JPJ denies ‘protecting’ timber lorries at Gua Musang

JPJ says it has started a special operation to check on timber lorries.

PETALING JAYA: The Road Transport Department (JPJ) has denied “protecting” 30 timber lorries at Gua Musang, Kelantan, recently after a video of them escorting the lorries went viral.

It said its officers were escorting the lorries to the weighing station to ensure the drivers did as instructed.

In a statement last night, JPJ said it was concerned over the safety of other road users.

“Escorting the lorries to the weighing station is part of the SOPs to ensure road safety,” it said.

It said it would lodge a police report against those who claimed the enforcement team was “protecting” the timber lorries as such claims created a negative perception against them.

The claims would also have an impact on their credibility while carrying out enforcement duties.

JPJ also said it had started a special operation from Jan 3 to check on timber lorries and had issued 56 notices for various offences.

A video showing JPJ officers stopping traffic to make way for the lorries had gone viral on Jan 3, with an individual claiming they refused to say why.
