KUALA LUMPUR — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is said to be having an audience with the Negeri Sembilan Yang di-Pertuan Besar Tuanku Muhriz Tuanku Munawir this evening, local media report.
A car believed to be carrying the prime minister arrived at Istana Hinggap Negeri Sembilan in Bukit Perseketuan in the capital here at around 6pm, New Straits Times reports.
Another vehicle as well as a police motorcycle escort also accompanied the car.
Harian Metro meanwhile, said it has learnt that Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi will also be in attendance at the audience.
Negeri Sembilan is in a constitutional crisis after Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Ismail Lasim refused to comply with Tuanku Muhriz’ order issued last night to dismiss members of the State Executive Council (Exco).
Ismail this morning said he would not comply with the Yang di-Pertuan Besar’s request to present a fresh lineup of candidates for the ruler’s consideration to form a new exco.
Ismail said this was because the Yang di-Pertuan Besar had not consulted him as Menteri Besar, which he said was an unconstitutional move for a monarch who should act on the advice of the head of the state government.
The Exco, which had just taken their oath of office on August 7 following the state election, had on September 15 endorsed a proclamation by the state’s territorial chieftains (Undang Yang Empat) to remove Tuanku Muhriz and instal Tuanku Nadzaruddin Tuanku Ja’afar as the new Yang di-Pertuan Besar.
Tuanku Muhriz’s position as Yang di-Pertuan Besar was affirmed by the Attorney General’s Chambers (AGC) last week, with the AGC saying the proclamation to remove was invalid and did not comply with the mandatory requirements of Article 10 of the state constitution.
The AGC also said that Ismail and the state Exco had no unilateral power to terminate or vacate the position of the Yang di-Pertuan Besar of Negeri Sembilan.
The state Dewan Keadilan dan Undang (DKU) also affirmed that Tuanku Muhriz remains the legitimate Yang di-Pertuan Besar of Negeri Sembilan and Chairman of the DKU.
Since April, the state’s four territorial chieftains have sought the removal of Tuanku Muhriz as Yang di-Pertuan Besar over an unspecified breach of conduct.
The previous state administration under Pakatan Harapan (PH), prior to the state election on August 1, did not recognise the authority of one of the chieftains due to a prior dispute, and rejected their bid to remove Tuanku Muhriz.
Yesterday, Anwar Ibrahim referred to the conflict between the state administration and the palace in Negeri Sembilan when slamming political attempts to change the ruler.
“If we can change this Ruler from month to month, the royal system will fail…there are politicians who want to turn it into an issue. They want the Ruler to follow them. The Ruler must follow the Constitution. The Ruler should not follow politicians, otherwise the state will be ruined,” Anwar said. – September 21, 2026
