More instability if Muhyiddin favours Peja over Azmin, says Puad

Ahmad Faizal Azumu (left) and Azmin Ali are speculated as being Bersatu’s possible choices as nominees to be deputy prime minister.

PETALING JAYA: An Umno Supreme Council member predicts more political instability following speculation that Muhyiddin Yassin prefers Ahmad Faizal Azumu to be Bersatu’s nominee for deputy prime minister instead of Azmin Ali.

Puad Zarkashi said it had been rumoured that Muhyiddin, who is leader of Bersatu and Perikatan Nasional, preferred Faizal, his deputy, over Azmin.

Azmin led a walkout from PKR in 2020 to help form a new government under Muhyiddin, and later became a senior minister in Ismail Sabri Yaakob’s government that took over last year.

“Azmin will definitely be incensed. And national politics will be more unstable,” Puad said in a Facebook post.

In January, Azmin and home minister Hamzah Zainudin were reported to be in the running to be named as Ismail’s deputy. Utusan Malaysia, quoting sources, said Muhyiddin was more inclined towards Azmin.

Puad also speculated that Muhyiddin had demanded that someone from Bersatu be appointed deputy prime minister when he met Ismail recently. He also wanted an MP from his party to take over as minister for plantation industries and commodities after Zuraida Kamaruddin quit Bersatu to join Parti Bangsa Malaysia.

“Muhyiddin’s actions will lead to political instability. If his demands are not met, he will continue to threaten and pressure (Ismail),” Puad said.

Muhyiddin had said on Saturday that his meeting with Ismail was to discuss political appointments, including the deputy prime minister’s post, as was previously agreed when Bersatu decided to support Ismail’s government.
