KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 29 — Hong Kong activist Nathan Law has reportedly been refused entry into Singapore after the authorities deemed his presence not in the country’s national interest.
According to Singapore’s CNA, the island-nation’s Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) said Law arrived at Changi Airport from San Francisco on Saturday and was referred for questioning, immigration and security assessment.
“Law’s entry into and presence in the country would not be in Singapore’s national interests,” MHA reportedly said in a statement in response to queries from CNA.
“A visa holder is still subject to further checks at point of entry into the country. That is what happened with Nathan La,” MHA reportedly added.
MHA reportedly said Law was subsequently denied entry and placed on the earliest flight back to San Francisco on Sunday.
Law fled Hong Kong in 2020 following the imposition of Beijing’s National Security Law, and now lives abroad under political asylum.
In a statement carried by international news agency Associated Press (AP), Law reportedly said he was detained for four hours at Changi Airport before being told of the decision and was deported after about 14 hours in Singapore.
He reportedly said he had planned to attend a closed-door, invitation-only event but declined to provide further details.
Law reportedly claimed the move was politically motivated.
The former student leader rose to prominence during the 2014 Umbrella Revolution and was briefly elected to Hong Kong’s legislature in 2016 before being disqualified.
