Before 9/11, Uzbekistan was mud in the eyes of the USA, because of its appalling human rights record. The State Department’s report on her brutalities was “a litany of horrors”, making the central Asian country truly feral.
But now, instead of the USA exercising its much-loved pronouncement of ‘regime change’ we see American partnership with a global thug.
Bush has even welcomed Uzbekistan’s President Islam Karimov to the White House - as he did with Ariel Sharon. The USA has given that ‘regime’ more than $500 million for border control and other security measures.
Kim Jong-il, don’t fret about Bush’s tirade against you - there may yet be hope.
