But before the meeting was arranged by Daim Zainuddin, Anwar confided to Samy Vellu that he was likely to be arrested by Mahathir.
Vell Paari (son of Samy Vellu) said the meeting was held after the disclosure of alleged nepotism and cronyism with regard to government contracts at the UMNO annual meet in June 1998. Remember that was when Ahmad Zahid as UMNO Youth Chief had attacked Mahathir on behalf of the Anwar faction.
Present at that meeting were of course the two protagonists Mahathir and Anwar, but also a,mong them were Samy Vellu and Daim Zainuddin. Just outside the group (but within hearing distance) was Vell Paari and a corporate mate of Anwar who had since passed away.

Malaysiakini reported the following:
“During the meeting, Anwar apologised to Mahathir and promised never to attack Mahathir's children again (on the allegation of receiving government contracts).
“Mahathir said if the attacks (against his children) are stopped, Anwar would be chosen to replace him as prime minister.
“Anwar believed Mahathir. But after that meeting, Mahathir 'mengukuhkan' (strengthened) the allegations (of sodomy) against Anwar,” he added.
Vell Paari said that he felt compelled to reveal these details out of sympathy for the jailed former opposition leader's family, especially his wife Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail and daughter Nurul Izzah, who believe that if Mahathir becomes prime minister again, he would seek a royal pardon for Anwar.

“These are Mahathir's tricks. I still remember the discussion in 1998 at Sri Perdana.
“If he cannot fulfil his promise (for Anwar to replace him), can Wan Azizah and Nurul still trust this 'guy'?” he asked.

While Vell Paari is from BN and thus unfriendly to Mahathir, what he said has much plausibility because Mahathir has a tendency to go back on his words. For example:
(a) he has reneged on his 1990 'Bangsa Malaysia' promise, ...

... where he himself had said would lead to "people being able to identify themselves with the country, speak Bahasa Malaysia (the Malay language) and accept the Constitution."
Just a mere 10 years on, on 24 August 2010, Mahathir mocked proponents of meritocracy in a blog posting, calling them racist and decried Malays who support meritocracy as having misplaced pride.
He also blasted advocates of meritocracy, calling them “meritocrats” pushing for dominance by one race in all aspects of the country.
Dr Mahathir added that the campaign for meritocracy was not a campaign against racism but a movement by racists against racists.
At a separate function last night, the former premier then warned Malays to be united or risk losing political power.

On 18 May 2008 the Star Online reported:
“We saw voters voting as one, regardless of race and religion. We had Malays, Chinese, Indian, Kadazan voters rising above their ethnic stereotype and voting as Malaysians,” he said.
Lim said that 50 years after the nation’s independence, Malaysians should be more “Malaysian-minded” instead of retreating into their “communal selves.”
The veteran politician was commenting on former prime minister Tun Mahathir Mohamad’s remarks in Johor on Saturday that Malays stood to lose much in the new political environment where non-Malays were unafraid to make demands.
Dr Mahathir told the crowd of some 1,000 in Johor Baru that if Malays keep quiet they will lose their rights and other races will take over.
Lim said the former prime minister who had introduced the Bangsa Malaysia concept now appeared to be backtracking on his stand.
“We should be talking more about Bangsa Malaysia rather than Malay, Chinese or Indian rights.”

(b) he promised Hussein Onn that he would make Ku Li his DPM after Ku Li finished his financial tasks - we know the rest of the story, with Lord president of the Judiciary, Tun Saleh Abas and 5 other High Court judges getting the sack,

(c) he politically, legally, socially and morally retired in 2003 after choosing AAB as his successor, BUT he continued to hound, harass, heckle PM AAB as if he was the vetting, overriding and PM-supervisor, an imperialistic unauthorised role he carried over to the PM-ship of Najib,
etc etc etc.
If what Vell Paari said has been true, then Mahathir was 101% treacherous, revengeful and unforgiving to Anwar Ibrahim.
You want to vote such a man as your future PM?

Such righteousness intertwined with her Western understanding of citizen's right under democracy rules!
My foot!
All the message sending across is a misguided M40 spoiled brat, drown with her own limited understanding of CHANGE as a prerequisite in activating the sense of 大我.
She traces anglicized Bills of Right w/o a sense of temporal direction.
The civilized West of current making has gone through many baths of fire thorougout their history before achieving the normalised form of citizen's right of today. There r checks&balances well entrusted within their current system to prevent misuses.
Perhaps this narcissistic brat should ponder deeply as in:
After 1MDB, a change in government is a must, says Ambiga
“Boycotting your vote in a country where elections are free and fair, can send a message. People will know you are important,
“But in a country where elections are not free and fair, you are giving the other side a walkover, you are giving those in power a walkover,” she said.
Enough said!!!
