Negeri Sembilan ruler Tuanku Muhriz Tuanku Munawir has denied receiving any formal invitation from his Perak counterpart, Sultan Nazrin Shah, to attend the Conference of Rulers meeting from Oct 13 to 15.

In a statement today, Negeri Sembilan palace royal comptroller Azizi Mohamad Ali said that an invitation is also not required for attendance to the said meeting.

"Furthermore, His Highness has also not received any letter or royal invitation from the chairperson of the meeting, His Highness the Perak sultan, to attend the pre-council meeting of the Conference of Rulers.

"Nevertheless, His Highness has decided not to attend the Conference of Rulers and will focus on state affairs in Negeri Sembilan, namely the ceremony to proclaim the undang of Jelebu.


"In addition, the Negeri Sembilan palace wishes to stress that it has not previously issued any media statement on this matter to any party or media organisation," Azizi said.

Earlier today, Straits Times reported that the invitation by Sultan Nazrin Shah, who will chair the meeting at Istana Negara in Kuala Lumpur, came amid an ongoing dispute over Negeri Sembilan’s royal succession.

The report claimed that rival claimant to the Negeri Sembilan throne Tunku Nadzaruddin Tuanku Ja’afar was not invited to the meeting despite repeated requests through various rulers and Menteri Besar Ismail Lasim to secure an invitation in place of Tuanku Muhriz.


However, according to the report, Tuanku Muhriz had informed Sultan Nazrin that he would only be attending the pre-council meeting on Oct 13, which will not be attended by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar.

Tuanku Muhriz is expected to preside over the appointment of a new Jelebu chieftain on Oct 14.

With Jelebu’s new appointment, three of the four undangs are expected to be regarded as aligned with Tuanku Muhriz, according to the report.


The daily also attributed the tensions surrounding the ruler to his public position against corruption and abuse of power, particularly in judicial appointments, which it said had earned him powerful adversaries among the elite.

“These include Umno leaders who are spearheading the move to pardon former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak,” it added.

A source close to the Negeri Sembilan palace told the newspaper that Tuanku Muhriz could use the Jelebu appointment to make a public statement on the unfolding crisis.

A construction worker previously charged with kidnapping a Palestinian man was sentenced to three years in prison by the Kuala Lumpur High Court today for abducting and confining the man at a chalet four years ago.

Justice Arief Emran Arifin imposed the sentence on Edy Ko’im Said, 46, after he pleaded guilty to an alternative charge of abducting and confining the man.

The court ordered the father of three to begin serving his prison sentence today, Bernama reported.

According to the alternative charge, Edy Ko’im was accused of forcibly abducting the 31-year-old victim with the intention of secretly and unlawfully confining him at 10.40pm on Sept 28, 2022.

He was charged under Section 365 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum prison sentence of seven years and also provides for a fine.

Police rescued the Palestinian man at a chalet in Hulu Langat, Selangor. He was found with his hands and feet bound with cable ties.

Deputy public prosecutor Mahadhir Khairudin called for a deterrent sentence.

Defence counsel Kelvinder Singh Sidhu urged the court to impose the minimum prison term, stating that his client was supporting his wife and three children.

The trial of seven other accused charged with kidnapping the same victim continued today. They are Tengku Arif Bongsu Hamid, 45, Naziree Mustapha, 45, Faizull Hardey Isa, 46, Iqmal Abdul Rahis, 31, Zaidi Zain, 60, Nidarahayu Zainal, 40, and Raibafie Amdan, 45.

According to the charge, all the accused had acted with a common intention to detain the victim so as to obtain a reward in exchange for secret information on developing and deactivating computer software used to hack mobile phones.

They were charged under Section 3 of the Kidnapping Act 1961, read together with Section 34 of the Penal Code. If convicted, they face a prison term of between 30 and 40 years and whipping.

Apart from the kidnapping case, Tengku Arif, Nidarahayu and her husband, Raibafie, face 19 money laundering charges involving more than RM250,000 under Section 4(1)(b) of the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001.

On July 10, 2025, six men were sentenced to five years’ imprisonment after pleading guilty to alternative charges of abducting and confining the same victim.

They were Norakmal Hassan, 46, Azwan Jamaludin, 42, Dody Junaidi, 47, Sufian Saly, 28, Tengku Hazarul Ismail Hamid, 54, and Muhammad al Hatim Fauzi, 28.

‘Mentega Terbang’, which touches on the differences and similarities of the major religions in Malaysia, was released in November 2021 before the home ministry banned it two years later.

A prosecution witness in the criminal trial of “Mentega Terbang” director Khairi Anwar Jailani and producer Tan Meng Kheng has testified that the film had offended her and hurt her feelings as a Muslim.

Yamna Ismail, 39, said in her witness statement that several scenes involving faith, reincarnation, prejudice, double standards towards Islam, and comparative religion had offended her.

“I was deeply offended because this film has openly insulted, belittled, mocked and ridiculed Islam,” said the housewife.

“After watching the film, I am of the opinion that it contains elements and characteristics of blasphemy against Islam.

“The film could lead Muslims astray in matters of faith.”

Yamna said the film, as she understood it, was about a 16-year-old girl named Aisyah who explored various religions in search of an answer to the question, “What happens when we die?”

She said she was offended by a scene in which Aisyah appeared unbothered by eating a pau (bun) containing pork, and another scene in which Aisyah touched a dog without a valid reason.

Yamna also took issue with a scene in which Aisyah invited her friend Suresh into a room to complete an assignment.

She said she lodged a police report after watching the film at her home on Feb 26, 2023.

The film will be screened in court before magistrate Heng Yi Min tomorrow, followed by cross-examination by the defence.

Khairi, 34, who also wrote the screenplay, and Tan, 39, were charged on Jan 17, 2024, with intentionally wounding the religious feelings of others.

The charge under Section 298 of the Penal Code carries a maximum jail term of one year, a fine, or both, upon conviction.

Lawyers Zaid Malek and Mahajoth Singh represented Khairi and Tan, while deputy public prosecutors Nor Azizah Aling and Nadia Izhar appeared for the prosecution.

The defence team also included Nandakumar S Haridas, Karl Rafiq Nadzarin and Reenajir Kaur Golen.

“Mentega Terbang” was released on Nov 28, 2021 before the home ministry banned it on Sept 1, 2023.

In July, the Court of Appeal upheld the home minister’s decision to ban the screening and publicity of the film, ruling that the prohibition was lawful and that the relevant provisions of the Film Censorship Act were constitutional.
