1960 - US chose to escalate hostilities with USSR

From the FB page of:

In 1956, the CIA came up with what they thought was a rather clever plan.
The agency wanted to conduct a major spying operation on the Soviet Union.
But sending a military plane into someone else’s country would be an act of war.
So the agency decided to send a spy plane high above the clouds—to a height of 21 kilometers above the ground.
Their special high-altitude plane, called a U-2, would simply be too far up to be spotted by Russian radar.
They decided to try it.
On the fourth of July that year, 1956, a CIA pilot took a plane illegally into Soviet airspace. It flew over Moscow and St. Petersburg, had a look round, and then went home, unmolested. Mission accomplished.
They repeated this many times over the following years.
.
AGENT POWERS’ PROBLEM
On May 1, 1960, a CIA pilot found himself with a long-haul job to do. Francis Gary Powers was an agent whose cover story, even to his own family, had been that he was a NASA meteorologist studying the weather.
The “weatherman” had to fly from a US military base in Pakistan to another one in Norway – even then, the world was covered with hubs for US armed forces.
He was flying a U-2, so believed he could fly over the Soviet Union. He’d be travelling across 4,667 kilometers (2,900 miles) of Soviet airspace.
This was both illegal and an act of war, but the US had long decided that international law did not apply to them.
The CIA plane was promptly shot down by a Soviet surface-to-air missile in the Ural Mountains of Russia.
.
INTERNATIONAL INCIDENT
When the Russians complained that they had had to shoot down a US aircraft which was very clearly well inside their territory, the US government spun a tale that the U-2 had been conducting a routine weather flight outside Soviet airspace.
But there had been a malfunction of the oxygen delivery system in the cabin, they said. The weatherman blacked out and the plane had – entirely accidentally – drifted over into Soviet air space.
And that’s when the Russians had blown it up.
Whole thing was a mistake.
.
TRUTH COMES OUT
The Russians considered this—and then sent a reply which shocked the US leadership. The Soviets said they were in possession of both the pilot and the remains of the plane.
Gary Powers had clearly not blacked out—he had parachuted to land, and was alive and well.
And the damaged aircraft, which was fitted for spying, not monitoring the weather, had been recovered too.
The Russians had been watching the spy plane program all along, for years—and had missiles that could bring down the CIA aircraft.
This was deeply embarrassing to the US, since its CIA program was exposed, and it had been caught lying to the world.
.
OPPORTUNITY FOR PEACE
But Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev wanted peace. He suggested that the United States could simply apologize and pledge to make no further illegal incursions.
Furthermore, he said that if U.S. President Dwight Eisenhower denied any knowledge of the spy planes program, he would accept that.
But Eisenhower did not like being caught in a lie—and turned even more hostile. He responded that he personally knew full well about the illegal spy plane incursions from day one.
Furthermore, he considered that flying into Soviet airspace was a necessary element in maintaining the US’s national defense—and CIA pilots would continue to violate Soviet airspace whenever they liked.
East-west relations crashed.
This was one of a number of incidents in which Russia clearly tried to turn a bad incident into an opportunity to make a positive agreement, but the US chose to escalate hostilities instead.
By 1960, the US military-media-industrial complex was already taking control of the nation.

Full details of the U-2 spy plane incident are in the archives of the US Office of the Historian. Link provided separately.

PKR vice-president Dr Zaliha Mustafa says those contesting under Bersama made their own choice to leave the party

PKR vice-president Dr Zaliha Mustafa said support from party members and the public remains strong.

JOHOR BAHRU: PKR is unfazed by the decision of several former party members to contest under Parti Bersama Malaysia in the Johor state election, expressing confidence that it will retain voter support.

PKR vice-president Dr Zaliha Mustafa said support from party members and the public remained strong.

“It was their choice to leave PKR and contest under Bersama.

“But from what we have seen throughout today’s nomination process in almost all 20 constituencies, the support from our party members and the public has been very encouraging,” she told reporters at PKR’s operations room here.

Among Bersama’s candidates with previous links to PKR are former PKR candidate Dr Zamil Najwah (Permas), as well as Norsinah Abu (Larkin) and Stanley Tan (Stulang). Bersama’s Puteri Wangsa candidate, Nicholas Paul Vincent, has also been alleged to be a former PKR member.

Regarding voter turnout, Zaliha said PKR had begun campaigning to encourage Johoreans living outside the state to return home to vote.

“We are also reaching out to young people and parents in rural areas, urging them to call their children home to vote,” she said.

Rightist Akmal hit out at Nga Kor Ming who accuses him of being “instigator of racism”

Rightist Akmal hit out at Nga Kor Ming who accuses him of being “instigator of racism”

UMNO Youth chief Datuk Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh has seemingly rekindled his political animosity with National DAP deputy chairman Nga Kor Ming after the latter allegedly labelled the staunch defender of race and religion as “being instrumental in breaking up a multi-racial society”.

This came about as the Housing and Local Government Minister was featured in a Chinese-language video reminding the public “not to allow Akmal to further damage Malaysia’s multi-racial society, spark racial conflict and divide the country’s plural society”.

In his defence, the Merlimau state assemblyman claimed that his actions were not racially motivated but rather aimed at defending the Malaysian flag and the ALLAH inscription (in his March 2024 nationwide boycott call off KK Super Mart).

According to him, the quarters accused of racial division actually consists of individuals who live in Malaysia but still do not understand the Federal Constitution and sensitive matters that need to be respected.

“Kor Ming claimed that I was instrumental in dividing the races and incited racism. I want to ask Kor Ming and all DAP folks since when opposing DAP means we’re up against the Chinese?” the Melaka state Rural Development, Agriculture, and Food Security Committee chairman countered on his social media accounts.

Since when does opposing DAP mean we are inciting racism? We’re opposing DAP because of DAP’s foolishness.

“Policies drawn up by DAP fail to take into account the sensitivity of the majority race in this country. I defended the Malaysian flag and the ALLAH inscription. I didn’t even touch the Chinese as a race at all.

Interestingly, the entire episode was sparked by a so-called a tip-off by Reformati Studio “Albert Tei”, the social media site of Datuk Albert Tei Jiann Cheing, the whistle blower in the centre of the high-profiles Sabah mining scandal.

“Big exposure … Please share and tag UMNO Youth chief Akmal Saleh … watch this video for what is mentioned by the DAP leader Nga Kor Ming in Mandarin which I’ve translated into Bahasa Melayu,” jibed the controversial businessman who is currently a vocal critic of the Madani government.

“Such is DAP’s attitude … instigate the Chinese community in Mandarin especially when elections are round the corner so you guys are caught unaware … Isn’t this (tactic) notorious and dangerous?”

For the record, Akmal was at odds with Nga on May 9 after the latter claimed that the proposed appointment of up to five unelected state assemblymen in the Johor state assembly was inconsistent and hypocritical.

The Russia-trained medical doctor said the Teluk Intan MP’s stance was also seen to be related to political interests ahead of the Johor state polls (July 11).

“I want to ask, why don’t you agree now? Previously, when Pakatan Harapan (PH) did likewise in Pahang you agreed and accepted the motion,” reported Utusan Malaysia.

“You, too, agreed on the appointment of PH’s unelected assemblymen in Sabah even though DAP didn’t win a single seat in the Sabah state polls.”

Nga who is a trained lawyer had earlier claimed that the decision of the Johor State Assembly to approve the Bill regarding the proposal to create five appointed assemblyman positions was against the Federal Constitution.

He went to say that PH would hold a campaign to collect signatures from Johorians in the near future to protest such proposal (which has since been passed). – June 27, 2026

Viral post suggest internal plot to push Hadi Awang’s son up as Terengganu MB

A VIRAL social media post by a PAS supporter has sparked controversy by claiming an organised internal plot exists to position PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang’s son as the future Terengganu Menteri Besar (MB).

The whistleblower alleges that recent high-profile appointments – including naming the son as Terengganu PAS deputy commissioner, central PAS information chief, and a member of the powerful Ulama Syura Council – are strategic moves to anchor the president’s office’s dominance.

The individual also claims that the appointment of the PAS president’s son as the Deputy Commissioner of Terengganu PAS is seen as part of a “strategic step” to strengthen the influence of a certain faction within the party.

While the whistleblower claims senior leaders oppose this trajectory, no concrete evidence was provided.

PAS leadership has not issued an official response, and Terengganu remains under the administration of current Chief Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar. The claim was made through a social media post that has gone viral since yesterday (June 26), which also questions several appointment decisions within the PAS leadership recently.

He also claims several figures in the state leadership are said to have been “weakened”.

“Therefore, if the next election takes place, the Terengganu Chief Minister’s Office will have been controlled from the start,” he said.

There are figures within the Syura Council and the old leadership of the party who did not agree with the said appointment, but their views are said to no longer be given attention.

“Why do I dare to speak out? Because the madness that is happening requires courage to fix it,” he added. — June 27, 2026

PAS boycotts Bersatu campaigns as PN rift deepens in Johor polls

PAS boycotts Bersatu campaigns as PN rift deepens in Johor polls

PAS HAS officially ordered its election machinery to boycott campaigns in all Johor state constituencies contested by its Perikatan Nasional (PN) ally Bersatu.

PAS Information Chief Ahmad Fadhli Shaari clarified that party workers will instead focus strictly on seats contested by PAS and other PN components.

This follows PAS President Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang’s confirmation that political cooperation with Bersatu has been terminated.

For the upcoming July 11 polls, PAS has scaled down its campaign to 11 strategic seats, targeting a role as an opposition watchdog and state government adviser.

Meanwhile, Bersatu President Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin stated that his party is not disheartened by PAS’s decision to withhold campaign assistance for Bersatu candidates in the 16th Johor state election.

Speaking after the Bukit Kepong nomination process, Muhyiddin expressed an open attitude toward the boycott. While acknowledging that Perikatan Nasional (PN) components should ideally champion a spirit of mutual aid, he emphasised that Bersatu will not force any ally’s support.

He noted that Bersatu remains highly focused on leveraging its own internal strength and track record, expressing complete confidence that voters know how to choose wisely. — June 27, 2026

Maszlee emerges favourite as Puteri Wangsa five-cornered contest sparks online debate

Maszlee emerges favourite as Puteri Wangsa five-cornered contest sparks online debate

THE Puteri Wangsa state seat will witness a five-cornered fight in the 16th Johor state election, with Pakatan Harapan (PH) candidate Dr Maszlee Malik stealing the limelight.

Returning officer Zulkurnain Abdul Rahman confirmed the other four official candidates as Teow Chia Ling (Barisan Nasional), Rashifa Aljunied (Muda), Nicholas Paul Vincent (Parti Bersama Malaysia), and independent Wang Wee Siong.

On social media, the views are that Maszlee will win this seat, which is a Malay-majority constituency.

With Barisan Nasional fielding a non-Malay candidate, the mood online is that the PH candidate may have a better chance with Malay voters.

As Johor’s second-largest constituency with 128,723 voters – heavily driven by youth aged 18 to 29 – the seat was previously won by Muda’s Amira Aisya in 2022.

Following the assembly’s dissolution on June 1, a two-week campaign period will now lead up to early voting on July 7 and polling day on July 11.

User Khairul Fikri said this area is of mixed racial composition, and this is probably why PH has Dr Maszlee as a candidate.

Some users are teasing the PH candidate for past mistakes, such as the black shoe incident during his role as education minister under the Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad administration from 2018 to 2020.

Others are saying he called for the end of toll roads or that he was involved in other incidents, questioning why PH chose him as a candidate.

But overall, the mood is right for Maszlee as the debate turns into a religious affair.

For Luqman Al Hakim HN, the most important thing in the lineup is that the candidate is Muslim. If not Maszlee, then vote for Rashifa Al Junied.

Another user showed their preference for Bersama.

User Rashid Rashid said the Chinese voters in this seat are strongly in support of PH and if the Chinese community thinks of BN, they see UMNO Youth chief Datuk Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh. — June 27, 2026

PETALING JAYA: A premises at Pusat Perdagangan Lagoon Perdana here was raided on Thursday in a joint enforcement operation led by the Selangor Islamic religious department (Jais) for suspected hosting of Shia activities.

The Islamic authority raided the premises following a tip-off.

It was assisted by the police, fire and rescue department, immigration department, Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission, and Subang Jaya city council (MBSJ).

One hundred and twenty personnel were involved in the raid.

During the operation, authorities found 226 individuals at the premises – 147 men, 51 women and 28 children. All of them are foreign nationals from Pakistan, India and Bangladesh.

Jais said it took action under the Shariah Criminal Offences (Selangor) Enactment 1995 for various offences, including insulting religious authorities, and disseminating opinions and publications that contravene fatwas and Islamic law.

Meanwhile, MBSJ issued a notice against the premises for non-compliance that included modifying the premises without approval from local authorities. The owner was given 14 days to comply with the requirements of the notice.

Jais urged members of the public with any information on Shia teachings to channel it to the department’s hotline at 1800-88-2424 so that appropriate action can be taken.

It advised Muslims not to be involved in any activities related to such teachings.

The BN chairman says that any talks between the parties, if they had taken place, were likely held among the lower ranks of the parties

PETALING JAYA: Barisan Nasional chairman Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has played down allegations of cooperation with PAS and Parti Wawasan Negara in the Johor state election.

Zahid said any talks among the parties for working together, if they had taken place, were likely held among their lower ranks, Berita Harian reported.

“I have not heard anything about that (BN’s plans to cooperate with PAS and Wawasan).

“It may have been discussions held at the grassroots level,” he told reporters after a programme with the Benut BN election machinery in Simpang Renggam today.

He also pointed out that BN had already announced candidates for all 56 state seats.

“From the very beginning, (Johor BN chairman) Onn Hafiz Ghazi made it clear that we would contest on our own. That has been proven by the fact that BN is fielding candidates in all 56 state constituencies.

“None of our candidates is contesting under another party’s logo,” he said.

On Thursday, Wawasan president Hamzah Zainudin said his party would not field candidates in the state election.

However, he said, this did not mean the party would not support other candidates.

He said Wawasan would announce the names of “certain candidates” it would back after the Perikatan Nasional Supreme Council meets in the near future.

Hamzah also said the party would contest the Negeri Sembilan state election.

PAS has fielded a total of 11 candidates in the Johor polls and instructed its machinery to assist its own candidates and those of other PN component parties, except for Bersatu.

Bersatu has fielded 16 candidates contesting under the PN banner.

The other PN component parties contesting in the election are the Malaysian Indian People’s Party (MIPP), which is fielding candidates in five seats, and Pejuang, which is contesting one seat.

Earlier today, former DAP assemblyman Chew Chong Sin claimed there is a “tacit understanding” between BN and PN based on the 33 candidates PN fielded for the polls.

PETALING JAYA: A former DAP assemblyman has called for voters to come out in full force in the Johor state election to prevent Barisan Nasional and Perikatan Nasional from forming the next state government.

Chew Chong Sin claims there is a “tacit understanding” between the two coalitions based on the 33 candidates PN fielded today, China Press reported.

The Johor state polls on July 11 will see 56 seats up for grabs, with 29 needed for a simple majority.

“Parti Wawasan Negara’s decision to sit out the Johor polls will allow BN’s candidates from MCA to secure the non-Malay votes,” he was quoted as saying.

To prevent PN and BN from winning a seat, he said, a voter turnout of 65% to 75% was needed, ensuring that a Pakatan Harapan candidate can win instead.

Chew, a two-term Mengkibol assemblyman, said if a unity government comprising BN and PN representatives was formed, it could lead to conservative policies being implemented that could impact the lives of Johor residents.

“I urge voters in Johor to vote enthusiastically to uphold democratic reform and economic development,” he said.

BN has fielded candidates in all the 56 state seats.

On Wednesday, Johor BN chief Onn Hafiz Ghazi ruled out forming a coalition government with any other party after the election.

Separately, DAP deputy chairman Nga Kor Ming alleged that PN’s decision not to contest the Yong Peng seat meant the coalition was making way for BN in the area, Oriental Daily reported.

Nga said PN has no intention of governing Johor, yet it is prepared to take part in forming the state government.

He said the covert political manoeuvring between PN and BN is obvious.

“Onn Hafiz has repeatedly stated that he will not cooperate with DAP, but has not explicitly ruled out the possibility of working with PN,” he told reporters after an event in Yong Peng today.

The Yong Peng seat was won by BN’s Ling Tiang Soon in the 2022 state election. Ling will defend the seat against PH candidate Yong Hui Yi in a straight fight.

JOHOR BAHRU, June 27 — Several high-profile contests are set to dominate the campaign for the 16th Johor state election, with heavyweight politicians, former ministers, and closely watched constituencies expected to shape the outcome when voters head to the polls on July 11.

Topping the list is Machap, where Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi of Barisan Nasional (BN) faces a straight fight against Pakatan Harapan’s (PH) Nur Hafiz Roslan, a lawyer.

The contest is widely seen as a referendum on Onn Hafiz’s leadership after four years at the helm of the Johor state government.

Another key battleground is Puteri Wangsa, where former education minister Dr Maszlee Malik of PH faces the election’s highest-profile five-cornered contest against BN’s Teow Chia Ling, Nicholas Paul Vincent of Parti Bersama Malaysia (Bersama), Rashifa Al Junied of the Malaysian United Democratic Alliance (MUDA), and Independent Wang Wee Siong.

With more than 128,000 registered voters, Puteri Wangsa is among Johor’s largest constituencies and is expected to be one of the fiercest contests in the election.

In the north of the state, Bukit Kepong is shaping up as another key battleground, with former Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Dr Sahruddin Jamal carrying Perikatan Nasional’s (PN) challenge against BN’s Ahmad Syar’e Yusof and PH’s C. Subramani.

Permas will also be closely watched after Amanah fielded Sharon Teo Siew Hui as its first Chinese candidate in a four-cornered contest involving BN’s Baharudin Mohamed Taib, PN’s T. Vela, and Bersama’s Dr Zamil Najwah Arbain.

Attention will also be on Pasir Raja, where former Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Adham Baba returns to the state political arena after an eight-year absence. Representing BN, he faces PH’s Mohd Fakharuddin Moslim and PN’s Yuhanita Yunan in a three-cornered contest.

Urban voters will be watching Larkin, where BN incumbent Mohd Hairi Mad Shah, who is State Youth and Sports Committee chairman, takes on Pulai MP Suhaizan Kayat of PH, with Parti Bersama Malaysia’s Norsinah Abu adding another dimension to the contest.

Meanwhile, Endau will make electoral history as Parti Orang Asli Malaysia (ASLI) makes its election debut. The party has fielded Jati Awang against BN’s Alwiyah Talib, PH’s Saiful Nizam Samat, and PN’s Hasnul Hakimi Hussien in a four-cornered fight.

Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities dean, Associate Prof Dr Mazlan Ali, said several marginal seats narrowly won by BN in the 2022 state election, including Bukit Pasir and Parit Yaani, could ultimately determine whether the coalition retains its two-thirds majority or whether the opposition makes significant gains.

Polling is on July 11, with early voting set for July 7.

KULAI, June 28 — Pakatan Harapan (PH) will unveil its Johor election manifesto in the coming days with what it says will be a more practical and realistic set of promises, while keeping the identity of its menteri besar candidate close to its chest for now.

PH secretary-general Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said the coalition’s manifesto has been finalised and is awaiting final endorsement by its top leadership at a meeting on June 29 before being launched, Harian Metro reported this afternoon.

“In the past, Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari and I were too idealistic when preparing manifestos. They ran into hundreds of pages and covered all sorts of things. But over time we became much more realistic. A manifesto should be something realistic that people can understand and relate to,” he was quoted as saying in a press conference here.

Saifuddin Nasution said this time the coalition wanted to present a manifesto that was “realistic, tangible and reasonable”, with a simpler presentation that would not dilute its policy offerings.

He said the manifesto would focus on economic stability and prosperity, public welfare, political stability, good governance, increasing state revenue and ensuring the benefits of growth are shared more fairly with Johoreans.

He also said PH would continue championing what it described as performance-based politics over identity politics, arguing that voters were better served by solutions than divisive rhetoric.

He said Johor also stood to benefit from having a state administration that worked in tandem with the federal government to accelerate development and deliver more effectively on public policies.

On the question of PH's menteri besar candidate should the coalition win the Johor state election, Saifuddin Nasution said an announcement would only be made when the time was right.

He said PH's immediate priority was to campaign for its candidates and present its manifesto to voters across the state.

Saifuddin Nasution, who is also PKR's joint election director, said all 56 PH candidates successfully submitted their nomination papers yesterday, describing it as a positive start to the coalition's campaign.

Speculation over PH's choice for Johor menteri besar has continued throughout the election campaign, with former education minister Datuk Maszlee Malik widely tipped as a possible candidate if the coalition forms the next state government.

Maszlee was today nominated as PH’s Puteri Wangsa candidate.

PUTRAJAYA, June 27 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the decision to gazette 50 acres (20.23 hectares) of land in Bandar Malaysia as Malay Reserve Land is a significant step to safeguard Bumiputera interests, requiring both political courage and careful consensus-building.

He said the 480-acre Bandar Malaysia site was taken back by the government after the project failed due to alleged abuses under the previous administration, and is now being managed by Khazanah Nasional Bhd and Petroliam Nasional Bhd.

“The 50 acres is equivalent to 5,000 acres in Kedah in terms of value. It is not small in value, and I know this will be controversial if not handled properly.

“I emphasise that this is a decision to defend Bumiputera interests, which is very important and critical to me. It takes a lot of political courage and wisdom in engaging with all sectors,” he said at the opening of the National Convention of the Syariah Legal Profession 2026 here today.

The Prime Minister stressed that the decision does not involve taking land from any community, as the area is already government-owned.

Anwar said the government has briefed leaders from various communities on the rationale behind the move to prevent misunderstandings and ensure smooth implementation.

On June 27 last year, the Finance Ministry said further studies were being conducted on the development strategy for the 50-acre Malay reserve land within Bandar Malaysia to ensure alignment with the government’s aspiration of turning the development into an international business hub.

The ministry said several key principles are being considered, including clustered settlement areas near relevant facilities such as mosques, integrated development aligned with inclusivity under Malaysia MADANI, and potential cultural tourism attractions showcasing Malay heritage.

The project, located at the former Kuala Lumpur Air Base in Sungai Besi, is expected to have a gross development value of RM140 billion. — Bernama

BN candidate Ahmad Syar’e Yusof said the party’s confidence is fuelled by its robust divisional-level machinery, which has been steadily built over the past three years, alongside solid backing from both leadership and grassroots members.

PAGOH, June 27 — Barisan Nasional (BN) has kicked off its campaign for the 16th Johor state election with high confidence in its bid to wrest back the Bukit Kepong seat from Perikatan Nasional (PN).

BN candidate Ahmad Syar’e Yusof said the party’s confidence is fuelled by its robust divisional-level machinery, which has been steadily built over the past three years, alongside solid backing from both leadership and grassroots members.

“UMNO Pagoh and BN are in the best possible shape right now, and insya-Allah, we will carry this momentum all the way to polling day,” he told reporters after the nomination process at the Kompleks Sukan Pagoh nomination centre here today.

On facing the incumbent from Bersatu, Ahmad Syar’e said he feels no pressure; instead, he wants voters to judge for themselves the incumbent’s track record over the past two terms.

“After being given the trust and opportunity by the people of Bukit Kepong for two terms, let’s take a close look at what they have actually delivered for the people,” he said.

The former teacher also claimed that several development proposals, including housing projects that had been planned earlier, were not pursued, an issue he intends to highlight throughout the campaign period.

In this state poll, Ahmad Syar’e will face a three-cornered contest against incumbent Datuk Dr Shahruddin Jamal from PN, who is also the 17th Johor menteri besar, and C. Subramani from PH.

Bukit Kepong, which falls under the Pagoh parliamentary constituency, has 37,683 eligible voters for this state election.

The Johor state election will take place on July 11, with early voting on July 7.

BANGKOK, June 27 — Thai police have arrested an Australian man after the body of a 17-year-old girl was discovered in a suitcase, authorities said today.

The suspect, who denies involvement in the teenager’s alleged abduction and murder, was taken into custody after an interrogation, a police official in the resort city of Pattaya told AFP.

Investigators were awaiting the results of a post-mortem examination and “other evidence” in the case before filing charges, the official said.

The charges could include child abduction, murder, hiding a corpse and “abduction of a minor for sexual purposes”, added the official, who was speaking on condition of anonymity.

Media reports said the 46-year-old suspect was apprehended yesterday at Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport, where he was trying to purchase an airline ticket to Perth in Australia.

CCTV footage showed the suspect entering a condo in the seaside resort of Pattaya in the early hours of Thursday along with the 17-year-old Thai girl, according to the reports.

He emerged from the building several hours later, the reports said, carrying a large black suitcase which he then transported on the back of a motorbike.

Police found the suitcase yesterday near a railway track, discovering the victim’s body inside of it bearing signs of violence, local website Pattaya News reported.
