Three factors to recapture Kedah in next polls, says Harapan state leader

Pakatan Harapan is determined to recapture Kedah in the next state election based on the current political situation.

Harapan’s communications director for the state, Dr Ismail Salleh, said the coalition was aware of the degree of difficulty after it faced a Perikatan Nasional (PN) “tsunami” in the 15th general election (GE15).

However, Harapan has organised various strategies and is confident the situation will be different next time around, he said.

He said the coalition’s confidence in capturing Kedah was based on three main factors - the temporary “PN tsunami”, the excellence of the coalition government’s federal administration, and the political cooperation between Harapan and Umno.

“The recent PN tsunami in GE15 is temporary because the wave is based on racial and religious sentiments. Many realised that these sentiments were only for political gain and do not provide any benefit in nation-building efforts.

“The second factor is the administrative excellence of the ruling coalition government even though it has only been a month since it came into power.

“The prime minister has not only spoken but has acted by showing the best example. His determination to bring this country to the top is evident in addition to the strength of his personal aura.

“The pouring of recognition from leaders around the world with the commitment to help invest in the country will speed up economic growth which in turn will prosper and improve the lives of the people,” he said in a media statement today.

In GE15, Harapan performed relatively poorly in Kedah after winning only one parliamentary seat while the other 14 were won by PN.

Harapan formed the Kedah government after the 2018 general election but their administration fell after the Sheraton Move political coup in 2020.

Currently, the Kedah government is controlled by PN with 21 of 36 state seats.

Meanwhile, Ismail said the third factor for Harapan’s victory in Kedah is the political cooperation between Harapan and Umno-BN after the two coalitions united to form the federal government.

According to him, discussions about this cooperation at all levels have already started.

“These three main factors will slow down the momentum of the ‘PN tsunami’ and will give an advantage to Harapan and BN and in turn, will give us victory in the upcoming state election,” he said.
