KUALA LUMPUR, July 2 — Malaysia will send a ministerial-level representative to attend the funeral of Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in Tehran tomorrow, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said today.

Anwar made the announcement after delivering his keynote address at the 39th Asia-Pacific Roundtable (APR) at the Grand Hyatt Kuala Lumpur today.

Ali Khamenei, 86, was Iran’s second and longest-serving supreme leader before he was killed in an Israeli airstrike in February this year. His son, Mojtaba Khamenei, has since succeeded him as the Islamic republic’s new supreme leader.

The funeral arrangements, however, were delayed until July due to the ongoing war involving US-backed Israeli forces.

The funeral is expected to conclude with the leader’s burial in his hometown, the northeastern holy city of Mashhad, on July 9, according to Reuters.

Separately, Iranian ambassador to Malaysia Valiollah Mohammadi told Malay Mail that Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu would represent Malaysia at the funeral in Tehran tomorrow.

“He (Anwar) also conveyed his solidarity to the Iranian people and the President (Masoud Pezeshkian) and asked that I send a message on his behalf to the president that Muhammad Sabu will attend the funeral,” Valiollah said when asked about Anwar’s brief interaction with him at the event.

HYDERABAD, July 2 — Malaysia and India reviewed various areas of military cooperation and explored opportunities to expand collaboration during the 12th India-Malaysia Sub Committee Meeting on Military Cooperation (SCMC).

The meeting held in New Delhi on Wednesday, was co-chaired by Indian Defence Ministry joint secretary Amitabh Prasad and Malaysian Armed Forces’ assistant chief of staff for defence operations and training, Major General Amer Mahmud Abdul Rahman.

“The two sides reviewed the entire spectrum of bilateral military cooperation and expressed satisfaction with the steady progress achieved,” India’s Defence Ministry said in a statement.

Discussions covered bilateral exercises, training, staff talks, capacity building and maritime cooperation.

Both sides also looked at opportunities to expand collaboration in the defence industry, technology, cyber security and humanitarian assistance and disaster relief, besides exchanging views on regional and global security developments, the Indian statement noted.

The visiting Malaysian delegation also called on defence secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh, visited the DPSU Bhawan, a hub for collaboration for Indian public sector defence undertakings, and laid a wreath at the National War Memorial in the Indian capital. — Bernama

India’s Bengal drops eggs from school lunches: Why that’s stoking debate

India’s Bengal drops eggs from school lunches: Why that’s stoking debate

Opposition politicians say the BJP is ‘imposing vegetarianism’ by removing eggs from midday meals in West Bengal.

The government of the eastern Indian state of West Bengal has decided to drop eggs from a school lunch scheme that spans all government-run schools, stirring up debate about politics and nutrition.

The government, led by Indian PM Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), has handed the contract for what is known as the midday meal programme to the Hindu religious organisation, the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON), commonly known as the Hare Krishna movement. The organisation has in turn announced a menu that strips the meals of eggs.

The Hindu majoritarian BJP, which rules nationally, came to power in West Bengal, a state of more than 100 million people, for the first time in May.

Here is what was announced, and why it has prompted debate.

What was announced?

The BJP government of West Bengal announced last week that it was handing over the food contract for the midday meal scheme to ISKCON.

ISKCON, which offers a strictly vegetarian menu – like many so-called “upper-caste” Indian Hindus, the organisation treats eggs on a par with meat – has argued that it will ensure that it serves high-quality and nutritious lunches to the nearly 12 million pupils in West Bengal who consume midday meals.

An ISKCON spokesperson – who has since been sent on enforced leave for speaking to the media – told reporters last week that while eggs are packed with protein, an equal weight of soya or cottage cheese held even more protein.

What is the midday meal and who normally supplies these lunches?

Pioneered by the southern state of Tamil Nadu in the 1960s, the midday meal became a national policy in 1995, and has since been credited by researchers for dramatically helping India raise school participation.

While India still suffers from a high dropout rate – especially among girls as they enter their teenage years – enrolment itself is now almost at 100 percent in most states.

Nationally, 120 million children eat midday meals every school day, making it the largest such programme in the world.

In 2021, the Modi government renamed the scheme to link it directly to the prime minister. It is now officially called PM Poshan – “poshan” means nutrition in Hindi – though it is still widely known as the midday meal scheme.

Traditionally, nutritionists, educationists and public health experts have advocated for serving hot, freshly prepared meals cooked locally near the schools they are meant to serve. That ensures that the food is fresh, involves the local community – which has the biggest stake in ensuring healthy meals – and encourages the use of local ingredients that students are familiar with.

In recent years, some states have allowed privately run trusts and nonprofits to also supply midday meals to some schools. ISKCON, through its nonprofit Akshaya Patra, supplies school lunches in parts of more than 10 states.

But before the West Bengal government’s decision, no major state had handed over the entire operation of the midday meal scheme to ISKCON.

Are eggs common in midday meals offered by other states?

Roughly half of the country’s states and federally governed territories offer eggs to students as part of their midday meals. These include the states of Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Odisha, Assam, Bihar, Tripura, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Mizoram and Meghalaya, and the federally governed regions of Puducherry, and Jammu and Kashmir.

Some states – like West Bengal until recently – offer eggs once a week, others more frequently, and some, like Tamil Nadu, have eggs on the menu every school day.

Apart from eggs, these states offer rice, roti, lentils and vegetables. Children who do not eat eggs have the option of opting out, while in some places – including in West Bengal until now – teachers and school administrators were allowed to raise their own funds to give meat-eating children chicken too, occasionally.

But West Bengal’s latest move makes it only the latest BJP-ruled state to try to move away from eggs.

In 2025, Maharashtra, the western state that has Mumbai as its capital, stopped funding for eggs in midday meals. Officially, schools are still allowed to find their own funds for eggs, but in practice, say experts, the decision meant depriving most students of eggs in their lunches.

Among the states that still serve eggs as part of the midday meal, a pattern exists: all southern states, and most eastern and northeastern states still have eggs on their menu. These are also the parts of the country where the BJP is either not in power or is relatively weaker than in the north and the west.

Why has the West Bengal decision stirred up debate?

While ISKCON has argued that it will supply protein alternatives to eggs, many nutritionists argue that lentils, soya, cottage cheese and other vegetarian options are no clear substitutes.

“Ideally, the choice between animal-based and plant-based protein should be left to parents,” Sandeep Shastri, a political scientist and the national coordinator of the Lokniti research network, told Al Jazeera. “This decision should rest with the parents irrespective of who is the supplier.”

Eggs, say nutritionists, are also packed with all nine essential amino acids that the body needs, in addition to protein. Until lentils, soya or cottage cheese – whose quality, quantity and levels of dilution when in the form of curries are hard to make uniform – eggs on the plates of children are easier to standardise.

Opposition politicians have accused the government of “imposing vegetarianism”.

Derek O’Brien, a leader of the All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) that the BJP defeated to come to power in West Bengal, wrote in an X post on Wednesday: “New BJP govt at work in Bengal. Throw eggs at rivals. But DEPRIVE CHILDREN of nutrition by taking eggs off from midday meals. Imposing vegetarianism. Bengal rejects this.”

Parliament members from the TMC have been pelted with eggs by protesters in West Bengal in recent months.

What are the politics of this?

In state elections in May, the BJP captured power in West Bengal for the first time in history.

Since it came to power, the BJP ordered a crackdown to trace undocumented Muslim migrants from neighbouring Bangladesh, placing them in detention centres before deporting them.

Many Indian states heavily restrict or ban the sale and consumption of beef. Ever since Modi’s government took office nationally in 2014, groups of right-wing Hindu vigilantes have lynched Muslims in several states over unproven rumours of beef consumption or cattle transport.

However, Shastri explained that India has had a long, complex debate over vegetarianism. Many Indians follow a vegetarian diet but eat eggs.

“It may be unfair to directly link Hindu nationalism to vegetarianism,” Shastri said. “There are significant variations in cuisine choice across different parts of India.”

About 70 percent of Indians consume meat, fish and eggs, at least occasionally, according to official government data from the National Family Health Survey.

Fish is also at the centre of the Bengali food culture, both in India’s West Bengal and in neighbouring Bangladesh. When opposition parties tried to paint the BJP as a force that would impose vegetarianism were it to come to power, some BJP candidates campaigned door-to-door carrying fish.

Since then, the party has netted West Bengal – and hatched a new school menu.

Stealing from the gods: India’s Ram Temple hit by corruption scandal

The temple is mired in embezzlement allegations before crucial state elections, embarrassing PM Modi's government

New Delhi, India – Brajesh Kumar climbs three floors every evening to sit in solitude on the rooftop terrace of his house overlooking the Ram Temple in Ayodhya in northern India’s Uttar Pradesh.

Over decades, the 65-year-old has seen the once-sleepy town metamorphose into the biggest flashpoint of the Hindu majoritarian movement, championed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Where the temple stands used to be the site of the 16th-century Babri Mosque, but in 1992 a Hindu mob tore it down, sparking religious riots that killed nearly 2,000 people across the country, mostly Muslims.

Two and a half years ago, Modi presided over the consecration ceremony of the new temple, devoted to the Hindu god Ram. Many Hindus believe Ram, the god worshipped as an epitome of righteousness, was born there.

To Hindu devotees like Kumar, the temple – despite the controversy and deaths that defined its birth – brought a sense of serenity.

Until recently.

For the past month, the temple has been embroiled in allegations that those entrusted with its management have instead embezzled donations worth potentially millions of dollars that the site attracted from devotees.

“We have been betrayed [by the management], who have looted our faith, nothing less,” Kumar told Al Jazeera. “Left to them, they will sell us all one day in the name of religion and stuff their own pockets.”

The allegations have led to police investigations, arrests and political fallout that could shape elections in India’s most populous state that are only months away.

Ayodhya’s can of worms

Since its inauguration, the Ram Temple has been among the top religious sites in India, attracting millions of Hindu devotees.

An independent trust, the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust, manages the shrine. Although it is outside the purview of the government, its executive members wield political influence, and some of them come from the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, the ideological wellspring of the BJP.

The corruption allegations first surfaced this month after Mahipal Singh, a former supervisor of the trust’s accounting team, publicly called out irregularities. Al Jazeera could not reach him for comment.

After a public uproar, Akhilesh Yadav, a former chief minister of Uttar Pradesh from the opposition Samajwadi Party, picked up the issue, alleging that millions of rupees in donations had gone missing.

The mounting pressure pushed the state government, ruled by the BJP, to form a three-member investigation team, which has submitted a report on the alleged misappropriation of donations.

Although the content of the report has not been made public, the state police registered a criminal case and have arrested at least eight people, including those involved in counting cash and valuable offerings at the temple.

More devotees have come forward since, seeking the whereabouts of their valuables, including silver bricks and gold jewellery and artefacts, that they had handed over to the trust’s executives.

On Friday, the trust’s longstanding general secretary, Champat Rai, stepped down with other high-profile trustees. The allegations have been particularly damning for Rai, who has been a central figure in the movement for the Ram Temple.

But it has done little to cool down the tensions in the state, where thousands of devotees, including some BJP supporters, feel cheated.

‘Cunning thieves running Ram Temple’

Santosh Dubey was among those tried for tearing down the Babri Mosque in 1992. He has never shied away from his role and instead has flaunted it.

After the mosque’s demolition, Dubey waited for a final verdict about what was to happen to the site from the courts, where both sides fought bitterly for decades. In 2019, the Supreme Court awarded the site to Hindus – even though it deemed the destruction of the mosque illegal. The top court gave a piece of land to Muslims outside Ayodhya to build a new mosque. In 2020, Dubey and others accused of roles in demolishing the mosque were acquitted — the court cited a lack of adequate evidence.

If those verdicts felt like vindication to Dubey, the alleged embezzlement at the temple has enraged him.

“This corruption causes me deep anguish, a pain that words cannot express,” Dubey told Al Jazeera, speaking from Ayodhya. “All I can say is that nothing less than the death penalty would suffice for them.”

“Cunning, dishonest and ruthless thieves are running the Ram Temple, and they have created such an atmosphere of fear that no one is willing to speak out against them,” he said.

Dubey said the government will struggle to ignore the anger among devotees because the episode batters the BJP’s narrative that it is a saviour of the Hindu faith.

This is not the first time that the temple trust has been the subject of controversy. In 2021, the trust allegedly bought land at highly inflated prices using public donations.

BJP spokespeople refused to comment on the recent allegations when Al Jazeera reached them.

‘Impact on upcoming election’

Devotees of the temple and critics of the government are accusing authorities of attempting a cover-up.

Opposition leader Yadav described the state government’s initial handling of the case as “suspicious”. “The government is arresting the counting staff while shielding the big fish who orchestrated the structural rot,” Yadav said while demanding transparency in the investigation.

Karpatri Maharaj, a prominent Hindu seer associated with the Ram Temple movement, told Al Jazeera that the government is using junior employees as scapegoats and arresting them.

Uttar Pradesh, India’s most populous state, is led by the firebrand Hindu monk-turned-politician Yogi Adityanath, who is often seen as a potential successor to Modi within the RSS-led Hindu majoritarian movement known as Hindutva.

Modi’s party lost a significant base in the state in the 2024 national elections when the BJP fell short of a majority, forcing it to rely on allies’ support to stay in power.

For the BJP, which has long used the campaign for the Ram Temple as a central political plank, the new controversy could prove a challenge before elections in Uttar Pradesh scheduled for early next year, political analyst Rasheed Kidwai said.

“It would have a massive negative impact on the BJP if more religious leaders came forward to speak on this,” Kidwai told Al Jazeera. “This is not something that would be forgotten because it is a matter of faith, and the state chief comes from a religious order himself.”

The episode carries broader lessons, he said: Pandering to religious emotions and fanning divisions can bite back. “What has been benefitting the BJP in these years can also cause immense damage,” Kidwai said.

In my days in Penang, one could go and pray at Kuan Im Teng (Kuan Im's temple, virtually the MOST sacred and beloved of Chinese temples in Penang if not Malaysia), and just used the josssticks, josspaper and votive oil (in bottles) without referring to the seller at all, and subsequently, just prior to departure, paid the vendor at the price he quoted. Once when asked how that was allowed, I explained that no one would have gone to a temple to pray while cheating the vendor on the votive offerings - what's the point of going to a temple to cheat? That'as akin to cheating the Gods!

Russia Closes Border Crossings With Several NATO States After Finland Lifts Nuclear Ban

Russia Closes Border Crossings With Several NATO States After Finland Lifts Nuclear Ban

by Tyler Durden
Thursday, Jul 02, 2026 - 12:50 AM

Finland's parliament has finally followed through with a previously threatened move to reverse its decades-long ban on nuclear weapons. The June 17 vote to lift the ban in effect legally authorizes the Nordic country to receive, transport, and facilitate the movement of nuclear weapons on its territory as part of allied operations, with the representatives' final tally at 125 to 61.

Finland officially became the 31st member of NATO in April 2023 - having abandoned its historic neutrality in the wake of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, in what was among the fastest accession processes in the Western military alliance's history. Now it is already willing to host allied nukes on its territory, making it a target of Russian retaliation.

Moscow has long warned against such an ultra-provocative move. The Kremlin said Monday that this requires a response - given also the fact that Russia and Finland share an over 800-mile long border, which is made up largely of Arctic frontier.

"The results of the vote represent both bright and unflattering victory of the blind Russophobia of the past few years over what we have always viewed as pragmatic sanity in Finland," said Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova.

via Atlantic Council

“And let nobody doubt that [response] measures will be taken timely and effectively. In this light, the Finnish people need to think whether this decision made by their elites will actually enhance security in Finland itself,” she added.

As a start, Russia has moved to shutter more rail crossings to NATO states, including Finland - which is to further severely impact trade:

Russia has closed seven railway border checkpoints with Finland, Estonia and Latvia, according to a government decree published Tuesday.

The suspension, which takes effect July 1, halts the movement of individuals, vehicles and cargo through the designated rail crossings. Five of the shuttered checkpoints are located on the Finnish border, while Estonia and Latvia each have one crossing affected.

Officials have not disclosed the reasons for the closures or when the checkpoints might reopen.

In Estonia, the Ivangorod freight and passenger crossing will remain open, and in Latvia, the Sebezh crossing will also stay open. However, the closures leave Finland with no open railway crossings with Russia, which normally exports fertilizer to Finland by rail.

Finland shut its eastern vehicle and pedestrian border crossings with Russia indefinitely in December 2023 following an influx of asylum seekers.

Since the Ukraine war began, and in context of ratcheting tensions with NATO over its military support to Kiev, Moscow has steadily militarized its border with Finland.

MUAR: A group of Bandar Sri Medan Bersatu members has publicly announced its support for Pakatan Harapan’s candidate for the Sri Medan seat in the July 11 Johor state election.

One of the members, Rosli Moin Ahmad, said he made the decision after considering the views of several former village heads and being persuaded by the federal government’s stability.

Rosli, a former Bandar Sri Medan Bersatu branch chief, stressed that his decision was not driven by disappointment with Perikatan Nasional.

“Besides, the PN candidate here is from PAS, not Bersatu,” he told FMT.

“When my supporters asked me who we should back, I told them we should support the ruling coalition.

“I am still a Bersatu member and have not left the party. I will simply vote for and support the PH candidate.”

The incumbent, Zulkurnain Kamisan of Barisan Nasional, will defend the Sri Medan seat against PH’s Hishamuddin @ Misrin Ishak and PN’s Ahmad Rosdi Bahari.

Zulkurnain retained the seat with a 6,274-vote majority in the last election.

Dismissing claims that he had been pressured or paid to support Hishamuddin, Rosli said his decision was made in the best interests of the residents.

“I was not forced or paid by anyone. I am acting in the interests of my supporters. It is up to the party if it wants to take any action against me,” he said.

According to him, the Bandar Sri Medan Bersatu branch has about 130 members.

PAS is contesting 11 seats, Bersatu 16, the Malaysian Indian People’s Party five, and Pejuang one, under the PN banner. Parti Wawasan Negara and Gerakan are skipping the polls.

While Bersatu and PAS remain coalition allies, the two parties are not assisting each other in their election campaigns.
