SABAH POLLS | PKR’s joint election directors for the 17th Sabah polls - Nurul Izzah Anwar and Saifuddin Nasution Ismail - today said the party has accepted its single-seat victory in Melalap as a signal and reminder from the people.
Describing the 73-seat Sabah assembly as a challenging arena, Nurul Izzah noted PKR was given the opportunity to contest 12 seats - an increase from eight in the 2020 polls.
“(This is) an increase that reflects how the seeds of confidence in PKR have begun to take root in Sabah.
“The support from our machinery and members has also grown stronger; it may not be a victory in numbers, but it is a victory in determination and resolve,” said Nurul Izzah in a statement which Saifuddin also endorsed.
PKR’s newly elected Melalap assemblyperson, Jamawi Jaafar, was a Gagasan Rakyat Sabah (Gagasan) member up until his formal announcement as a Harapan candidate before nomination day.
Nurul Izzah and Saifuddin thanked their party’s machinery for the tireless efforts throughout the campaign.

PKR flags
“We ourselves witnessed this sincerity - an uncle who went into the forest to gather bamboo to raise the flags until he was injured; women who worked together to cook from early morning to ensure the machinery had the strength to continue serving.
“Small sacrifices to them, but deeply meaningful to this struggle,” they said.
“At the same time, the results also reflect the people’s sentiments on issues of governance, transparency, and local leadership.
“A clear message that disunity not only weakens political strength, but also erodes public confidence in our ability to offer stable and responsible leadership,” said the duo.
Nurul Izzah said she also took full responsibility as PKR’s deputy president.
The long journey
Malaysiakini understands that since official nominations, Nurul Izzah spent Nov 18 and Nov 19 on the campaign trail in Sabah across seats in the greater Kota Kinabalu area - Tulid, Inanam, Petagas, and Moyog.
Subsequently, Prime Minister and PKR president Anwar Ibrahim returned to the campaign trail on a series of events across Sandakan, Tawau, and Kota Kinabalu, including an appearance with GRS chairperson Hajiji Noor in Sulaman.

Commenting further, Nurul Izzah said, “Together with Saifuddin as election director, we recognise that this long journey does not rest solely on victory, but on the willingness to acknowledge weaknesses, improve from them, and rise again stronger.”
“Congratulations to all candidates who have been given the mandate, including the single seat entrusted to PKR.
“Carry this trust with dedication; serve with honest resolve, for every action you take will shape the future of the people who chose you,” she stressed.
PKR secretary-general Fuziah Salleh, at a press conference last night with state Harapan chief Mustapha Sakmud in Kota Kinabalu, was the first to announce that the party is ready to form a government with GRS, several hours before official results were released.
Mustapha was also among the first leaders spotted at Hajiji’s official residence in Kota Kinabalu.
Harapan is left with one PKR seat in Sabah after DAP was wiped out in eight seats, and Amanah lost its single attempt in Sulabayan.
