Iran Conducts First Limpet Mine Attack On Tanker Since 2019

Iran Conducts First Limpet Mine Attack On Tanker Since 2019

The prior 24 hours - stretching from Friday back into Thursday - had seen Iran announced no less than four recent attacks on international shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, mostly through alleged sea mines.

The fourth claimed attack is the one raising eyebrows and getting most attention, given a tanker was reporteldy disabled by limpet naval mines. This method has not been used by the Iranians in the seven-month long war until now.

If accurate, it would be hugely signficant - given a new tactic in Iran's arsenal since the start of Operation Epic Fury - as the last reported limpet mine attack in regional waters was in 2019.

"A UAE-owned crude oil tanker was damaged by limpet naval mines late on Thursday night, a UK-based maritime monitoring agency reported, suggesting a potential shift in tactics by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as it struggles to inhibit shipping in the Strait of Hormuz," regional news source Al-Monitor writes.

"The M/T Louise-1 was disabled while transiting the Strait of Hormuz after two limpet mines that had been attached to its hull above the waterline by attackers aboard a small boat detonated, causing a fire in its engine room after 10 p.m. local time, the UK Maritime Trade Organization (UKMTO) monitoring agency said. The Louise’s crew was unharmed, the agency reported," it adds.

So far the main attack methods have included drones and sea mines. But this limpet mine attack would have involved a small fastboat going right up to the hull of the tanker.

These are typically relatively small magnetic explosives that must be affixed to a ship by hand. The incident further suggests that even if all of Iran's coastal weapons sites are taken out by US strikes, the Iranians can strike so long as IRGC fastboats remain active.

TAC the past many months: Unless we expect to destroy every Iranian speedboat they'll retain the ability to attack ships in the Hormuz. Military power can't solve this, we need a deal. Iran hawks: We won the battle of Hormuz!! Today's news:

Meanwhile, there are ongoing signs of a Trump-ordered US military build-up in the Middle East. The White House has been signaling potential renewed major combat against Iran after the midterm elections, which are just days away. Could we witness bombs away again by the close of next week?

Israel's Channel 14’s English-language account on X on Friday reported that over the prior 48 hours an "unprecedented US military airlift has swept across the Middle East."

At least ten heavy transport aircraft arrived in Israel “alongside roughly 80 aerial refueling tankers.” Additionally some military assets are said to be withdrawn from Gulf 'frontline' areas in anticipation of likely Iranian retaliation in the event of a US attack on the Islamic Republic.

Rafizi: Bersama supporters will 'slaughter' me if party joins coalition

MALACCA POLLS | Bersama co-leader Rafizi Ramli has joked that his party’s supporters would “slaughter” him if it joined a political coalition, arguing that voters are growing tired of alliances driven by the pursuit of power.

“I think if Bersama suddenly decides to join or hold discussions with a coalition, these people (supporters) will slaughter me.

“So the political situation in Malaysia right now is chaotic because of coalitions, and these coalitions are formed on supposedly pragmatic grounds to gain power,” he told reporters while accompanying Bersama’s Bukit Katil candidate Aliza Che Amran today.

Bersama is contesting 16 seats independently in the Nov 14 Malacca state election, despite failing to win any seats in its electoral debut in Johor in July.

All 15 of its Johor election candidates lost their deposits after failing to secure at least 12.5 percent of the votes cast in their respective constituencies.

The party subsequently sat out the Aug 1 Negeri Sembilan election, citing time and resource constraints, and the intense contest between Pakatan Harapan and BN, to focus its efforts on Malacca.

Taking people’s support for granted

Rafizi said the growing number of political coalitions had confused voters, while parties appeared to take public loyalty for granted.

“What the public sees is this political chaos, which actually confuses everyone.

“Bersama is taking a risk because conventional wisdom says everyone must be part of a coalition.

“But I feel political parties are also overly confident that the people will somehow stay with them forever,” said the former PKR deputy president.

He argued that voters would eventually reject such political arrangements in favour of parties willing to stand on their own principles.

“When the time comes, the people will get fed up and start looking for an antithesis to what is happening.

“The antithesis to this ongoing political confusion is a principled party that is brave enough to go in alone and stick to its own principles,” he said.

The Malacca state assembly was dissolved on Sept 23, with polling set for Nov 14 and early voting on Nov 10.

In the 2021 state election, BN won 21 of the 28 seats, while Harapan secured five and Perikatan Nasional two.

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 31 — A chicken slaughtering and processing warehouse in Puchong, raided under Ops Taring Chiller yesterday, is believed to have operated for 20 years.

Bukit Aman Internal Security and Public Order Department Wildlife Crime Bureau/Special Intelligence and Investigation (WCB/PSK) commander Datuk Mohd Zaki Ashar said investigations identified the warehouse owner as a 34-year-old local man.

“Check results showed this fresh chicken slaughtering and processing warehouse has operated for roughly 20 years.

“Investigations also revealed that the warehouse owner is a 34-year-old local man, and further investigations into the matter will be continued by the Halal Enforcement Division of the Selangor Islamic Religious Department (Jais),” he said when contacted by Bernama today.

He added that during the warehouse’s operation, Jais and relevant enforcement agencies conducted three to four raids and inspections. Yesterday’s raid was the first involving the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) via WCB/PSK.

Mohd Zaki, in a statement yesterday, confirmed that authorities seized over 6.5 tonnes of chicken suspected to have been processed without adhering to Syariah-compliant slaughtering methods and halal certification requirements during the raid on the warehouse in Puchong.

Also detained in Ops Taring Chiller were 12 Bangladeshi and Pakistani men believed to be involved in slaughtering and processing activities at the premises.

The live chicken supply is believed to have been sourced from several poultry farms around Sepang. The processed chicken was distributed to customers including eateries, grocery stores, and supermarkets across the Klang Valley.

The case is being investigated under Section 3(1)(A) and Section 4(1) of the Trade Descriptions (Definition of Halal) Order 2011, as well as Section 38(1) of the Environmental Quality Act 1974. — Bernama

The European Union and Canada have launched what they described as an Alliance for the Future, as Ottawa prepares to become the bloc’s first so-called “associate member”.

Prime Minister Mark Carney hosted the Canada-EU summit in Montreal and signed a digital trade deal, alongside other agreements. Also at the Friday summit were European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President Antonio Costa.

The term “associate member” has no legal basis and is contested by some EU states. However, its use underscores the desire of Canada and the EU to forge closer relations, as United States President Donald Trump continues to threaten Washington’s traditional allies with trade tariffs if they do not play by his rules.

“Canada and the EU are working to establish the closest possible partnership, which will be far from full membership, but which will make Canada the first associate member of the European Union,” Carney posted on X.

“Today in Montreal, we have taken a major step forward by establishing more than twenty measures that will increase affordability, create opportunities and ensure our sovereignty on both sides of the Atlantic.”

In a joint statement following the summit, the two sides announced an agreement under which the European Investment Bank will invest in critical Canadian resources, particularly raw minerals. They also said they would advance cooperation on artificial intelligence security and safety.

“A more dangerous and divided world has fundamentally changed the requirements of sovereignty. It is no longer enough for nations to feed, fuel and defend ourselves,” the statement said.

It added that “true sovereignty” requires secure access to critical minerals, semiconductors, payment systems, energy, vaccines, space-based communications and AI.

Ukraine was also on the meeting agenda, with Carney announcing Canada’s participation in the EU’s 90 billion euro ($103bn) support loan for Kyiv. Carney said Canada would make an initial contribution of 500 million euros ($558m).

Opportunities for students in Canada and the EU were also discussed. Both sides said they would launch negotiations aimed at deepening Ottawa’s participation in Erasmus+, the EU’s flagship student exchange programme.

Carney and Trump are currently engaged in a trade dispute, with talks under way to reach a deal between the two countries.
