PETALING JAYA: PKR vice-president Amirudin Shari has urged voters in Johor to take heed of the recent Selangor state election, where Pakatan Harapan lost its two-thirds majority because of a low voter turnout.

Voters in Johor go to the polls on Sept 9 to elect a new MP for Pulai and a state assemblyman for Simpang Jeram. The seats had been held by Amanah deputy president Salahuddin Ayub, who died in July.

Amirudin, who is also the Selangor menteri besar, said Selangor voters did not come out in numbers in the Aug 12 state election as they were confident that PH-Barisan Nasional could retain the state, Berita Harian reported.

He said Selangor recorded an overall voter turnout of about 71%, with the Chinese voter turnout only at 61%.

He claimed this led to slim losses for the unity coalition in four seats – Dengkil (400 votes), Taman Medan (30), Gombak Setia (58) and Sungai Kandis (167).

“I know many think that PH-BN has a huge chance of winning Pulai, but I also hope we don’t get too comfortable. Such an attitude will lead to what happened in Selangor,” he said at a ceramah in Bukit Indah, Johor Bahru, last night.

“If the voter turnout had been higher by another 0.5%, we would have won these four seats and secured a two-thirds majority in the state assembly.

“Therefore, to all Pulai and Simpang Jeram voters, please remind your friends that (we are voting for) this country and our future.”

Amirudin urged Johor voters to retain the two seats seat for PH as a show of respect for Salahuddin, the former domestic trade and cost of living minister.

PH’s Suhaizan Kaiat will face Perikatan Nasional’s Zulkifli Jaafar and independent candidate Samsudin Fauzi in the Pulai parliamentary by-election.

The Simpang Jeram state seat by-election will see a three-cornered fight among PH’s Nazri Abdul Rahman, PN’s Mazri Yahya and independent candidate S Jeganathan.
