Mukhriz and wife sell off Opcom shares

KUALA LUMPUR: Mukhriz Mahathir has disposed of a total of 24.6 million ordinary shares in Opcom Holdings Bhd, ceasing his position as a substantial shareholder of the company, Bursa Malaysia was told today.
In a filing with the stock exchange, Opcom said the disposal was made through two direct business transactions on Feb 10.
Mukhriz’s wife, Norzieta Zakaria, has also ceased to be a substantial shareholder in Opcom after Norzieta’s company, M Ocean Capital Sdn Bhd, disposed of 18 million shares through the open market on Wednesday.
Opcom Holdings, a manufacturer of optical fibre cables, was the centre of controversy in September 2019 over claims that the company would stand to benefit from a national plan to lay optical fibre cables across the country for Internet connections at much faster speeds.
The national fiberisation plan was announced in August that year by the Pakatan Harapan government, headed by Mukhriz’s father Dr Mahathir Mohamad as prime minister.
Mukhriz is a co-founder of the company and was its president until 2009 and held a substantial stake in the company at the time, while his elder brother Mokhzani was chairman until May 2019.
In May last year, Opcom issued a statement to say it was not involved in the national fiberisation plans as it did not possess the necessary licences to qualify as a participant in tenders for the contract.

The share price of Opcom Holdings closed at RM0.77 today, up one sen.

Najib's son ordered to pay RM37.6 million in unpaid taxes

KUALA LUMPUR: Former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak's son, Datuk Mohd Nazifuddin, has been ordered to pay RM37,644,810.73 in unpaid taxes to the Inland Revenue Board (IRB).
This was after a summary judgement order was entered in the IRB's tax arrears suit seeking to recoup the unpaid amount from Nazifuddin between 2011 and 2017.
In allowing the summary judgement, High Court judge Datuk Ahmad Zaidi Ibrahim said it has been proven that the plaintiff's (IRB) claim was clear and obvious.
He also said the defendant (Nazifuddin) had failed to prove that there were triable issues for the case to go for trial.

Najib’s daughter Nooryana loses bid to stay IRB suit for RM10m in unpaid taxes

KUALA LUMPUR, July 27 — The High Court today dismissed Nooryana Najwa Najib’s application for a stay of the Inland Revenue Board (IRB) civil suit against her for RM10.3 million in tax arrears.
High Court judge Faizah Jamaludin denied the application after hearing submissions from both Nooryana’s lawyer Muhammad Farhan Shafee and government lawyer Norhisham Ahmad, Malaysiakini reported.....
...Denying the application, Faizah said she could not allow a stay just because Nooryana was challenging the provision and that it was still legally binding as long as the law has yet to be deemed unconstitutional.
She added that if a stay were to be allowed, it would create a basis for others facing a similar case in the country to get a stay of their hearing, just because they are challenging the provision.
“If I am to allow this at the last hour, on the question of whether Section 106 is against the Constitution, then every single taxpayer in this country will apply for a stay on this ground,” Faizah said.
Faizah then fixed August 8 for both parties to submit additional submissions and August 26 for the summary judgment decision.
....The IRB filed the suit on July 24 last year, claiming that Nooryana failed to submit the Individual Income Tax Return Forms to the IRB, under Section 77 of the Income Tax Act for the years of assessment from 2011 to 2017.

PETALING JAYA: Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has questioned the government’s deal to grant a discharge not amounting to an acquittal to Riza Shahriz Abdul Aziz on money laundering charges related to the 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) scandal.
He said such a plea deal would send a wrong message when it comes to other corruption cases.
“We want to question whether it is logical for us to settle this case with negotiations, and just pay back a little.
“Let’s say if RM1bil was taken, return RM100mil and it’s settled.
“Tomorrow he steals 10 chickens, just return one chicken, and it’s settled, ” he said in a Facebook Live session on Wednesday (May 20).
Anwar said the law must be enforced equally on everyone, irrespective of their political standing.
