Akmal told: Sabah and Sarawak recognise Unified Examination Certificate

Published on: Friday, December 12, 2025

Ong (left) said the issue raised by Akmal (right) on UEC is, therefore, misleading and unnecessary.

Kota Kinabalu: Both the Liberal Democratic Party and Sabah DAP Youth hit out at Umno Youth Chief Dr Akmal Salleh for urging the Prime Minister not to recognise the Unified Examination Certificate (UEC).

They questioned the logic of the Government recognising the British-based exam systems but not the UEC which is recognised globally, including the US.

They said Akmal’s remarks ignore the actual situation in East Malaysia, where both the Sabah and Sarawak governments have already recognised UEC for admission into state public service and state institutions.

This policy has not weakened the national language or harmed unity in any way. Instead, it has broadened opportunities, retained talent and supported the inclusive character of our East Malaysian society.

LDP Vice President David Ong said the issue raised by Akmal on UEC is, therefore, misleading and unnecessary.

“His argument is incomplete and does not reflect the realities of Malaysia’s education system or our multicultural society,” he said in a statement.

“Malaysia already accepts many foreign qualifications such as A-Levels, IB and Australian Matriculation.

“To reject UEC while accepting these international certificates is inconsistent and unfair to Malaysian students who have proven their capabilities through the UEC system.”

He said the claim that recognising UEC will undermine Bahasa Malaysia is also misleading, because recognition does not replace or weaken the position of the national language, stating that many UEC students have demonstrated strong command of Bahasa Malaysia.

“A clear example can be seen in the National Malay Forum Competition, where students from Chinese independent schools – including UEC candidates – frequently excel and even emerge as national champions.

“Their achievements show that studying under the UEC system does not prevent students from mastering Bahasa Malaysia,” he said.

“Malaysia’s unity is strengthened when every community feels respected and included, not when legitimate qualifications are dismissed based on outdated assumptions.

“Malaysia must move forward with policies that are fair, rational and inclusive. We should empower our youth by recognising their abilities, maintaining our national language, and embracing the diversity that has always been our strength,” he said.

Sabah DAP Youth (DAPSY) Chief Chan Loong Wei said the UEC has produced graduates who have excelled in engineering, medicine, science, business and technology.

He dismissed claims that UEC recognition threatens Bahasa Malaysia as graduates still fulfil national language requirements and meet tertiary admission standards.

Chan noted Sabah’s progressive stance with the establishment of the State’s first RM5 million UEC Scholarship Fund under the previous administration.

Additionally, Chan pointed out that more than 1,000 universities worldwide spanning Singapore, China, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, France, the United States and Canada, recognise the UEC for direct admission, alongside over 300 private institutions in Malaysia.

He said that investing in UEC graduates would benefit Sabah’s workforce and competitiveness, particularly as the state strengthens economic ties with major partners including China and seeks high-value investments.

“Education should never be weaponised for political gain. Malaysia must prioritise nurturing talent, retaining skilled young people and building a multilingual, globally competitive workforce,” he said.

He called on national leaders to base education policy on facts rather than fear, emphasising that UEC recognition aligns with Malaysia’s existing qualification standards and reflects principles of fairness and meritocracy.

PMX is too scared of a "someone" who will jump on poor Anwar the moment PMX gives recognition to the UEC. That "someone" is PMX's greatest foe and Mr anti-UEC himself from Day 1. He will accuse PMX of being Malays' greatest traitor.

Rejecting UEC is not about being anti-Mandarin – Education expert

He stressed that recognising the UEC was considered an insult to Article 152 of the Federal Constitution, which provides for Malay as the national language

Dr Anuar Ahmad

SHAH ALAM - Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) education expert Dr Anuar Ahmad has firmly opposed proposals for the government to recognise the Unified Examination Certificate (UEC).

He stressed that recognising the UEC was considered an insult to Article 152 of the Federal Constitution, which provides for Malay as the national language.

He said the mastery of Mandarin was important, but equating the UEC with national public examinations such as the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) and the Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM) was unacceptable.

Anuar added that recognition must be rejected when pressured to place the UEC on equal footing with national examinations.

“I reject the recognition of the UEC not because I am anti-Mandarin.

“I believe Mandarin is very important to master,” he said.

Anuar, who also served as the Institute of Ethnic Studies Development and Inclusive Progress Malaysia (Minda UKM) deputy director, said recognition of the UEC would contravene the National Language Act 1963/67.

“They want to meet the Prime Minister to push for the UEC to be recognised. The whole country is in an uproar.

“People become uneasy. Some even begin attacking each other. Believe me, they are watching and enjoying it.

“Then they will go quiet, as though nothing has happened, even though their actions have already ‘hurt’ many people’s feelings.

“When needed, they will reappear. They will push again for the UEC to be recognised.

“This is what has happened since July 1959. At that time, there was a dispute between Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj and the second MCA president Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu,” he said.

He traced the issue back to 1959, highlighting the dispute between Tunku Abdul Rahman and Lim, who had pushed for the recognition of examinations from Chinese independent schools.

Anuar said MCA had even threatened to boycott the Alliance Party during the 1959 general election if recognition was not granted.

He said Umno held a special assembly and unanimously rejected the demand, insisting that Malay language must not be sidelined.

He said the boycott did occur and many Umno candidates almost lost, calling it an example of longstanding pressure surrounding the UEC debate.

Anuar emphasised that no nation committed to building a unified national identity would allow vernacular schools within its national system or fund them through public resources.

“But the Malay leaders in this country since independence have shown very high levels of tolerance, to the point where sometimes this ‘excessive’ tolerance becomes an irritation to the Malays themselves.

“You will not find a single country in this world that grants recognition to Chinese and Tamil vernacular schools, then agrees to include these schools within the national education system and subsequently allocates annual funding.

“You will not find it,” he stressed.

Attention, citizens: another national emergency has struck Malaysia, and the real victims are not those clueless people denied entry to hospitals or police stations. No, no. The true sufferers are the security guards, officers, and public servants forced to endure the traumatic, spirit-crushing sight of your knees.

Yes, you read that right. In Kajang, a woman’s Bermudas covered her knees - just not enough for the highly trained Knee Vigilance Unit. In Cyberjaya, a sleeveless dress dared to expose scandalous arms. In Melaka, a skirt displayed a suspiciously liberated amount of thigh. And in Johor? Shorts. Actual shorts. God help us all.

Shit happens. Priority please.

To all these self-proclaimed victims - how dare you? How have you survived decades in Malaysia without assembling a full emergency wardrobe approved by the Moral Fashion Council?

Sarongs? Long pants? Turtlenecks? You mean to say you left the house without ANY of these? Shame. Embarrassing, really.

Next time, keep a change of clothes in your glove compartment. Better yet, keep a portable dressing room in your boot. Because clearly, our brave public servants will stop at nothing to protect Malaysia from the violent assault of your exposed kneecaps.

Think of their suffering. Their poor eyeballs, strained from hours of involuntarily witnessing knees, ankles, and bare arms in the wild.

Imagine walking past a hospital entrance and seeing a rogue pair of knees… waving freely in the breeze. Their eyes bleed. Their sanity crumbles. Meanwhile, you’re busy crying on Facebook about being “discriminated against.”

Emergency? Forget them. Car accident? Too bad. Dying relative? Irrelevant. Shit happens, so get over it lah! Priorities, please.

Malaysian Public Service Survival Tips

Remember the first rule of Malaysian public service survival - cover up or go home.

Is this concept really so difficult to absorb through your thick skull? Even ministers wouldn’t be exempt - that’s how seriously they take knee-related threats to national stability.

And speaking of ministers… there’s a reason they’re silent on this issue. They are afraid. TERRIFIED. Your knees are too powerful. Don’t you know those pure, gentle souls in Putrajaya could have their faith shattered instantly by the sight of your sinful, uncovered patellas?

So please, the next time you want to lodge a report or visit a hospital: have some decency. Kelantan-level decency, okay, not KL-level. Bring a sarong. Carry long pants. Honestly, maybe just invest in a burqa. Full coverage. Front, back, sides.

And maybe - just maybe - we can finally be spared the national trauma of yet another news headline about knee-showing indecency. Pft.

Malaysian tower runner Soh Wai Ching has been awarded the Bintang Kecemerlangan Sukan Selangor (B.K.S.), a prestigious state honour recognizing his dominance in vertical marathon racing

Soh Wai Ching Towerrunner

Elite tower runner Soh Wai Ching has been awarded the Bintang Kecemerlangan Sukan Selangor (B.K.S.) in recognition of his outstanding achievements in the niche sport of tower running.

The honour was conferred by the Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, in conjunction with His Royal Highness’s birthday celebrations.

It follows Soh’s latest victory at the CTF Finance Center International Vertical Marathon 2025 in Guangzhou, China, which cemented his position as the world’s number one tower runner.

The B.K.S. is awarded to athletes who have represented Selangor and achieved international success over at least five years.

Recipients are limited to five individuals at any given time, with a maximum of 100 people in total.

Unlike some state honours, the B.K.S. does not confer a Datuk title, but recognises sustained sporting excellence at the highest level.

From New York to Kuala Lumpur: A Champion’s Journey

Soh’s credentials are impressive by any measure.

He currently holds the world number one ranking in tower running—a position he first achieved in April 2022.

The 31-year-old maintained the top spot throughout 2022 and 2023, and for most of 2024, losing it in November 2024 before reclaiming it a year later.

His trophy cabinet includes overall champion titles at the Asia & Oceania Tower Running Championships at Merdeka 118 in Kuala Lumpur (2025), the World Tower Running Championships in Taipei (2024), three consecutive Empire State Building Run-Up victories in New York from 2021 to 2023 and the 10th Canton Tower Run in China.

He has also dominated locally, winning four consecutive Malaysian Towerrunning National Championships from 2022 to 2025 at venues including Komtar Tower, PJ Tower, the NCT 6000ft Run Up at Genting Wyndham Ion Majestic, and KL Tower.

The Merdeka 118 victory this year holds particular significance: Soh conquered The Sky Race there in a blistering 15 minutes and 37 seconds—a record time that underscores both the building’s architectural prominence and his athletic dominance.
Building A Legacy Beyond The Podium

Soh, founder of the Malaysian Towerrunning Association (MTA), is also a Guinness World Record holder, with records set in 2020 and 2025.

His latest record, set at One Utama shopping mall, saw him achieve the Farthest Simulated Distance Climbed on a Step Climber in One Hour—a remarkable 1.788 kilometres.

Tower running – a sport that offers a fair chance for participants regardless of body size, as effective training can level the playing field – remains a relatively niche discipline compared to traditional athletics.

Still, athletes like Soh have been instrumental in raising much-needed awareness and exposure for the sport, helping to elevate its profile both locally and internationally.

KUALA LUMPUR – DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke has delivered a blunt message: he is prepared to resign immediately if stepping down would guarantee the federal government’s recognition of the Unified Examination Certificate (UEC).

Speaking on his podcast 关键陆点 (Critical Point with Loke), the Transport Minister said he had no issue giving up his post – but questioned the logic behind claims that his exit would magically resolve long-standing policy matters.

“I can lose my position anytime, no problem. But will that solve anything? If Anthony Loke stops being a minister today, will UEC be recognised tomorrow?.

“If yes, I will resign immediately. But that’s not the reality,” he said.

Loke was responding to frustration from grassroots members after DAP’s weak performance in the recent Sabah state election, where some supporters pushed for the party to sever ties with Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s unity government.

He dismissed the suggestion outright, stressing that as secretary-general, he would not entertain calls for DAP to immediately abandon the coalition.

“If we cut ties now, will we suddenly see all these reforms implemented? At least give us time – give us six months to try, to push for some changes.

“If we still can’t deliver, then we can discuss whether to remain in the unity government,” he said.

DAP has recently renewed its push for UEC recognition and is expected to formally request that the Prime Minister recognise the certificate as an independent Chinese secondary school qualification – a move that has already triggered criticism from various quarters.

During the podcast, the Seremban MP also took aim at PKR secretary-general Datuk Fuziah Salleh over her claim that Pakatan Harapan (PH) would be part of the new Sabah state government.

Loke said DAP had no knowledge of the announcement and described it as “embarrassing” and a “laughing stock”.

“PKR won only one seat in Sabah. What’s this talk about forming a state government? Government formation should be announced by the largest party – and that’s GRS chairman Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor,” he said.

He stressed that GRS, as the biggest bloc, must take the lead in seeking support from other parties before making any declaration on forming the state administration.

Despite the friction, Loke reiterated that DAP will not trigger instability before the next general election.

“DAP has 40 seats. Even if we withdraw, the government will not collapse. But the question is – if we pull out, who becomes prime minister?” he said.

While acknowledging that six months may not resolve every outstanding issue, he said voters should at least see some progress by then.

The unity government’s performance will be reviewed again in July next year if dissatisfaction persists. – December 12 , 2025

Rosmah’s great “escape”: Another nail in the coffin for Madani’s anti-corruption crusade?

Rosmah’s great “escape”: Another nail in the coffin for Madani’s anti-corruption crusade?

FORMER first lady Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor has left the building…with a very wide smile on her face.

Why? Because the prosecution has withdrawn its appeal against a High Court decision that acquitted and discharged the wife of disgraced former premier Datuk Seri Najib Razak of 12 charges of money laundering involving more than RM7 mil and five charges of failing to declare her income to the Inland Revenue Board (LHDN).

However, news of this withdrawal was greeted with less enthusiasm online, as commenters poured scorn on the Attorney General Chambers (AGC) for its apparent lack of spine in pursuing justice in this instance.

The mood on the ground, or at least in cyberspace, was largely one of anger, confusion and plain dismay at this perceived failure of the local justice system.

Many posts on social media lay the blame squarely at the door of the Madani administration for failing to live up its much-trumpeted promises of reform and to stamp out corruption.

On corruption: Under Madani zero sharks have gone to jail. Under Madani, all previously caught sharks have escaped, or delayed etc. Even those who lost cases = no difference. All. #korupsikayangan thrives under Madani. This is Anwar & DAP's "reform".

As pointed out by eKharus™ (@ekharus) on X, “under Madani zero sharks have gone to jail.” Underlining the sense of disillusionment over the current government’s war on graft, the poster declared that “#korupsikayangan thrives under Madani”, with the hashtag insinuating that corruption was still rife among the elite class.

Also on the same thread, Zmeera (@zestymeera) exemplified the fed-up citizen who has since becoming acquainted with various legal terminology such as ‘DNAA’ (dismissal not amounting toacquittal) and ‘NFA’ (no further action).

These terms have become synonymous with a ‘talk only, no action’ government with this obviously infuriated commenter declaring: “Infuriating. Has madani secured any convictions? All I see is DNAA, NFA, drop this and drop that AGC and a shiok sendiri globe-trotting kepala.”

Echoing this sentiment was e-hailing driver Alawiyah Yussof (@Alawiyah Yussof) who felt let down by this decision to not further pursue this case. Sarcastically congratulating the AGC on a job well done, she suggested “let’s do the same for other cases too.”

I want to congratulate the AGC for doing this good job, releasing the corrupts. Let's do the same for other cases too. It's BS. It's frustrating indeed. The very people we voted for, because they promised that all those corrupts will be jailed, ...is now this.

Many citizens are beginning to feel short-changed by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s reformist battle cry to stamp out corruption.

Political and social commenter FreeMalaysian (@FreeMsian) caustically observed: “Anwar Ibrahim has no shame in claiming he fights corruption while his AG let massively corrupt people free.”

Pointing out several truisms was author of Rediscovering Malaysia, Mikhail Hafiz (@IMMikhailhafz) who noted that “justice must not only be done, but also be seen to be done”.

Adding former UK PM William Gladstone’s observation that “justice delayed is justice denied” to the equation, this poster undeniably feels that the system has failed.

Each case must stand on its own merits but as the many posts on social media indicate, there is an overwhelming sense of disappointment that the AGC decided not to pursue this appeal.

Right or wrong, there is a perception that the big fish are getting away with their crimes with impunity whist the rakyat continues to shoulder the burden.

Lest it be forgotten, the Madani administration is in Putrajaya on the back of much heralded reforms, not least in combatting graft. At the moment, it looks like it is losing the war, at least in the court of public opinion. ‒ Dec 12, 2025
