Justice must be served, says PM over guard’s death

PETALING JAYA: Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob says justice must be served over the death of a security guard who was attacked at a condominium in Ipoh, Perak last December.
The prime minister was responding to Ipoh Barat MP M Kula Segaran who thanked Ismail for taking the time to speak to security guard Thava Sagayam’s family recently.
“I’m saddened and appalled by this incident. Nobody is above the law. Justice must and will take its course,” Ismail said in a Twitter post.
The prime minister also thanked Kula, the DAP national vice-chairman, for his concern for the family amid this difficult time.

Two days ago, Kula said the prime minister spoke to Thava’s nephew on the phone and “expressed the feelings of many Malaysians”. The prime minister had also tried to speak to Thava’s widow, E Philomena, but could not reach her.
Previously, Kula said DAP would provide legal aid to the family after Philomena approached the party to assist in court matters and see that justice is dispensed. Thava breathed his last a week ago.
The suspect had been dissatisfied with the security guard for stopping the suspect’s son from using the swimming pool, which was closed to the public at that time.
He went on to assault Thava in front of his son by using a table, until the security guard lost consciousness.
Police have reclassified the case as a murder following his death, with the suspect potentially facing the death sentence if found guilty.
Perak police chief Mior Faridalathrash said last Saturday the suspect had been charged at the Ipoh magistrate’s court on Jan 6 with causing grievous hurt. Case mention has been set for Sept 9.
