AfD Wins Landslide In Saxony-Anhalt. Russia Cancels Invasion Of Leipzig.
The elections in the German state of Saxony-Anhalt concluded last night. The results have come in and the Alternative fur Deutschland (Alternative for Germany) party has won by a landslide with over 44% of the vote. This is 2.6 times more than the 17% votes won by the next party the CDU of Reichskanzellor Friedrich Merz.
Before that - the Russian invasion of Leipzig. Here is a map of Saxony.
That red circle is the city of Leipzig which is in Saxony. About three days back, the 'authorities' suddenly discovered a drone (armed with explosives, not armed with explosives, battery powered, gasoline powered etc) sitting quietly by itself on the tarmac at the Leipzig airport. It caused a huge panic. It was an armed drone, it was not, high explosives, low explosives, how did it get there? Where did it come from? Just sitting there on the airport tarmac. Some said it was found beside a Ukrainian transport aircraft (do they have any left)? Soon 2 + 2 became 5. The drone was from Russia. Despite Russia being 1,600 km away to the right of that map. (My guess is the drone came out of that Ukrainian transport plane - if there was one). This was two days before the elections in Saxony.
The AfD party made no bones about the fact that they are in favour of Germany establishing good relations with Russia again. The AfD is the pro-Russia party. Hence that mysterious drone. Too late the AfD still won by a landslide - a huge chunk of the German people are with them.
Saxony-Anhalt election — 6 September 2026
Yesterday's election produced a historic political earthquake in Saxony-Anhalt. The AfD (Alternative für Deutschland) won the state election for the first time, taking roughly 44.4% of the vote—more than double its 2021 result. This is the first time a far-right party has won a German state election in the post-war era.
The CDU, which had governed Saxony-Anhalt since 2002, suffered a spectacular collapse. It fell from 37.1% in 2021 to about 17.2–17.5%, losing roughly 20 percentage points.
The preliminary picture was approximately:

Turnout reached about 76.9%, a very high level for the state.
Despite its huge victory, the AfD fell short of an outright majority. The emerging projection gives it about 39 of the 83 seats, while 42 are required for a majority.
This creates the central question: can the AfD actually govern? The other established parties have so far rejected cooperation with it. The BSW, however, has raised the possibility that excluding a party with 44% of the vote from government could itself be undemocratic.
Politically, the result is therefore much bigger than one eastern German state: it is a major setback for Reichskanzellor Friedrich Merz's CDU and a dramatic demonstration of the AfD's growing strength nationally.
The AfD may or may not govern in Saxony-Anhalt. They might do a Geert Wilders on Saxony. Geert Wilder's party won the most number of seats in the Dutch Parliament but insufficient to form a simple majority by himself. So all the other parties ganged up and refused to form any coalition with Geert Wilders. This may happen in Saxony.
But the writing is on the wall. The CDU is history. This is a good thing for Germany.
