Malaysian classical dancer Datuk Ramli Ibrahim will be conferred one of India’s highest civilian awards to honour his distinguished service in the arts.
According to a statement by India’s Home Ministry, the Padma Awards are conferred in three categories, namely the Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri.
The awards, which are given in various disciplines such as the arts, social work, public affairs and more, are announced annually on the occasion of India’s Republic Day. [...]
Ramli, the 64-year-old Sutra Foundation chairman, will receive the Padma Shri, which is awarded for distinguished service in any field.

Ramli would be one of 16 foreigners to receive a Padma Award.
These awards are conferred by the President of India at ceremonial functions which are held at Rashtrapati Bhawan, the president’s residence, “usually around March or April every year”. [...]
In New Delhi, Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak congratulated Ramli on the Indian award, saying it was well-deserved.

Ramli Ibrahim has dedicated himself for 30 years to ballet, modern and classical Indian dances, especially Bharatnatium and Odissi dances, after getting his engineering degree in Australia.

But I also worry for him, for someone who loves the makyong and wayang kulit and Indian classical dances, as well as animals, but who lives in Malaysia. I hope the PM will protect him from the "usual mob".
Odissi is definitely rooted in Hinduism.
ReplyDeleteIt is not a secular dance like ballet. Traditionally it was performed as an offering to Hindu Gods during holy occasions, though in modern times it is often performed in purely secular situations such as halls and theatres.
Many Muslims have questioned whether Ramli Ibrahim is Murtad. His renown and immense stature has protected him somewhat, but I heard he was once hauled up by one of the JA* bodies for questioning.
