PM: Some want me to interfere in court proceedings

Embattled Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin claimed that his critics are "uncomfortable" with him because he refused to accede to their demands, including interfering with the courts.

"This includes appeals for me to interfere in court matters to free several individuals who are being charged over criminal acts," said Muhyiddin during a televised address today.

Muhyiddin did not name these individuals.

Among the 11 MPs who publicly revolted against Muhyiddin yesterday, there are four Umno MPs facing criminal trials:

Ahmad Zahid Hamidi (Bagan Datuk)
Najib Abdul Razak (Pekan)
Azeez Abdul Rahim (Baling)
Ahmad Maslan (Pontian)

Of the four, Najib has been convicted and handed a 12-year jail sentence. He is appealing the verdict.

Pekan MP Najib Abdul Razak disputed Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin’s claim that his critics were upset because he refused to interfere in their criminal court cases.

The former prime minister, who has been convicted for one of his 1MDB-related trials, said this would not be the approach of those who sought favours.

“He (Muhyiddin) blamed and lied that those who withdrew their support from him are those who want their cases dismissed when the best way to have them (cases) dismissed is by sucking up to him, not fighting against him,” he said in a Facebook post.

Najib was one of the 10 MPs who flanked Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi as the latter announced that “enough” party lawmakers had withdrawn their support from the PM to cost him his Dewan Rakyat majority.

Among the Umno MPs who publicly revolted against Muhyiddin yesterday, there are four Umno MPs facing criminal trials:

Zahid (Bagan Datuk)
Najib (Pekan)
Azeez Abdul Rahim (Baling)
Ahmad Maslan (Pontian)

Meanwhile, Najib also questioned why Muhyiddin was only doing a vote of confidence in September.

“He (Muhyiddin) said he believed he still has majority support. But he promised the Yang di-Pertuan Agong to table a confidence vote during the September Parliament sitting.

“Why not now seeing that we have just entered August?

“Is it because Covid-19 is still attacking Parliament? But I saw those who were exposed to Covid-19 in Parliament were free to move around for meetings every night at home,” he said.

Parliament proceedings were supposed to resume on Monday, but had been postponed indefinitely - with the prime minister citing Covid-19 risks.
