Learn from Pak Lah, keep quiet as you have retired, Tiong tells Dr M
The tourism, arts and culture minister says Dr Mahathir Mohamad should stop confusing the people with his 3R remarks.
Tiong King Sing said Dr Mahathir Mohamad should stay silent like Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, ‘who is praying for our country’.
PETALING JAYA: Progressive Democratic Party (PDP) president Tiong King Sing has urged Dr Mahathir Mohamad to emulate former prime minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi by bowing out of politics after his retirement.
Tiong, who is also the tourism, arts and culture minister, said Mahathir should stop confusing the people with his remarks on race, religion and royalty (3R) issues.
“I would like to ask Mahathir to learn from Abdullah, who has chosen to keep quiet after stepping down. Until today, he has not made any noise.
“Instead, he is praying for our country. Why can’t Mahathir stay quiet?” Tiong said at a unity dinner with the Chinese community in Johor Bahru last night, Bernama reported.
Also present were agriculture and food security minister and Amanah president Mohamad Sabu as well as Pakatan Harapan’s candidate for the Pulai parliamentary by-election Suhaizan Kaiat.
At a Perikatan Nasional ceramah on Sunday, Mahathir, who is being investigated for sedition, vowed to continue speaking up on issues related to 3R despite action being taken against him.
The former prime minister said he has already been questioned by police nine times, Berita Harian reported.
Tiong said that in the same vein, PN chairman Muhyiddin Yassin should not resort to religious rhetoric which can create misunderstandings among Malaysians of various races and religions.
“Now, we (also) see and hear all sorts of stories from PAS. PAS seems to be suggesting that there is only one race and one religion in Malaysia.
“Maybe Muhyiddin has forgotten that Malaysia is a multi-racial and multi-religious country and there must be mutual respect. Do not instigate people just because you want their votes,” he said.
The Bintulu MP also urged the people to give Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim the time and space to rejuvenate the economy.
Last Saturday, Muhyiddin allegedly said at a ceramah at Dataran Utama Kempas in Johor Bahru that it was “haram” to vote for Suhaizan in the by-election.
