Some Wanita Umno leaders pushing for Shahrizat’s return, says source

PETALING JAYA: A number of Wanita Umno leaders are pushing for a return of the wing’s former chief, Shahrizat Jalil, says a source in the know.
Shahrizat, a former federal minister, led the women’s wing from 2008 to 2018, when Barisan Nasional fell from power. She has not been active in politics since then.
“It is the wishes of the grassroots (that Shahrizat returns), not hers. The grassroots want a strong leader,” said the source, who declined to be named.
The source said several Wanita Umno division leaders have met Shahrizat to ask her to contest in the coming party elections, as they felt the wing was now “weak and lethargic”.
“Shahrizat understands (the grassroots’ wishes), she views it (the situation) positively,” said the source, adding that a return was on the cards.
Current Wanita Umno chief Noraini Ahmad is expected to defend her post.
A Wanita Umno division chief, who also declined to be named, said Noraini, the Parit Sulong MP, did not inspire confidence.
“When Shahrizat was chief, she was firm, she was a fighter. Under Noraini, we (Wanita Umno) are seen to be slow and lethargic,” she said.
She also claimed Noraini did not go to the ground often and this was why the grassroots did not feel she provided leadership.
Umno’s elections began in stages on Feb 1 and will end on March 18.
