Former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has slammed the Government for compromising national sovereignty by signing a reciprocal trade agreement with the United States (US).


He further criticised Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim for not consulting Parliament or legal experts before putting his signature on it.

In a press conference, Mahathir said the move was like “handing Malaysia over to the United States” and that the agreement was “a foolish move”.


“This agreement is a foolish move by the Government, which immediately and recklessly signed it. Meanwhile, other ASEAN countries did not sign the agreement. Why is Malaysia handing itself over to the United States, when ASEAN countries took time to review the agreement, while Malaysia only took two days?” he asked.

He also claimed that American companies have effectively been given Bumiputera status under a reciprocal trade agreement between Malaysia and the US, calling it “a betrayal of Malaysia’s independence“.


Mahathir added that the deal would force Malaysia to buy goods from the US and give Washington a say in the country’s future trade policies.


“We are forced to follow this agreement, which requires us to purchase billions worth of goods from America. We have to buy gas from America, we have to buy aircraft from America. Sixty Boeing planes will be bought under this deal. It means we are no longer free.”

A police report was filed against Anwar

In a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Department and the Attorney General’s Chambers on 3 November, earlier claims that the trade deal undermined the country’s sovereignty were dismissed, with officials saying Malaysia can terminate the agreement if needed.

Meanwhile, local media reported that the trade agreement signed with US President Donald Trump had been carefully reviewed by senior government officials to ensure Malaysia’s interests were protected.

TOKYO, Nov 27 — Japan denied today a Wall Street Journal report that said US President Donald Trump had advised Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi not to provoke China over Taiwan’s sovereignty.

The row between Asia’s two biggest economies began after Takaichi suggested this month that Tokyo could intervene militarily in any attack on self-ruled Taiwan, which China claims as part of its territory.

According to Beijing’s foreign ministry, Chinese leader Xi Jinping pressed the issue in a phone call with Trump on Monday, saying Taiwan’s return was an “integral part of the post-war international order”.

The WSJ reported on Thursday that, shortly after that discussion, “Trump set up a call with Takaichi and advised her not to provoke Beijing on the question of the island’s sovereignty”. It cited unidentified Japanese officials and an American briefed on the call.


However, Japan’s top government spokesman Minoru Kihara denied the Journal’s account.


“The article has a passage that says, on the question of Taiwan’s sovereignty, (Trump) advised her not to provoke the Chinese government. There is no such fact,” Kihara told a regular media briefing, without elaborating.

Takaichi said in her reporting of the call with Trump that they discussed the US president’s conversation with Xi, as well as bilateral relations.


“President Trump said we are very close friends, and he offered that I should feel free to call him anytime,” she said.

But according to the WSJ, “the Japanese officials said the message was worrying”.

“The president didn’t want friction over Taiwan to endanger a detente reached last month with Xi, which includes a promise to buy more agricultural products from American farmers hit hard by the trade war,” it said.

‘Seriously erroneous’

Beijing, which has threatened to use force to take control of the self-ruled island, responded furiously to Takaichi’s initial remarks in parliament on November 7.

It summoned Tokyo’s ambassador and advised Chinese citizens against travelling to Japan.

The Chinese embassy in Japan warned people to be careful again on Wednesday, saying there had been a surge in crime and that Chinese citizens had reported “being insulted, beaten and injured for no reason”.

Japan’s foreign ministry denied any increase in crime, citing figures from the National Police Agency in response that showed the number of murders from January to October had halved compared to the same period in 2024.

Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun reiterated today a call for Japan to officially retract Takaichi’s comments.

“The Japanese side’s attempt to downplay, dodge, and cover up Prime Minister Takaichi’s seriously erroneous remarks by not raising them again is self-deception,” Guo told a regular news briefing.

KOTA KINABALU, Nov 27 — Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the resignation of his senior political secretary Datuk Seri Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin, who has been linked to corruption allegations, shows that the Madani Government upholds a high level of integrity.

The Prime Minister said Shamsul Iskandar’s decision to step down was unprecedented in the country’s administration.

“He immediately resigned and requested that the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) conduct an investigation. Has that ever happened before? Only then can we claim integrity.

“In the past, if the Prime Minister was investigated, relatives fled abroad. What kind of integrity is that?” Anwar said during a town hall session at the “PMX Sayang Sabah Bersama Anak Muda Inanam” programme here today.


The Prime Minister also said he consistently reminds all his staff to take responsibility if found involved in any misconduct that undermines integrity.

“I told my staff: if you are found guilty, you have to face the music, full investigations; take it to court — only then are we truly protecting this country,” he said.

He also emphasised that for Malaysia to achieve the status of a successful nation, the foundation must start with good governance.

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 27 — The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) today issued a warning for tropical storm Senyar, which has been detected north of Sumatra and is located about 102 kilometres southwest of Lumut, Perak.

The storm is moving southeast into the waters of the Straits of Malacca and heading towards the western Peninsular at a speed of around 24 km/h.

MetMalaysia director-general Mohd Hisham Mohd Anip said the conditions could bring persistent heavy rain, strong winds and rough seas across Peninsular Malaysia, particularly in the western and central states, from today until Saturday.

“MetMalaysia has updated the Tropical Storm Warning, Continuous Rainfall Warning, and Strong Wind and Rough Sea Warning for Kedah, Penang, Perak, Pahang, Selangor, the Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya, Negeri Sembilan, Melaka and Johor, effective from November 27 to 29,” he said in a statement.

He added that MetMalaysia will continue to monitor the development of the tropical storm and update information based on current conditions.

The severe-level continuous rainfall warning expected to persist until Saturday covers Kedah (Kulim and Bandar Baharu), Penang, Perak, Terengganu, Pahang (Cameron Highlands, Lipis, Raub and Bentong), Selangor, and the Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya.

An alert-level continuous rainfall warning has been issued for Kelantan; Pahang (Jerantut, Temerloh, Maran, Kuantan, Bera, Pekan and Rompin); Negeri Sembilan; Melaka; and Johor (Tangkak and Segamat).

The Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC) appealing against court-ordered citizenship verdicts was an outrageous betrayal, said lawyer Latheefa Koya.

She called on the prime minister to immediately instruct the AG to cease such unnecessary objections and for the government to speed up all pending cases of stateless Malaysians.

She was responding to the Court of Appeal’s decision that dismissed the AGC’s appeal against an Ipoh High Court’s order that granted citizenship to a three-generational stateless family in 2024.

“This decision poses a big question. Why did the Madani government pursue this case and appeal against a High Court decision which had affirmed the rights of people who were made generationally stateless?

“Especially when it was caused in the first place by the bureaucratic failures of the home ministry?

“This is not the only case. The Madani government is continuing this oppressive conduct and pursuing many other cases like this, all the way to the Federal Court.

“This is an outrageous betrayal by the Pakatan Harapan coalition as they had promised to resolve statelessness among Malaysians and took it (the issue) up to fish for votes,” Latheefa said in a statement today.

The former MACC chief commissioner noted that Harapan leaders used to speak up on cases like this.

But now, she claimed, the same leaders and the government have turned out to be the “oppressors”.

“Why are the full resources of this government being used to prevent poor stateless people from being recognised as citizens?

“The majority of them cannot afford lawyers and cannot fight the massive resources of the government and the AGC.

“I am also appalled by the complicity of so many who are today in the federal cabinet and in government benches in Parliament, who are silent as the government continues to object to legitimate stateless persons’ pleas for recognition of citizenship of this country.”

Such silence, she added, is the worst kind of hypocrisy as it victimises the poor, the desperate, and the dispossessed, including thousands of children.

Appeal dismissed, citizenship reaffirmed

Yesterday, the Court of Appeal found “no appealable errors” in dismissing the government’s appeal against a High Court judgment that granted citizenship to Kamaladevi Kanniappan and her lineage.

Despite having Malaysian grandparents, Kamaladevi was not recognised as a citizen because her mother, Letchimee, only had a birth certificate and not an IC up until her death.

This made her children and grandchildren stateless due to her inability to register her marriage to a Malaysian man.

The appellate court also found that the stateless individuals were citizens by operation of law because the matriarch of the family was Malaysian.

GEORGETOWN, 12 Nov - Ketua Menteri Pulau Pinang, Chow Kon Yeow berkata jawapannya tetap sama seperti yang pernah dikeluarkan tiga tahun lalu.

Demikian reaksi Ketua Menteri itu susulan tindakan kerajaan negeri Kedah yang memulakan tindakan perundangan terhadap negeri itu berhubung isu kedudukan dan hubungan antara kedua negeri ini.

"Saya ulang jawapan tiga tahun lalu. Jumpa di mahkamah, itu sahaja," katanya pada sidang media hari ini.

Tahun lalu, Kon Yeow menggesa Menteri Besar Kedah, Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi supaya membuktikan kenyataannya di Parlimen berkait Pulau Pinang milik Kedah itu di mahkamah.

Mengulas lanjut, Kon Yeow berkata, kerajaan Pulau Pinang juga akan merujuk kepada Penasihat Undang-Undang Negeri berhubung isu yang surat berlarutan selama tiga tahun itu.

And Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow is also prepared to meet Sanusi on the legal battlefield in what could be regarded as an unprecedented case of one state attempting to demand an exorbitant amount of money from another sister state in the same federation of Malaysia.

It appears that Kedah is taking an easy and lazy way of boosting its state coffer by trying to “grab” or “extort” RM100 mil from a state that is economically strong and thriving.

However, Kedah does not need the RM100 mil because it is quite rich in terms of investment in its manufacturing sector. It has so much land for multinational companies to set up manufacturing bases compared to Penang which has limited land.

‘More of territorial dispute than lease payment’

In fact, according to the Department of Statistics (DOM), Kedah was the top performing state in the manufacturing sector last year with approved investments in manufacturing totalling RM44.1 bil against Penang’s RM17.3 bil.



Kedah recorded RM4.2 bil in investments in 1Q 2025 with the manufacturing sector contributing the largest share at RM3.9 bil in investments.

Nevertheless, Penang is forging ahead by recording RM15.78 bil in total investments up to September this year – a testimony to its successful exploitation of human talents in developing and expanding its high-value sectors such as designing software, semiconductors, electronics and logistics.

Hence, Penang is a thriving state under DAP leadership and this must surely be riling up Sanusi who is also PAS’ election director. Anything that DAP does – whether at state or federal level – is anathema to the religious fundamentalist party.

One suspects that the core issue is not about lease payment but more about territorial dispute.

Sanusi believes that Penang belongs to Kedah based on some 200-year-old historical record. Therefore, it follows that Penang should be incorporated into Kedah, perhaps, to make Kedah great or greater.

This is dangerous thinking because it essentially means that Penang will probably lose its statehood once it is swallowed up by Kedah.

‘Gunboat diplomacy’

Penang’s current boundaries will thus be erased and all its cultural and multi-religious and multi-racial characteristics will be buried – along with DAP – in the political graveyard of PAS.

This is a frightening scenario and one that will never materialise because Penangnites will surely put up a brave and stout defence of their birthplace.

What can Sanusi do if DAP refuses to concede to Kedah’s frivolous demand? Will the MB who holds an honorary military rank of first admiral of the Royal Malaysian Navy send his gunboats to bombard George Town into submission?



Will he use “gunboat diplomacy” to exact compensation?

Imagine Sanusi wearing his military uniform and standing on the deck of his vessel and eyeing the island with his binoculars in a bid to ferret out Chow – his opponent who is standing beside a row of old but usable cannons along the shores – all primed up to fire and sink the approaching enemy.

This “battle of Penang” will be fought largely between DAP and PAS and whoever emerges the victor will be writing a new chapter in Malaysian history entitled “Sanusi annexes Penang in hard-fought battle” or “Penang sinks Sanusi’s armada”.

Sanusi and all those supporting his claim on Penang including a cantankerous, centenary politician must realise that political instability and civil unrest will not do Malaysia any good.

It is best that all states in the federation move with the flow of the modern times and not dig out some ancient narratives to destroy the peace of the land. – Nov 27, 2025
