Hanipa: Maybe Anwar feels driver's assault more complex than 1MDB

Mohamed Hanipa Maidin, who has not concealed his frustration over the lack of progress in the e-hailing driver assault case, responded to Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s comments with a discernible dose of sarcasm.
“Perhaps, in his (Anwar’s) view, the case is highly complicated. Ergo, it needs a thorough investigation. Maybe, it is more complicated than the 1MDB saga,” he said in a Facebook post.
Earlier, Anwar, when quizzed on the delay in Ong Ing Keong’s case, said some cases were time-consuming and urged the public not to lose faith in the administration of justice.
However, Hanipa, who served as the deputy minister of legal affairs during the Pakatan Harapan federal administration in 2018, appeared to disagree.
“As a criminal lawyer, I, on the contrary, always assume cases which are investigated under Section 323 of the Penal Code (voluntarily causing hurt) are the simplest.
“Anyway, let’s give this government the benefit of the doubt. No worries, be happy,” the former Amanah MP quipped.
Deaf e-hailing driver Ong Ing Keong
Last week, Hanipa told Malaysiakini that if he were the Amanah president, he would press for an extraordinary general meeting (EGM).
“If I were the Amanah president, which I am not interested in nor qualified, I would press for an EGM to vote either to stay or leave the unity government. Period.
“If I were the attorney-general (AG), which I am not interested in nor qualified, I would prosecute the alleged perpetrator of the crime without fear or favour, God willing,” he said.
Hanipa, who could not understand the holdup, had described Ong’s case as simple.
“There is an alleged offender. There is a confirmed victim. There is a clear law.
“There is a prime minister who has been declaring to the entire world the new government would defend and establish the rule of law. There is an attorney-general who is entrusted to bring the alleged culprit to a court of law,” he added.
The assault
Ong was assaulted outside a hotel in Kuala Lumpur on May 28 by a police personnel escorting Johor Regent Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim.
On Sept 5, Ong, together with Lawyers for Liberty (LFL), submitted a memorandum and a dashcam recording of the assault to the Prime Minister’s Office.
The memorandum urged the prime minister to establish an independent commission of inquiry into the incident, among other things.
LFL also pointed out that the police stated that the investigation papers had been submitted twice to the prosecutors.

The more Anwar talks of the grab driver case the more foolish he appears. He should just haul up the IGP as the Home Affairs Minister is ineffective to get the investigation completed immediately.
