Police seize laptop from Mkini over probe against KJ

Police have seized a laptop from Malaysiakini to facilitate investigations against former minister Khairy Jamaluddin.

Previously, Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department (CID)’s Special Investigation Unit recorded a statement from the news portal’s executive editor RK Anand over the matter.

However, Malaysiakini was subsequently informed that the laptop needed to be confiscated as well.

Malaysiakini would also have to go to the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) headquarters in Putrajaya tomorrow to enable its officers to extract details on the portal’s content management system (CMS).

The news portal was informed that failure to comply is an offence.

Police are investigating Khairy under Section 500 of the Penal Code for defamation and Section 233 of the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.

This followed a police report lodged by Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Azalina Othman Said’s political secretary Suraya Yaacob over a Malaysiakini article which quoted Khairy’s comments in his podcast Keluar Sekejap.

Commenting on the royal addendum saga related to former premier Najib Abdul Razak, Khairy had said that it has led to a trust crisis within Umno.

He also implied that Azalina was complicit in concealing the addendum.

“The letter - the addendum - was submitted to the attorney-general (AG). There’s no way the AG didn’t inform the direct line minister, who is the law minister,” he said.

In her police report, Suraya claimed the news was false and tarnished Azalina’s reputation.

Police have also recorded Khairy’s statement.
