DAP upset with allies over Melaka “frogs?”: It’s just a political gimmick, don says
WITH DAP seemingly livid over its allies’ decision to accept two out of the Melaka quartet, an analyst opined that it was just a political gimmick to pander towards its supporters.
“DAP is trying to appease its supporters and members who are against former UMNO leaders from joining Pakatan Harapan.
“The party is looking out for its Chinese vote bank. While a sizable portion of the Malay community are against party hoppers, the others are not that unhappy as they view the two Melaka leaders positively,” Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) political analyst Prof Dr Mohd Azizuddin Mohd Sani told FocusM.

Recently, DAP was seen to be at odds with its allies PKR and Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah) over the latter’s decision to field former UMNO state assembly persons Datuk Seri Idris Haron and Datuk Nor Azman Hassan under its banner.
While Idris will be contesting the Asahan state seat under the PKR flag, Azman will be contesting the Pantai Kundor state seat using the Amanah flag.
DAP also set tongues-wagging after it decided not to attend Pakatan’s candidates unveiling event three days ago, with sources telling the media that the party was making a stand against party-hoppers.
Touching on the matter, Azizuddin said that DAP’s “anger” will subside if Pakatan wins the Melaka state election.
“If they win the state, DAP will naturally accept the duo if the latter win their seats,” he stated.
On Idris, the academic said that one should not underestimate the former’s clout as he had served as Melaka’s chief minister in the past.
Azizuddin added that it was also strategically sound for Pakatan to move Idris from Sungai Udang to Asahan as the latter hails from that area.
“He is a local boy there and quite popular. If you put things into perspective, Pakatan won 15 out of the 28 state seats in Melaka in the last general election.
“With Idris being moved to Asahan and Azman retained at Pantai Kundor, it may increase Pakatan’s chances of capturing Melaka again,” he noted.
Moral high ground vs winnability
On Pakatan’s welcome towards party-hoppers despite signing a pledge with the Government to moot an anti-party hopping law, Azizuddin said that the Opposition may have lost some moral high-ground on the matter.
“But I spent some time in Melaka recently and the voters there don’t seem to be that disturbed by it, given the credentials of Idris and Azman. They are quite open to the duo.
“If you look at things in the terms winnability, having both Idris and Azman on your side is definitely a plus point,” he stressed.
Asked whether the duo may defect to Barisan Nasional (BN) or Perikatan Nasional after winning their seats, Azizuddin said the scenario was unlikely to happen.
“I don’t think UMNO will accept the duo for now. In any case, we have to wait until the next general election which is projected to be held next year,” he remarked. – Nov 9, 2021.
