Amanah: Harapan's unity dream 'stabbed' as BN abandons vision of prejudice-free M'sia

Amanah deputy president Mujahid Yusof Rawa has accused BN of abandoning the aspiration of building a Malaysia free from prejudice and racial-religious hatred in its pursuit of political power.
Following BN’s “stabbing” of Pakatan Harapan in the Negeri Sembilan election by collaborating with Perikatan Nasional, Mujahid said the Anwar Ibrahim-led coalition must accept that its vision of unity with the Ahmad Zahid Hamidi-led BN may no longer be viable.
“Harapan must realise that the aspiration for unity hoped for together with BN has been seized by the dreams of Malay-Muslim supremacy brought by PN.
“This is a signal that Harapan will face an uphill battle if it is committed to bringing Malaysia’s politics towards values that better guarantee the nation’s future,” he added.
Mujahid further urged Harapan to engage in self-reflection to identify its weaknesses, stressing that efforts should be made to “build new strengths” and generate momentum ahead of the next general election.

He also described BN’s conduct during the state election as “regrettable”, accusing the coalition of dividing seats with PN to defeat the unity government that was in place before the state assembly was dissolved.
“The political message to the rakyat became more confusing when BN colluded with the opposition from PN, (and) used the advantage of their positions as ministers and other official positions to campaign,” he added.
Election rout
During the Aug 1 Negeri Sembilan polls, BN and PN successfully consolidated Malay votes to secure 25 seats, giving them a two-thirds majority in the state assembly, while Harapan was reduced to 11 seats.
PN’s seven seats were split between PAS, which won four, and Parti Wawasan Negara, which secured three. Umno captured 16 seats for BN, while MCA won the remaining two.
Of the 36 seats it contested, Harapan won 11, comprising nine from DAP and two from PKR. Amanah failed to secure victory in any of the nine seats it contested.

Harapan election director Amirudin Shari said BN and PN’s victory was driven by identity politics and communal rhetoric, which he described as having reached “extraordinary” levels.

Commenting on BN and PN’s success in Negeri Sembilan, Mujahid similarly attributed the victory to voters’ preference for “emotion and racial sentiment” over performance and achievements.
While affirming that Amanah respects the voters’ choice, Mujahid warned that parties promoting “race and religion-based political narratives” risk inflaming the political atmosphere.
“Distrust and hatred between races and religions will widen further, thereby undermining the stability and unity that are key to the nation’s prosperity,” he said.
In a separate statement, Pejuang information chief Rafique Rashid Ali insisted that under a democratic system, the people are “never wrong” in their choice, and that the mistake lies with leaders who refuse to understand why voters have turned their backs on them.

Dismissing claims that racial politics fueled the BN-PN victory in Negeri Sembilan, he quipped that it might be “easier” for Harapan to blame supposed racial sentiments than to admit that the rakyat have “lost confidence” in their failed administration.
“If the government has been successful, why is there a blue wave? Why are more and more people changing their minds?
“Can Loke’s defeat in Chennah also be considered racist, when a large portion of Chinese voters themselves no longer gave their support to DAP?” he asked.
