Kian Ming gives 3 reasons for DAP to remain in govt
This includes denying BN the opportunity to pull support from the Cabinet and the government and trigger an early general election
DAP’s former Bangi MP Ong Kian Ming said if delegates choose to leave, party leaders can still decide on the exact timing for Cabinet members to resign.
PETALING JAYA: DAP’s Ong Kian Ming says the party’s delegates should vote to remain in the Cabinet at its special congress this weekend to ensure a smooth tabling and debate of the 2027 budget in October.
In a Facebook post, the former Bangi MP said by remaining in government, DAP would also help ensure policy stability through the economic uncertainty caused by US president Donald Trump’s policies, especially in the Middle East.
“And thirdly, not wanting to give Barisan Nasional (BN) and Umno the opportunity to pull support from the Cabinet and the government and trigger an early general election,” he said.
He said the only good reason for delegates to vote for DAP leaders to resign from the Cabinet would be to force Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s hand to deliver at least some political reforms before the next general election.
He said DAP delegates and Pakatan Harapan (PH) supporters must realise that Anwar responds and reacts when he is being pressured by individuals, groups, organisations or certain political circumstances.
He said this was why DAP secretary-general Loke Siew Fook called for a special congress, to remind Anwar that DAP delegates have the power to force party leaders to resign from the Cabinet.
“Regardless of the delegates’ speeches or the demands made by DAP leaders at the special congress or through social media, any leverage DAP may have on Anwar will disappear the moment most of the delegates vote to ‘remain’ in the Cabinet,” he said, expressing hope that delegates would vote to leave.
Ong said if delegates vote to leave, DAP leaders could still decide on the exact timing for Cabinet members to resign.
They could come to an agreement with Anwar that they would only resign after the passing of the 2027 budget in the Dewan Rakyat and Dewan Negara in December 2026, he said.
They could also negotiate with Anwar to pass crucial legislative changes including the 10-year term limit for the prime minister and an equal parliamentary allocation act during this parliamentary session, he added.
“These actions may not be sufficient to ensure that PH and DAP remain in government for a second term after GE16, but at least DAP can say that it was willing to quit the government on the basis of principle rather than be accused of voting to protect its own self-interests.”
On Sunday, 4,264 DAP delegates will decide whether the party should remain in or withdraw from government posts for the remainder of the parliamentary term. Perak DAP yesterday unanimously backed remaining in the unity government to allow it to deliver on its election promises.
