Will PN chief rein in PAS' relentless attacks against govt?

Since Perikatan Nasional (PN) lost at the polls on Nov 19, its component party PAS has been launching relentless attacks against the Pakatan Harapan-BN government.

In most of the attacks, Harapan component DAP has been on the receiving end.

In a post on its Facebook page today, the Islamist party relayed its "condolences" to Umno, for finally doing DAP's bidding by working together in the government.

"Now the Umno grassroots have to accept the fact that DAP cannot be 'disturbed' again. Umno members also have to accept that communists are now the country's heroes, as preached by DAP leaders.

"Umno, which once fought for the country's independence, has to now help DAP rewrite the country's independence history. Congratulations DAP, condolences to Umno," read the statement by PAS’ central committee.

The message further alleged that Umno is "forced" to submit to DAP as the latter has the highest seat count in Harapan.

"The choice has been made, positions have been offered, like it or not, Umno has to accept and cater to DAP's wishes," PAS said, further alleging that Umno leaders who voiced out against the party working with DAP have been sidelined.

Leading the charge in PAS’ attacks is its president Abdul Hadi Awang (above, right), who last week accused DAP of promoting Islamophobia.

At about the same time, the PAS central committee also accused DAP of being a "parasite" by riding on the government led by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.

Earlier, PAS' Baling MP Hassan Saad alleged that Anwar was an Israeli agent, which resulted in the police probing him for criminal defamation and breaching the peace.

Also last week, Hadi appeared to question Anwar's appointment as prime minister by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong after he used a football analogy, asking whether it is fair for a World Cup referee to shift the goalpost for losers.

This was after PN insisted it secured a simple majority to form the federal government, which was supposed to have been led by the coalition's chairperson Muhyiddin Yassin (above, left).

Muhyiddin's 'deafening silence'

Another question raised amid these political attacks by PAS is Muhyiddin's relative silence on the matter.

His last statement appears to be on Nov 25, when he hinted at a possible confidence and supply agreement (CSA) with the government, after conceding his coalition’s loss at the polls.

Muhyiddin also said PN will continue to remain in the opposition to provide a check and balance role to the government.

The Pagoh MP's Facebook page was also last updated on Nov 25, the same day the above two statements were issued.

Amid such politicking, the Conference of Rulers recently urged the new government to instil a "spirit of togetherness" among Malaysians.

In a decree after chairing the recent 260th Conference of Rulers, the Yang di-Pertuan Besar of Negeri Sembilan Tuanku Muhriz Tuanku Munawir called for an end to racist and religious incitement.

"I hope there will no longer be leaders who raise racial or religious issues with the purpose of incitement.

"I urge the new government to seize this opportunity to propel the country to greater heights," the ruler decreed.

DAP veteran Lim Kit Siang also today proposed the formation of a commission to prompt Hadi and other PAS leaders to submit evidence of their claim that DAP and its allies are promoting Islamophobia.

The commission should also make recommendations on how to prevent Malaysia from being divided by “toxic politics of lies, fear, hatred, race, and religion,” he said in a statement.

Forming the commission should be an urgent issue that should be addressed by the new cabinet under Anwar, Lim stressed.

  1. It is no secret that Hadi and PAS are the kingpins in PN. Hadi simply does not care about what Mahiaddin thinks. Mahiaddin's job is to swallow whatever Hadi dishes out.
