GEORGE TOWN: A bilal of a surau was sentenced to eight years’ jail and two strokes of the rotan for sexually assaulting a 12-year-old boy two years ago.

Akif Aiman Ab Shukor, 29, was convicted of molesting the boy and forcing the boy to perform oral sex at the Bukit Jambul Indah flats surau on May 2, 2020.

He was charged under sections 14(a) and 15(f) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017.

Sessions judge Mazdi Abdul Hamid, in delivering his verdict, said the prosecution had managed to prove the case beyond a reasonable doubt.

Deputy public prosecutor Farah Aimy Zainul Anwar, in her earlier submissions, asked the court to deliver a deterrent sentence as there was an increase in the number of young boys who were sexually assaulted.

Separately, before the same court, Mazdi ordered Jalalludeen Rahumathulla, 34, who was charged with three counts of sexual assault against a 14-year-old boy, to enter his defence, at the end of the prosecution’s case today.

Jalalludeen was accused of committing oral sex, sodomising and recording pornographic footage of the boy at the Desa Mawar apartment in December 2019.

He was charged in February 2020.

Lawyer V Parthipan represented the accused in both cases.
