Embattled PKR leader Rafizi Ramli will likely face Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz for the Pandan parliamentary seat in the next general election, going by how the latter has been “intensively working the ground” in the constituency.

This was speculated by Rafizi himself, who described Zafrul, a former senator and cabinet minister, as “now best friends” with Prime Minister and PKR president Anwar Ibrahim.

In the latest episode of his podcast, Yang Berhenti Menteri, which aired last night, the Pandan MP and former PKR deputy president reiterated his desire to continue representing the constituency in the next general election.

"(Zafrul) is now intensively in Pandan. Every day he is Pandan. So, it is clear that he has been promised to contest the Pandan seat.

“Within PKR, it is said that he has been instructed to contest in Pandan. So, we will likely see more intensive reports such as this,” Rafizi said, referring to Zafrul’s many social media posts in which the latter was seen visiting and listening to the problems of people in Pandan.

"All the best to him. Pandan voters will surely be happy. Please ask for lots of money.”

Zafrul has posted several times on his social media accounts about his activities in Pandan, where he met communities from a variety of ethnic backgrounds and ages.

For example, during one particular day, he was seen spending the morning volunteers of a vegetarian soup kitchen in Teratai. Later that night, he joined national badminton legend Lee Chong Wei and fans at a Thomas Cup watch-party at Ampang Jaya Municipal Council Hall.

One post that piqued the curiosity of netizens was his visit to the Al-Azim Mosque in Pandan last week, where he spoke about how the congregation complained about the heat inside the structure, which is only cooled by fans.

He wrote that officials told him that the mosque needed air conditioners.

“God willing, I will try to help in this matter,” Zafrul wrote in the post, which attracted praise and suggestions that he contest in Pandan.

‘No shame’

A former Selangor Umno treasurer, Zafrul made his political debut when he was appointed finance minister during the Muhyiddin Yassin and Ismail Sabri Yaakob administrations between 2020 and 2022.

He then contested but lost under the BN ticket against Pakatan Harapan’s Dzulkefly Ahmad for the Kuala Selangor seat in the 15th general election.

Despite this loss, he was appointed a senator and made international trade and investment minister under the Madani administration, before relinquishing the reins when his term as senator expired last year.

After joining PKR, Zafrul was appointed senior economic adviser to Anwar.

Rafizi, on the other hand, resigned as economy minister after failing to defend his deputy president’s post in the 2025 PKR party election.

In his podcast, Rafizi also described Zafrul as someone who “has no sense of shame”.

“Zafrul is not the type to feel shame. If he were, he wouldn’t have jumped from Muhyiddin’s Perikatan Nasional government to Umno.

“In Umno, he was elevated to become Selangor treasurer and fielded as a candidate (in the Kuala Selangor parliamentary seat in GE15). Anwar had even criticised him before the election.

“But suddenly, he joins PKR and becomes best friends with the PM,” Rafizi said.
