Twelve out of 14 Umno assemblypersons in Negeri Sembilan have reportedly welcomed the party leadership's decision for them to remain as part of the coalition government in the state.

According to a source, the 12 lawmakers rejected the idea of joining the opposition bloc during a meeting with Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi on April 30.

This was the day after Umno u-turned on its position in Negeri Sembilan and said it would continue to support the coalition state government while respecting the position of the BN assemblypersons.

The source, who was part of the April 30 meeting, stated that the stand taken by the 12 assemblypersons clearly contradicted recent statements made by Negeri Sembilan Umno chief, Jalaluddin Alias.

"During the meeting, the 12 assemblypersons expressed readiness to continue with the coalition government in Negeri Sembilan.

"In fact, they also want Umno assemblypersons to be reappointed as state executive councillors to serve as a check-and-balance mechanism in the state," the source told Malaysiakini.

The source added that being in the opposition is not a viable option for them as it would hinder Umno’s ability to serve the people effectively.

During the meeting, the source said Zahid reminded the assemblypersons not to take matters into their own hands by having private negotiations for positions in the state government.

According to the source, the meeting held in Kuala Lumpur was also attended by Umno secretary-general Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki.

Jalaluddin, who is the Pertang assemblyperson, was absent. Another assemblyperson not present was Umno deputy president Mohamad Hasan, who is the Rantau assemblyperson.

‘Wait and see’

Yesterday, Jalaluddin said that Negeri Sembilan Umno is taking a "wait and see" approach regarding any decision made by the top party leadership and Pakatan Harapan as partners in the government concerning the menteri besar position.

Speaking to reporters during Umno’s 80th-anniversary celebration, he also insisted that all 14 Umno assemblypersons have withdrawn their support from Negeri Sembilan Menteri Besar Aminuddin Harun.

"I have clearly stated the stand of the 14 Negeri Sembilan assemblypersons - that we have lost confidence in the leadership of the menteri besar.

"We are not budging from this stance. This is not about political interests, power, or 'tebuk atap' (backdoor manoeuvres).

"This is about an administration that manages the institutions of customary laws and Negeri Sembilan royalty," he stressed, adding that the state Umno chapter is prepared to sit on the opposition bench until the next polls.

Exco posts

Meanwhile, the source claimed that three out of the 12 assemblypersons suggested to Zahid that Umno lawmakers be appointed to the recently vacated exco positions.

"Names of certain assemblypersons were proposed to the president during the meeting to be considered for the vacant exco roles," the source said.

Previously, Umno held four exco positions in Negeri Sembilan before they resigned after declaring no confidence in Aminuddin’s leadership, while one lawmaker served as a deputy speaker of the state legislative assembly.

They then attempted to form a new state government together with Perikatan Nasional.

However, they were effectively blocked after Aminuddin received royal consent to lead a minority government in the state - and eventually gave up on their plan.
