Bread-and-butter issues will dominate the state election, but some parties will not resist resorting to personal attacks

PETALING JAYA: Personal attacks and mudslinging are likely to remain fixtures of the coming Johor state election campaign, with political analysts saying such tactics are simply too effective for parties to abandon.

Zaharuddin Sani Ahmad Sabri.

Ahmad Zaharuddin Sani Ahmad Sabri of Global Asia Consulting said parties remain addicted to personal attacks because they work, even though voters want substantive debates on socio-economic issues such as corruption, youth employment and the cost of living.

“These are policy issues begging for solutions. Yet, in practice, parties weaponise scandals because it is cheaper, faster, and more viral. A TikTok clip mocking a rival’s misstep can reach millions overnight, while a detailed manifesto on fiscal reform barely trends,” he told FMT.

Azmil Tayeb of Universiti Sains Malaysia said rank-and-file members would engage in personal attacks and mudslinging regardless of what party leaders say.

Azmil Tayeb.

“They (parties) have been demonising each other for a long time, and to think civility will suddenly appear is wishful thinking,” he said.

The analysts’ remarks come after Perikatan Nasional chairman Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar urged all PN component parties to run a clean campaign in Johor, avoiding provocation, hate politics and divisiveness.

Samsuri said the election was not merely a political contest but an opportunity to outline solutions to key issues such as the cost of living, unemployment and administrative integrity.

The Johor state assembly was dissolved on June 1, paving the way for elections within 60 days.

With the state becoming a leading destination for foreign investment, and a key gateway for trade with Singapore, contesting parties would find it difficult to sidestep economic and bread-and-butter issues, said Azmi Hassan of Akademi Nusantara.

He said parties were likely to campaign on the state’s economic and infrastructure development. More localised grievances, such as congestion on the Causeway, could also feature on the campaign trail, he said.

Azmi Hassan.

“I think it’s good that Johor is the first state election before the general election, because it could pave the way on how campaigns should be conducted,” Azmi told FMT.

Azmil said the rising cost of living would dominate the campaign, with Barisan Nasional expected to highlight the state government’s track record in managing such pressures.

He also predicted familiar distancing tactics between state and federal campaigns. “Parties will say that Johor politics is unique and not comparable to other states, particularly in how they take care of their people,” he said, noting that it would echo a pattern seen in the Sabah election last November,

Noh Omar returns to Umno, drawn by anti-DAP stance

The former federal minister said the stance of Johor Umno and BN of not working with DAP persuaded him to rejoin the party

Former Umno Supreme Council member Noh Omar said if Umno and PAS joined forces, they could form a government without the help of other parties.

PETALING JAYA: Former federal minister and former Selangor Umno chief Noh Omar said he has returned to Umno’s fold, more than three years after the party sacked him.

The former Umno Supreme Council member said he rejoined the party under its Rumah Bangsa initiative, which opens its doors to anyone wishing to return to or join the party, Sinar Harian reported.

Noh said the principles upheld by Johor Umno and Barisan Nasional of namely not working with DAP had persuaded him to rejoin the party.

“I am confident, God willing, that in the next general election, Umno would hold on to the very same principle,” he was quoted as saying.

In March, Noh expressed his willingness to return to the party under the proposed Rumah Bangsa initiative, provided the party ended its cooperation with DAP.

Noh was sacked from Umno following a violation of party discipline during the 15th general election. In July 2024, he confirmed that he had joined Bersatu, and was appointed to the Bersatu Supreme Council in early 2025.

He resigned from the post last month following the sacking of 17 party leaders, including Hamzah Zainudin.

Tonight, Noh revealed that he decided to quit Bersatu as the party had ignored the principles and decisions of its Supreme Council.

He hoped that Umno would re-establish its alliance with PAS to unite the Malays in the country. “I believe that if Umno and PAS join forces, they can form the government without the help of other parties,” he said.

Political commentator Tajuddin Rasdi says the Johor BN chief's stand contradicts Islamic principles to uphold the dignity of all men

PETALING JAYA: A political commentator has accused Johor Barisan Nasional chief Onn Hafiz Ghazi of displaying a racist personality after he declared he would rather forgo the menteri besar’s post than work with DAP.

In a post on social media, Tajuddin Rasdi said Onn Hafiz should emulate the behaviour of the country’s first prime minister, Tunku Abdul Rahman, who was willing to sit down face-to-face with Malayan communist leader Chin Peng for the Baling peace talks in 1955.

Tajuddin said Onn Hafiz should be reminded that his stand contradicts Islamic principles to uphold the dignity of all men.

“As a politician, how can he govern a state when tens of thousands of Malays, Chinese, Indians and people of various other ethnic groups support DAP?” said Tajuddin.

Earlier today, Onn Hafiz declared he would exclude DAP from the state government lineup should BN be voted back into government. “I would rather not hold the position of menteri besar or sit at the same table with them,” he was reported as saying.

Shielded by Israeli impunity from the law, illegal West Bank shailok settlers harass rural Palestinian communities continuously

Palestinian farmers ‘steal’ their own crops as settler violence surges across occupied West Bank

AS SAWIYAH (Palestinian Territories), June 7 — With pitchforks and a makeshift combine the size of a golf cart, Hamad Jazi and his nephews race under the blazing sun to collect wheat from their West Bank field.

Israeli settlers have recently set fire to crops in the area, and Jazi fears his wheat could suffer a similar fate.

Their village of As-Sawiyah, in the centre of the occupied West Bank, sits in a valley dominated by hills on top of which three settlements stand.

“The settlers have set fires twice already — yesterday and the day before,” Jazi told AFP.

“If you think back 10, 15 or 20 years ago, this season used to be a season of abundance. Today, you are racing against time just to harvest quickly and leave,” he added.

Excluding east Jerusalem, more than 500,000 Israelis live in the occupied West Bank in settlements that are illegal under international law, among some three million Palestinians.

Israel has occupied the West Bank since 1967.

Shielded by what rights groups describe as impunity from the law, some settlers have harassed rural Palestinian communities, vandalising property and crops, committing arson and sometimes killing.

By all metrics, 2026 has been one of the most violent years to date, with an average of six attacks per day, according to data from UN humanitarian agency OCHA.

The surge in violence goes hand in hand with the proliferation of settlements in the West Bank, which part of the Israeli political class is threatening to annex.

Settlers in rural areas vandalise property and start fires, at times sowing terror in villages, as shown in videos posted on social media, sometimes by the perpetrators themselves.

The attacks have sparked criticism inside Israel, where the opposition accuses Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government and his far-right allies of turning a blind eye to acts of settler violence.

According to Mahmud Fatafta of the Palestinian Authority’s agriculture ministry, settlers killed or stole 8,000 goats or sheep in the West Bank in 2026.

According to his ministry’s data, 41,000 olive trees, a crop as emblematic to Palestinians as it is ubiquitous in the West Bank’s rocky hills, were damaged by settlers or Israel’s military in 2026.

‘Steal our own crops’

“In the past, when we went out into the fields, the olive harvest was a celebration, the grain harvest was a celebration,” Jazi, his face worn by the sun, told AFP.

Now, “we live those moments like thieves. We go and ‘steal’ our own olives or our own crops”, he said, complaining that the Israeli military requires him to coordinate with it before entering his fields.

Hikmat Abu Ras, head of As-Sawiya’s village council, told AFP that his and neighbouring communities have faced near daily attacks from settlers since the start of the war in Gaza in October 2023.

“They constantly carry out these practices in order to drive us off our land and prevent us from entering it,” he said.

Abu Ras lamented increasing movement restrictions that further isolate communities like his.

“Gates block the entrances to villages, camps, and cities. Movement is restricted. You race against time just to make sure the settler does not come and seize what is on your land.” — AFP

KUALA LUMPUR, June 8 — Parti Bersama Malaysia (Bersama) expects to announce its candidates and the seats it will contest in the Melaka state election as early as August, as it steps up preparations for what is expected to be the next round of polls after Johor and Negeri Sembilan.

Party president Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli said Bersama would need about another month to gauge voter sentiment before finalising the number of constituencies it intends to contest.

“By early August, we should have a clearer picture of the number of seats and constituencies we will contest in Melaka.

“Bersama’s advantage as a multiracial party that has chosen to go solo is that it can contest in any constituency without being constrained by any party’s traditional seats,” he told Utusan Malaysia after the second leg of the Jelajah Kancil tour at a hotel in Ayer Keroh last night.

While much of the party’s attention is currently focused on Johor and Negeri Sembilan following the dissolution of their state assemblies, Rafizi said efforts to identify potential constituencies in Melaka were also under way.

He described the response to Bersama in Melaka as encouraging despite the state’s relatively small population compared with larger states.

According to Rafizi, Selangor currently records the highest number of party registrations, followed by the Federal Territories, Johor and Sabah, while Melaka ranks seventh in terms of membership.

“Melaka is a smaller state, so the larger registration numbers are naturally in states such as Selangor, the Federal Territories, Johor and Sabah. I believe Melaka is seventh in terms of membership,” he said, as reported by the national daily.

Rafizi, however, argued that membership figures alone did not reflect a party’s strength, saying the commitment and activism of supporters were equally important.

He said programmes organised by Bersama in Melaka had shown growing public interest in the party, adding that the response had been more encouraging than what he experienced during the early stages of building previous political movements.

The party expects that momentum to build as the election approaches and believes it can offer voters in Melaka an alternative political choice, he added.

KANSAS CITY, June 8 — Nine people sustained non-life-threatening injuries in a shooting near England’s World Cup base camp in Kansas City, Missouri, on Saturday, days before the tournament is due to kick off.

Kansas City police said there were no suspects in custody and that at least three of the shooting victims were transported to local hospitals.

The incident occurred roughly four miles from where England are set to train at the Swope Soccer Village. England have not arrived in Kansas City and are due to play a friendly against Costa Rica in Orlando, Florida, on Wednesday.

A spokesperson for the FA declined to comment.

ALOR SETAR, June 8 — Police reminded members of the public to not speculate about the incident that claimed the lives of six family members during a tragic accident in Pinang Tunggal, near Sungai Petani, yesterday.

Kedah Police Chief Datuk Adzli Abu Shah requested that the public give space to the police to conduct a full investigation to determine the actual cause of the incident, which is believed to have occurred around 3.50pm, involving a sport utility vehicle (SUV) and a lorry carrying soil.

“The SUV, carrying seven family members including a police officer, was heading towards Sungai Petani on their way to Merbok to visit the graves of other family members, while the lorry, driven by a 49-year-old local man, was heading towards Tikam Batu.

“The accident caused six of the family members to lose their lives, while another three-year-old girl sustained severe injuries to her face,” he told reporters at the Forensic Department of Hospital Sultanah Bahiyah here tonight.

He said that the accident, which quickly went viral on social media, has led to a lot of irresponsible speculation, including members of the public privately sending him WhatsApp messages containing false information.

“Some people told me that the lorry driver was drunk and also brought up the driver’s race... here, I would like to inform that the victims are Malay and the lorry driver is also a Malay, so such actions are highly irresponsible.

“Preliminary investigations also revealed that the lorry was being driven at only 60 kilometres per hour (km/h), but there are also parties saying that the vehicle (X50) might have had issues because it was just recently delivered, as it is still a new car, so we will investigate all aspects including sending the SUV to the Computerised Vehicle Inspection Centre (Puspakom) for further inspection,” he said.

In the meantime, Adzli said the lorry driver’s urine screening turned out negative; however, he does have a record of seven prior summons.

“Even though he was driving within the speed limit of 60 km/h and possesses a valid driving license, the driver has been detained and will be remanded tomorrow to assist in the investigation of the case. The case is being investigated under Section 4(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987,” he said.

The six who died in the tragic accident were identified as: Ahmad Syafiq Ahmad Shukri, 29, Ahmad Fahim Ahmad Shukri, 21, Jamaliah Sannusi, 29, Nora Mohd Husin, 55, Iskandar Affan Ibrahim, 7 and Ahmad Mikail Ahmad Syafiq, 2 months, while the injured victim is Aulia Sofea Ahmad Syafiq, 3.

It is understood that all the victims were on their way to Merbok from Kepala Batas, Penang. — Bernama

KUALA LUMPUR, June 8 — Residents along Sabah’s east coast were urged to stay away from beaches and comply with any evacuation orders today after a powerful earthquake near Mindanao triggered tsunami warnings across several coastal districts, with authorities forecasting waves of up to 0.4 metres.

Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Minister Datuk Seri Arthur Joseph Kurup said tsunami warning sirens had been activated in Tawau, Semporna, Kunak and Lahad Datu as a precaution following the magnitude 7.9 earthquake that struck southern Philippines at 7.37am.

“I would like to strongly emphasise to the public, especially residents in coastal areas around Tawau, Semporna, Kunak and Lahad Datu, to remain calm and not panic,” he said in a statement today.

Kurup said the government, through the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) and other relevant agencies, was closely monitoring the situation.

He added that residents should “immediately comply with any evacuation or safety instructions issued by local authorities” and avoid coastal areas during the warning period.

MetMalaysia said the earthquake struck at a depth of 50km, with its epicentre located about 97km south of Koronadal City in the Philippines.

Tremors were reported in parts of Tawau and Semporna.

KUALA LUMPUR, June 8 — Malaysian authorities issued a tsunami advisory for parts of Sabah’s east coast today after a powerful earthquake struck near Mindanao in the southern Philippines, with tremors felt across parts of the state.

Malaysia’s Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) said the earthquake occurred at 7.37am with a magnitude of 7.9 and a depth of 50km.

The epicentre was located at coordinates 5.7° North and 125.1° East, about 97km south of Koronadal City in the Philippines and approximately 747km east of Semporna, Sabah.

Tremors were reported in Tawau, Semporna and surrounding areas shortly after the quake.

MetMalaysia warned that tsunami waves could affect coastal areas in Tawau, Semporna, Kunak and Lahad Datu between 10.30am and noon.

Residents in the affected areas were advised to stay away from beaches and follow instructions issued by local authorities.

The earthquake prompted tsunami warnings in the Philippines and neighbouring Indonesia, while the US Tsunami Warning System also issued a tsunami threat notification.

International monitoring agencies reported varying preliminary measurements of the earthquake.

The German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) initially estimated the quake at magnitude 7.3 before revising it upwards to 8.2, while other agencies reported a magnitude of 7.8. GFZ said the earthquake occurred at a depth of 10km.

Philippine authorities said aftershocks were still being felt and authorities were assessing reports of damage and casualties.

Mindanao and the wider Philippine archipelago sit along the Pacific Ring of Fire, one of the world’s most seismically active zones, where earthquakes and volcanic eruptions occur frequently.

MetMalaysia said it was continuing to monitor developments and would issue further updates as more information became available.

Why despite multiple political parties, “Chinese rally behind unified causes unlike Malays”

Why despite multiple political parties, “Chinese rally behind unified causes unlike Malays”

“MALAY UNITY” is a phrase that has been bandied about a lot lately. It’s become an inescapable theme as certain political parties up the ante with impending polls looming.

However, not everyone is so enamoured with this constant brow beating by nationalists claiming that Malay rights and identity are under threat.

One such individual is Amanah’s former Shariah affairs director Zolkharnain Abidin Al-Abyadhi who postulated what can be termed an unpopular opinion in a recent Facebook post.

It was contended that one almost never hear such rhetoric about “Chinese unity” whether it is in the sphere of politics, business or religion.

“The Chinese join different political parties. The difference is that they don’t just talk but produce results,” claimed the former one-term state assemblyman of Santan in Perlis (1999 to 2004) in a recent Facebook post.

PENYATUAN MELAYU

Jarang kita dengar orang Cina bercakap soal penyatuan Cina secara terbuka. Tak kiralah penyatuan dalam politik, bisnes atau apa saja.

“Malays’ problems are not because there are so many Malay parties. Chinese parties are plentiful too. Even if you want to claim division because of groups, the Chinese have more groups than the Malays.

“But the Chinese doesn’t talk much about Chinese unity. Why? Because for Chinese, unification is not just about talking but about agreeing to build success together,” he passionately argued.

Chinese are practical-minded

Doubling down on this unpopular opinion, the Amanah politician criticised the Malays for lacking the necessary gumption to emulate the Chinese.

Instead of working towards a common goal, the nationalist Malays add a religious element to the equation by claiming that Islam is under threat if the Malays do not unite.

Moreover, the former PAS man pointed out that the Chinese do not resort to petty threats or ostracisation when people disagree or do not align with one set of values or views. The important thing was the end result.

He thus observed:

“You don’t hear of Chinese saying ‘who doesn’t support our party, then the Chinese will be out of their religion or prohibited to study in Chinese schools or forbidden to enter Chinese temples’.

“Malays don’t have the mentality to compete in a healthy way. Malays don’t have the mentality of taking advantage of differences to learn new things and move forward.

“Take a look at the Chinese. They are persistent, don’t blame other races, be quick to seize advantage of opportunities and be good at agreeing with differences.

“However, Malays are a bit different. Those with differing opinions are viewed as “less Malay” or “anti-Islam.

“Malays don’t have the mentality to compete in a healthy way. Malays don’t have the mentality of taking advantage of differences to learn new things and move forward,” was the 59-year-old Islamic scholar’s observation.

“Take a look at the Chinese. They are persistent, don’t blame other races, quick to take advantage of differences and are good at co-operating despite differences”.

This led Zolkharnain to make the following damning conclusion: “If you ask me, why Malays behave like that, my answer is that Malays are addicted to religion!”

His FB’s post has generated 1.6K likes, 511 comments and 215 shares at time of publication. Unsurprisingly, it has sparked a lively debate.

‘Apple-orange comparison’

One commenter urged the poster to avoid using the Chinese as a yardstick as it only heightens the tensions by making them “the enemy” and thereby “a target by extremist groups”.

This unease was shared by a few other commenters who also felt that it was unhelpful to be comparing the two races. Some felt it was an attempt to further drive a wedge between the races.

Some felt it was comparing “apples and oranges” and perhaps it would be better to focus on one’s own strengths.

“This is all the DAP’s fault.” One commenter brought up the usual bogeyman used to scare off Malay voters.

This obviously fed-up netizen argued that no matter the issue, it seems that DAP was always at fault. It was said the Chinese were too busy trying to earn a living than to engage in such political warring that sought to fan the flames of hate.

“The Chinese only help their own kind.” It was claimed that this was another oft-heard excuse for the need for “Malay unity”. This commenter succinctly asked if Malay politicians were really helping the Malay community?

One pious observer tried to argue that progress cannot be isolated from religious values. His contention is that liberal and secular ideas and practices cannot be normalised as this will lead to the decay of society, henceforth the floods in Selangor and Kuala Lumpur were the result of vice activities.

This brought a stinging rebuke labelling “backward thinking” that faulted one’s own weaknesses on Westernisation and liberal values.

It would seem there are enough commenters who agree with the poster and feel that it is old hat to be using ‘Malay unity’ as a political tool.

One commenter is puzzled why the Chinese who seldom raise racial issues at religious, social or even political events are still labelled as “racist.”

Perhaps best summing up the mood was one comment that highlighted the main difference – “The Chinese would unite for progress. The Malays unite to create disharmony”. – July 7, 2026

Kedah pushes legal challenge after Court of Appeal rules against gambling licence freeze

Kedah wants to impose a blanket ban on lottery and betting businesses, but the Court of Appeal has said the state government cannot do so solely on policy objections to gambling. — Picture by Sayuti Zanudin

ALOR SETAR, June 7 — Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor is not giving up the state’s decision to stop issuing and renewing number-betting outlet licences, despite losing the case at the Court of Appeal.

He said the state will pursue the legal battle all the way to the Federal Court, The Star reported today.

“We are not giving up and will bring this case to the highest court. We have already started the process to go to the Federal Court,” he was quoted as saying.

Sanusi said the state had anticipated the outcome, although the full written judgment was only recently released.

On June 2, the Court of Appeal released its written grounds for a December ruling that Kedah could not impose a blanket ban on lottery and betting businesses solely on policy objections to gambling.

The majority decision held that state powers were confined to matters under the Federal Constitution’s Ninth Schedule and the Local Government Act.

The court said licensing decisions must be tied to premises conditions such as safety, sanitation and public nuisance, not general opposition to gambling activities.

It also noted that some operators had been operating at the same premises for decades.

The Federal Court is scheduled to hear Kedah’s application for leave to appeal on August 12.

Kedah’s dispute began after Sanusi announced in November 2021 that the state would stop issuing and renewing gambling outlet licences.

The decision was challenged by gambling and lottery operators, leading to a 2024 High Court ruling that the ban was unlawful, which was later upheld by the Court of Appeal in December 2025.
