Ampang stalemate as Anwar, Rafizi differ on candidate, says source

The Ampang seat will see either PKR vice-president Nurul Izzah Anwar (left) or Batu Tiga assemblyman Rodziah Ismail taking on incumbent Zuraida Kamaruddin.

PETALING JAYA: PKR has yet to decide who among two women candidates will contest in the Ampang seat in the upcoming general election (GE15).

A source from PKR’s Ampang division told FMT that the seat will either be contested by PKR vice-president Nurul Izzah Anwar or Batu Tiga assemblyman Rodziah Ismail.

“The final decision is yet to be made because there is a clash between the candidates’ list from party president Anwar Ibrahim and that of deputy president Rafizi Ramli,” the source said.

“Rafizi wants Rodziah to contest for the seat as she has been a Selangor state executive councillor for two consecutive terms.”

The source added that the Permatang Pauh seat will likely be contested by Wanita PKR chief Fadhlina Sidek if Nurul Izzah does contest in Ampang.

The source said although Ampang was not a safe seat, Anwar’s family was looking to contest seats that were won by Pakatan Harapan (PH) in GE14 but were lost when its MPs defected to other parties.

Former PKR vice-president Zuraida Kamaruddin won the Ampang seat in GE14 when she was with PKR. However, she was among the 11 PKR MPs who shifted their allegiance to Bersatu in February 2020, resulting in the collapse of the ruling PH coalition.

She and the other defectors are therefore seen as “traitors” by the PKR faithful.

Zuraida is a three-term Ampang MP having won it in the 2008 and 2013 general elections as well. She is expected to defend the seat under the Parti Bangsa Malaysia (PBM) ticket on Nov 19.

Earlier this month, she was officially installed as president of PBM. The party was reported to have applied to join Barisan Nasional (BN).
