Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh declared today that he will continue his campaign against the desecration of the Jalur Gemilang.

In a Facebook video, he urged authorities to investigate and prosecute the Terengganu Umno Youth member responsible for a poster bearing incorrect flag stripes.

Akmal also branded DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke a "hypocrite", accusing him of failing to apply his own standards to the flag blunder issue.

Akmal also used racial overtones in an “us against them” analogy, alleging that the DAP, MCA and similar groups will stick together despite differing political beliefs.

"From Loke's statement, he told me that I was being pushy and that it was inappropriate to interfere, and I want to say this as well. Right here, Loke said that he claimed a shopkeeper in Penang had mistakenly put up a flag.

“Actually, even that 'mistaken' statement, Loke shouldn't have said first. Why? Let the attorney-general define whether it was mistaken or not.

"If you do it this way, it means Loke has also pre-empted the AG. So, it's more or less the same thing.

"And I want to tell Loke as well. This is fresh news, fresh news. Malaysiakini has just reported that Terengganu Umno Youth made a poster with insufficient stripes.

“There are roughly two stripes missing there, and I want to say I've already verified that the mistake indeed came from the person who made the poster, and we take responsibility," Akmal added.

He said that though the error came from his own wing member, he would not back down.

"Even though this is my gang, wrong is still wrong, and I ask the police to investigate and take firm action against the person who made this poster. Why?

“This is an action we cannot accept, even though it comes from our family and also from our own friends. So, to Loke, we are not hypocrites like you," Akmal said.

Flag issue

The error on the flag used in a poster seeking justice for 13-year-old Zara Qairina Mahathir was noticed by eagle-eyed internet users, many of whom questioned whether Akmal would now give Terengganu Umno Youth a dressing down.

The original graphic was deleted at 12.55pm today, and replaced with a new graphic containing the correct number of stripes on the Jalur Gemilang.

Politicians critical of Akmal were quick to poke at the situation.

Earlier, the DAP said that it would be mobilising its members in Penang to defend a hardware store that made a flag blunder from troublemakers.

Loke said DAP members will be armed with Malaysian flags, which they will hand out as a sign of unity.

“If there is anyone who tried to disturb the peace at the premises, Penang DAP members will greet them by handing out 831 Jalur Gemilang for free as a sign of unity in conjunction with (National Day) on Aug 31,” said the DAP secretary-general in a statement today.

Loke was believed to be referring to Akmal, who threatened to stage a protest outside the hardware store in Kepala Batas on Thursday if the shop owner was not charged for hoisting the Malaysian flag upside down in a viral 20-second video.

Akmal, in response to Loke, thanked him for the DAP's flag initiative, saying that, like him, Loke too was "more or less trying to teach that shopkeeper how to put up the flag properly".

"So, thank you, Loke, for teaching that shopkeeper how to put up the flag correctly. And since Loke has already taught them, I won't hold my class.

“We're cancelling that class, but I will still come this Thursday, because we want to see Loke put up that flag, whether he does it correctly or not.

"I heard the DAP people want to welcome us that afternoon, that's fine. And they say they want to give out flags. God willing, we'll also bring flags that we'll distribute together to raise awareness, amongst others,” said Akmal.
