This was despite the HR telling her to do so

What was supposed to be a simple family vacation ended with frustration for one employee after she was unexpectedly issued a warning letter by her company for taking unpaid leave — even though it was initially approved.

Took 3 annual leaves & 3 unpaid leaves

Taking to social media, she shared that she had applied for six days of annual leave (AL) several months ago to travel with her family.

However, the company only approved for three days, telling her she could take the remaining three days as unpaid leave instead.

They told me, ‘If it’s three AL + three unpaid leave, it can be done.’ I agreed since my flight tickets and hotel bookings were already arranged. No point wasting the money,” she explained.

But when she returned from her trip, she was shocked to receive a warning letter from HR.

She went to ask HR because she didn’t understand why she had received the warning letter. The response she got left her completely speechless.

HR told her that because she took three days of unpaid leave, the company had to issue a warning letter.

“I was stunned because it was the company itself that suggested the unpaid leave in the first place,” she wrote.

Reactions

The incident has since sparked debate online, with many questioning whether the company’s HR policies were fair or properly communicated to employees.

‘Isn’t AL a benefit given by the company? I really don’t understand — what’s with the 3 AL + 3 unpaid leave? I have so many AL, why do I need to take unpaid leave? This makes no sense.’

‘After seeing your case, I also learned something — always use email for any leave application so that there’s written proof. That way, if we report to the Labour Department, there’s evidence. Didn’t know the company had this kind of capability.’
