PETALING JAYA: Terengganu menteri besar Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar should apologise to the people for going abroad when the state is dealing with floods during the monsoon season, an analyst said.

Universiti Sains Malaysia’s Ahmad Fauzi Abdul Hamid also said the menteri besar, who has drawn flak for being “absent” amid the floods, should announce more cash aid for victims.

“The menteri besar should not have planned for any holiday in December in the first place as the monsoon season had been expected,” Fauzi told FMT.

“And when the (flood) situation got even more serious, people were hoping that he would cut his trip short and return (to Terengganu).”

He said there had yet to be any apology from Samsuri’s side while his executive councillors and state agencies were scrambling to mitigate the worsening floods.

Fauzi said an apology would not harm Samsuri’s political credibility but would instead portray his humility, adding this was a key quality valued by people.

However, Fauzi believed that PAS supporters would not punish him at the state polls next year over this mistake as they were known for their loyalty to the Islamic party.

Azmi Hassan of Akademi Nusantara agreed with Fauzi that the handling of the floods would not have much effect on PAS’ chances at the state elections.

“PAS voters will still vote for the party,” he said.

Yesterday, state executive councillor Hanafiah Mat confirmed that Samsuri was in New Zealand and was scheduled to return today.

The massive floods that hit the east coast have claimed five lives as of yesterday, with a three-year-old child in Terengganu being the first casualty.

Terengganu has recorded the largest number of evacuees with 34,383 being given shelter in 245 relief centres.
