GPS agrees to join Anwar-led unity govt

GPS will be joining the unity government that will be led by newly minted Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, as per the Yang di-Pertuan Agong’s decree.

Its chief Abang Johari Openg said the Sarawak-based ruling coalition abides by the Agong’s decree, saying His Majesty wants a strong and stable government.

“The Agong advised us to form a unity government to overcome the political impasse.

“We obey the constitutional monarchy and the Rukun Negara clearly states that we must obey the king, even though we don’t have a king in Sarawak,” he told a press conference today.

In the just concluded 15th general election, GPS managed to secure 23 seats.

DAP’s apologies accepted

The Sarawak premier said he accepts with an open heart DAP’s apologies, which were earlier conveyed by DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke and chairperson Lim Guan Eng.

“What’s important is that they have apologised, it means they acknowledged their mistakes.

“What they mentioned was to open a new chapter. But at the same time, they must respect our component party SUPP.

“(With the apologies) it means we were right all this time. All along we were right and our politics is clean politics. Their politics is not ‘clean’,” Abang Johari (above) added.

Asked if GPS would be collaborating with DAP, Abang Johari said he would leave it to Anwar as it is not his prerogative.

“We will see, you must remember, we are the biggest bloc with 23 MPs.

“You compare with other parties, we are a very big bloc,” he said when asked if GPS requested a deputy prime minister position in the new unity government.
