PETALING JAYA: Amanah will review a resolution from one of its divisions urging Pakatan Harapan (PH) to contest the upcoming Melaka state election on its own.

The Hang Tuah Jaya Amanah division passed the resolution yesterday, with members unanimously agreeing that PH should be prepared to face three-cornered contests if necessary.

Amanah secretary-general Faiz Fadzil said the push to go solo may have been driven by overlapping seat claims with Umno.

“Amanah must respect the voice of the grassroots as this is a motion passed during the division’s annual meeting,” he said.

“I understand the concerns of grassroots members as many of the seats contested by Amanah overlap with Umno’s.”

Amanah Youth chief Hasbie Muda said a final decision on whether to accept or reject the Hang Tuah Jaya resolution would be made at the party’s national convention.

“Every view and motion from the grassroots will be considered and must be respected by the leadership,” he said.

The Melaka state assembly has 28 seats: 20 held by Barisan Nasional (BN), five by PH, and three by Perikatan Nasional.

Disputes over seat allocations in Melaka also surfaced in May when nine Melaka DAP branches proposed an equal split in seats between PH and BN, with each contesting 14 seats in the next election.

BN chairman Ahmad Zahid Hamidi later said that such discussions were premature as the Melaka polls are only expected to be held next year. The current state assembly term ends in December 2026.
