Kit Siang asks who is Umno's PM candidate amid worry about Najib's comeback
DAP supremo Lim Kit Siang wants to know who will be Umno's prime ministerial candidate for the 15th general election.
This was amid speculation that former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak, who has been convicted of money laundering, criminal breach of trust and abuse of power, is trying to make a political comeback.
He noted that last year, Umno's BN partner MIC had also nudged Umno to name the coalition's prime ministerial candidate.
"So who will be Umno's prime minister after the 15th general election?
"Will he be Ismail Sabri Yaakob, or will MCA and MIC support Najib as Malaysia's 10th or 11th prime minister?" Lim said in a statement.
But Mahathir's sins were/are OK to Lim Kit Siang
The Iskandar Puteri MP drew parallels between Najib and former US president Donald Trump.
"Over the weekend, Trump publicly toyed with another bid for the White House, with his political organisation announcing it had amassed US$122 million in cash reserves - an unprecedented sum for a former president - conjuring a vision of a second term that would function as a tool of personal vengeance and become even more authoritarian than his first, when he vowed to pardon US Capitol insurrectionists if he runs for the White House again and wins.
"Najib, who had already prepared for his political comeback by opening an international conference and appearing on a front-page interview in a leading national daily though he is a convicted criminal for corruption, is undoubtedly the Malaysian politician who is most-heeled financially commanding the largest fleet of cyber troopers to mould and shape public opinion with lies and disinformation," he said.
Najib served as the sixth prime minister from 2009 to 2018, while Trump served as the 45th US president from 2017 to 2021.
Lim said even though Trump had described Najib as his "favourite prime minister", he did not exonerate Najib from the 1MDB scandal and then US attorney-general Jeff Sessions had described it as "kleptocracy at its worst".
"Just as Trump is not averse to whitewashing the Capitol Hill insurrection on Jan 6, 2021, Najib has no qualms to whitewash the 1MDB scandal...," Lim added.
Najib was on July 28, 2020, sentenced by the Kuala Lumpur High Court to 12 years imprisonment and fined RM210 million over criminal breach of trust, abuse of power and money laundering charges related to SRC International Sdn Bhd, a former 1MDB subsidiary.
The Court of Appeal upheld the decision on Dec 8 last year, but Najib is appealing the decision at the Federal Court.

I also want to make sure Najib is in no position to come back to power, directly or by proxy via a weak UMNO Prime Minister who has to report to Najib.
