Negeri Sembilan ruler strips Rais Yatim of state honours

The former menteri besar and current Wawasan chairman loses the Seri Utama and Dato' Setia Negeri Sembilan awards conferred in 2001 and 1979

Former Umno stalwart Rais Yatim had served as Negeri Sembilan menteri besar from 1978 to 1982.

PETALING JAYA: The Yang di-Pertuan Besar of Negeri Sembilan, Tuanku Muhriz Tuanku Munawir, has revoked the state honours bestowed on former menteri besar Rais Yatim.

State secretary Zafir Ibrahim said the former Umno stalwart and current Wawasan chairman lost the Seri Utama and Dato’ Setia Negeri Sembilan awards conferred in 2001 and 1979.

“This decision was made to preserve the honour of the Negeri Sembilan royal institution,” he said in a statement.

Rais, a former Senate president, played a central role in the ongoing Negeri Sembilan royal dispute, publicly backing the move by three undangs and one former undang to remove Tuanku Muhriz as the state’s ruler.

The former six-term Jelebu MP was among those present when Tunku Nadzaruddin Tuanku Jaafar was allegedly proclaimed the new Yang di-Pertuan Besar at a five-star hotel in Melaka last month.

The Negeri Sembilan palace declared the proclamation invalid in terms of the state’s constitution, laws and customs.

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim also said that Tuanku Muhriz remained the recognised Yang di-Pertuan Besar of Negeri Sembilan.

The crisis is currently the subject of legal proceedings in court.
