KUALA LUMPUR – A popular roti canai stall frequented by tourists on Jalan Transfer in Penang has been forced to cease operations for two weeks after failing hygiene checks.

The owner of the eatery, Shahjahan Abdul Hamad, is also facing a RM500 fine for failing to register his workers for food-handling courses.

According to The Star, health authorities from the north-east district Food Safety and Quality Department had conducted an inspection of the premises around 11am today.

The enforcement personnel reportedly discovered faecal matter on chicken eggs used in the stall’s dishes. A closure notice was subsequently issued with immediate effect under Section 11 of the Food Act 1983.

The forced shutdown will be effective until January 16.

Additionally, a drinks stall next to the eatery was also slapped with a RM500 compound as its ice storage unit was found to be cross-contaminated.

Last week, a video alleging that workers at the roti canai stall failed to practise proper hygiene had made its rounds on social media. – The Vibes, January 2, 2023
