PN’s status under question amid claims of deregistration

This follows a viral notice by the RoS, which a Bersatu source claims is true
Bersatu and PAS fell out not long after the Islamic party took over the chairmanship of Perikatan Nasional in February.
PETALING JAYA: Question marks have arisen over Perikatan Nasional’s status as a political coalition amid claims the Registrar of Societies has deregistered the entity.
Sinar Harian reported that a purported RoS notice dated Sept 22 had gone viral, allegedly giving PN chairman Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar 30 days to submit representations to the registrar.
It is claimed an order has been issued to suspend all activities under the name of PN, citing Section 13(2) of the Societies Act.
A Bersatu source claimed the notice was authentic and that PN secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan and other coalition components had also been notified of the matter.
The source told FMT that Bersatu would issue a statement soon.
Separately, Bersatu secretary-general Azmin Ali said the party received a copy of the RoS letter to PN this afternoon.
FMT has reached out to leaders of other PN components for comment.
PAS’s Sura assemblyman Dr Tengku Fakhruddin Tengku Fauzi appeared unfazed by the rumours, saying in a Facebook post: “We have PAS. PAS for all.”
Bersatu and PAS fell out not long after the latter took over the chairmanship of PN in February through Samsuri, the Islamic party’s vice-president.
In June, PAS decided to end its political cooperation with Bersatu, while opposition leader Hamzah Zainudin’s Wawasan and Mukhriz Mahathir’s Pejuang were later admitted as PN components.
PN formed an alliance with Barisan Nasional in the Negeri Sembilan state election, which Bersatu claimed was done unilaterally. Bersatu went solo at the polls and suffered heavy defeats in all 24 seats contested.
PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang claimed Bersatu had automatically ceased to be a PN component after announcing plans to form a new coalition, although Bersatu disputed this.
