PETALING JAYA: MIC president SA Vigneswaran has denied playing any part in vice-president T Mohan’s loss in the party elections today, saying that he was surprised by the outcome.

He said he had no preference among the candidates vying for the three vice-president’s posts and left it to the delegates to make their choices with no restrictions whatsoever.

However, Vigneswaran admitted that he lent some support to R Nelson, who was among the three who won the posts, and said the new vice-president was “not in the same league” as the three incumbents.

T Murugiah and M Asojan defended their positions, while Nelson pipped Mohan to become the third vice-president, in the party leadership elections for the 2024-2027 term.

“Mohan is a well-known party leader and knows everybody. I expected him to pull through. I too was shocked at his defeat as he was among the favourites.

“Allegations to the contrary are all baseless as we are good friends. I have nothing against him.

“Mohan is not my enemy,” he told FMT.

Earlier, sources indicated to FMT that Vigneswaran was behind Mohan’s loss. They alleged that Mohan was not given the full delegates list and the leadership suspended some of the branches aligned with him.

Vigneswaran said it was not true that the delegates list was not given to Mohan as all candidates had access to the names.

“As for the closure of (some) branches, it was not to sabotage him. We cleaned up because we wanted real members and not phantoms.

“Some have 60 names but only 20 attend annual general meetings. There is no quorum so we need to ensure the party is real and strong,” he said.

Vigneswaran added that this was the cleanest election in the party’s history with candidates having access to all delegates freely.

“We did not hold dinners and other gatherings to campaign, unlike in the past,” he added.

Vigneswaran also said Mohan, 51, will be considered for the two appointed vice-president’s posts.
