A few days after the outbreak of the war, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu convened a secret consultation with strategic advisers. He told them that his objective was to wage a prolonged war in order to delay an investigation into his role in the military disaster and ensure the survival of his government. He admitted that the war's objective to destroy Hamas' military and governing capabilities was unrealistic, but made it clear that a realistic objective would shorten the war.
