party in the nation..., as most Malays are by nature.

But the 'kiasu' mentality of some Chinese (who holds the greater portion of wealth & economy of the nation of Malaysia) are definitely non-compromising. They have the wealth..., and now they the power...! This can be a very dangerous situation for the nation, if left unnoticed and unchecked...!

The key to stability and harmony in any nation is..., fair and balance. Is our beloved nation well-balanced in terms of education and economy..., I ask you? Is our socio-economy well received by all..?

Anyway..., you must thank your lucky stars that despite some of the shortcomings and 'deficiencies' of the UMNO and Malay led government of Malaya and now Malaysia..., nonetheless it is a great awe and wonder of how such a (Malay) government can run nation so superbly and with great balance & care..., in handling its people from such diverse background ranging from the difference of religion, race, language, culture, ethnicity as well as the rich and the poor.

No particular race nor nation in this world (with such diversity) can claim this kind of ability or record..., which the UMNO cum Malay led government have superbly done since before the Independence of our Nation.

The Chinese led DAP have been given the chance to lead and run the state of Penang. But why so much discontentment in that state today. And..., don't come tell us that it was UMNO led instigation as being culprits to such uproar. Leaders must know how handle & solve problem..., not merely point their finger at the problem and hope the problem will simply go away.

Thus.., The Chinese 'kiasu' DAP is definitely incapable is leading and running a multi-racial state and society...., unlike what the UMNO and Malay led government have superbly shown for past donkey years now..., through the Alliance Party and now via the BN Coalition Party.

    ReplyDelete
  13. You need be so angry when they condemned Ibans as stupid for succumbing to the BN’s money politics. Just be a bit more tolerant of others' views. There may be some truth in what they say. Have you thought of that?

  14. To the anonymous commentor on 6:25 AM, April 19, 2011...,

Your comments as such - "Maybe the prediction of Malaysian going abroad as maid in near future may not sound ridiculous after all..." may rang true if Malaysia do go bust.

If such a scenario would happen (God forbid)..., the maids going abroad will surely not be Chinese maids from Malaysia..., but most probably would be Malay, Indian, Iban, Kadazan and even Orang Asli maids..., to make ends meet for their families.

Why so..? Well if the nation goes bankrupt..., the rich, wealthy and most of the well-to-do Chinese would surely immigrate to other nations. These kind of creatures show no loyalty to the soil they stand on.., but more so of their loyalty would be to wealth and money. Its their nature and culture.

But most rich Malays would stay put - because of the 'Tanah Tumpah Darah Ku' attitude..., but some 'liberal' Malays would also migrate to 'greener' pasture. A fragment of those rich Indians would still have the nation of India to 'invest' as their new home...., thus leaving behind their wretched lower-income class to contend with local conditions. That would be the social scenario if Malaysia goes bust..., May God Almighty forbid.

And you dare say - "The longer UMNO led government stay in power the higher risk of the country going bankrupt in future".

Well..., let's judge from past records. From meagre means.., since the British Colonial Masters had robbed our nations wealth & resources..., the UMNO led government had to start from scratch and had to borrow from The World Bank & foreign institutions to build & develop the people & the Nation.

I still remember that even in the years of the 80's, Malaysia still had to borrow money from The World Bank to build infrastructures & schools for our children. This is a known fact...! And foreign financial institutions simply love Malaysia, because our UMNO led government managed the funds very well and paid those loans on or before time.

Fast-forward 20 years later (under the leadership of Dr. Mahathir).., we now see Malaysia as being as an exemplary 3rd world nation as it is today..! Malaysia have come a long, long way indeed.

And yet we have assholes who whine, gripe & complain of our current situation. How forgetful & ungrateful some idiot Malaysians can be...!

The Chinese work very hard for their wealth and so have every right to migrate to any other countries which will welcome them with open arms knowing the hard-working nature and civilized culture of the Chinese. 20. "Dr Mahathir & PKR - birds of same feathers?"

Not surprising at all.... Isn't Dr M and Anwar (PKR) at one time so tight that they were like father and son?

So, bapak borek, anak rintek lah. Although if given even time and power, the son might overtake the father to become even more 'terror'.

The TMI editioral piece is spot on ! Dr M sees only what he wants to see. And impeteously spew out his racism to all and sundry whenever things do not go his way.

I took the liberty to quote a wise old commentator's comment by the name of Walla (from another blog) :

" Global relevance, adminstrative integrity, executive efficiency and principle-based fairness have all slid precipitously...." when he commented on the state of affairs we have now in this country.

Without fail, in every election, be it general, state or by election, race and religion will be played to the hilt; and when the result is less than desired for the BN government, its MSM mouthpiece will sought to pin the blame on those voters who voted for the opposition, labelling them ingrates, communists, racists, kiasu, opportunists etc.

But in 1999, when one of the sectors of the voting communities, the chinese, voted for the BN government, thus saving it from going down, we don't get to hear any of these castigations like what we are hearing now about the Sarawakian chinese.

So, who are the opportunists now ?

The commentor failed to realise that Dr. Mahathir had to concede numerous concessions to the Chinese 'Siqiu' quarters. Subsequently, the Chinese votes were delivered (to sustain BN's 2/3 majority) and concessions honoured by the Mahathir Administration till this very day..., naturally to the dismay of some Bumiputra quarters.

No need to table-out what the concessions were..., nonetheless a deal was made delivered and honoured.

Thus.., as any typical Chinese Kiasu mentality.., nothing is for free...! So.., who are the opportunists now...?

"The commentor failed to realise that Dr. Mahathir had to concede numerous concessions to the Chinese 'Siqiu' quarters. Subsequently, the Chinese votes were delivered (to sustain BN's 2/3 majority) and concessions honoured by the Mahathir Administration till this very day.."

What were the Siqui demands ?

    "They were basically
civil rights-based proposals for reform - ranging from issues such as
the environment and women to human rights and democracy - but they did
not sit well with the government, especially Prime Minister Datuk Seri
    Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

In his annual National Day address in August, he upset the Chinese
when he spoke about the Siqui demands in the context of communists and
deviationist Islamic groups. Says Dr Kua: 'People thought it was not
in good taste.' " quote fr Joceline Tan, currently the columnist for the STAR.

As most were aware, the government went from supporting the demands of Siqui to rejecting the most important ones. So 'a deal was made and honoured'?

If a deal originates from the chinese as in this Siqui case, then of course it must be the 'typical Chinese Kiasu mentality...nothing is for free'.

If it is the deal supposedly made in the so-called Social Contract, then it must be sacrilegious to label the malays typical Malay Kiasu mentality.... nothing is for free ?

Btw, try as one might, it is nigh impossible to find this elusive social contract in the constitution or elsewhere.

So I still maintain, who are the opportunists now ?

Like I just said, Malaysia is my country. You challenge and dare me to migrate? I only accept challenges from intelligent people. Only a damn racist brown slime will go around calling others racist.

You tell me to shut up. I can tell you the same thing. But I don’t coz I am a civilized person who believes in courteous and unemotional debate. This is the difference between you and me. You haven’t developed to the stage I am in and this makes me feel so superior to you.

Other people have made it in life. But you don’t have the ability to make it and your only ability lies in being jealous of other people, more so if they are not of your race. Only inferior people are jealous of others and they will continue to be inferior as long as they possess this feeling of jealousy.

From your comment, one can easily tell you are a person who is suffering from extreme emotional instability. Your emotions control you. You need some kind of urgent specialist treatment.

So why do you stay back when you accuse that your personal wealth may eventually be looted by those lazy UMNO leaders & members...! Why not run away now.

Who knows after the remarks you have made..., that many UMNO members will come and search for you and teach you a lesson or two. Anyway since you accuse UMNO people of bankrupting this nation..., then better for you to leave and find a better home elsewhere.

Clearly, you are uneducated and unintelligent fool. You have no respect for those in authority & government and you insinuate a race of people (as being lazy) in this country.

Having said this..., I dare you to leave this nation..., after having insulted a credible ruling party (which you have dubbeed as lazy and refused-to-work-hard parasites) that have brought Independence this great nation..., from the claws of British Colonisation & Imperialism.
